first post so apologies if any of this is a rehash but well this series has got me hooked and i felt i had too throw in my two cents.
Oks first up, there's a thread in here somewhere with a reference to the comic book with the polar bear in the comic in question the heroes get attacked by an alien who is actually not evil but merely appears so because of it's current circumstances.
Which makes me wonder if our "monster" isn't really just misunderstood, ala the alien in said comic. It has killed the pilot and the people the french lady knew but perhaps it's not actually evil as we know it.
Second point:- Backgammon, well that whole scene with locke and walt got me thinking, so i did some research on backgammon specifically the type that was played in ancient mesopatamia. Here is a description of the oldest playing inscructions i could find.

"The tablet shows the number and the names of the pawns, one of the dice (two knucklebones: one of sheep, one of ox), and a few details concerning the throws. It appears clearly that each of the five pawns owned by the players were different from one another and that a special throw was required to place each pawn at the beginning of the game. Among the twenty squares on the game board, five are generally decorated with a rosette and it seems that those squares are important in the course of the game. The tablet shows that those squares brought good luck, to place a pawn on them gave an advantage. If a pawn did not stop on a rosette, a penalty had to be paid. The scribe has described the fate of each pawn in a poetical way, the wins and the losses corresponding to the same efforts required to win enough food, drink and love." [1]
I don't know maybe it's just me but the above paragraph feels almost like the show's writers could have written it you know. There are just too many ways this could apply to the show
the way all the pawns are different and each player gets a certain number of pawns, in the above quote 5 is the accepted number of pawns but if you have a look around the web many ancient backgammon games prefferred to have 7 pawns per side. In fact we don't know how to play the game with only five pawns as the rules are incomplete, and the following link shows how to play with 7 instead. Notice that we have 14 major characters?
www.gamecabinet.com/history/Ur.html (http://www.gamecabinet.com/history/Ur.html) theres the link to the site if anyone wants it.

Lets also not forget how the end line in the above quote mentions winning food, drink and love? Perhaps a sign of things to come in the show? I think that the rosette line could also hold some significance, perhaps a situation or test that each character will have to endure, which will affect the game more than normal? Anyways just some food for thought.

point 3:- French polynesia, i think it's pretty safe to say that they are somewhere around there. It makes sense to my knowledge of geography and would also explain the transmission so here's some info on french polynesia

General background concerning French Polynesia:
group of archipelagos totalling 130 islands;
200,000 inhabitants, of whom 50% live on the largest island, Tahiti;
nuclear weapons testing programme located on the atolls of Moruroa and Fangataufa, some 1200 km south-east of Tahiti;
the nearest inhabited atoll, Tureia (60 persons), 100 km from Moruroa. In all some 12,000 persons live within 1000 km of the test sites;
between July 1966 and July 1991, 175 nuclear tests were performed (Footnote 8) :
41 atmospheric tests between 1966 and 1974;
134 underground tests between 1975 and 1991;
3 accidents occurred during the period of atmospheric testing, causing measurable environmental contamination (Footnote 9);
April 1992 : moratorium on the nuclear tests;
June 1995 : announcement by the French government of a resumption of nuclear tests.

i saw a thread before with some really good information regarding french nuclear testing in the area but i can't seem to find it with the search page, instead i'll point you to the following link, lots of info and about a third of the way down the page you'll notice one of frances biggest ever nuclear tests happened in 1988. about 16 years ago from today.....

www.ratical.org/ratville/....12.95.txt (http://www.ratical.org/ratville/nukes/Mururoa08.12.95.txt)

while i actually prefer the "phildalephia experiment" theory to say french nuclear testing gone wrong, there are a few coincidences here that should be looked at.
I also realise this is all very reality based but i am seriously hoping the shows producers have used real history to splice up parts of the story (ala the da vinci code).

ps:- anyone notice in episode two when they get attacked by the polar bear that sawyer and sayid are having a verbal argument. it may just be coincidence or maybe the bear heard the voices but perhaps it may be something to do with the island as well. maybe we should watch for signs of "monsters" whenver there is a confrontation, specifically in the jungle.
pps:- edited to throw in above ps
