did anyone catch Locke saying this to Jack after Locke saved him from the fall? I thought this was an interesting statement that probably gives us a clue as to where all of this bizarre stuff is heading.

My husband told me that Howard Stern came up with the theory that they are all really dead. They are in purgatory and one by one they will all pass over. Yikes! That would explain a lot. Like why Locke can suddenly walk. Anyone have any comments. I don't think I believe this to be true. Personally I am hoping that it's not.

I've heard the same thing from a number of different fans. I DOES make some sense - as they fully come to terms with their true self they are able to pass over into the after life.
But then the following question arises...
Why did the pilot die so violently?

Don't get me wrong, please. I liked Locke's speech. It seemed to be just what Jack needed, at that particular moment.
I'm just playing Devil's advocate and asking: what if *not* everything in the island happens for a reason?
Or at least, not for any other reason than the fact that certain actions, decisions, circumstances are followed by certain reactions, consequences, etc.?
The producers have told the fans that the survivors are not dead. That time and space do not bend. That the show is based on science. So maybe a lot of these intriguing details are red herrings and foreshadowing designed to keep the audience guessing.
Then again, I'm a cynic :D

The most interesting thing about Lost is how each character views their situation. Locke sees it all as a miracle (his paralysis was probably psychosomatic to begin with). To him it's a dream come true. That's why he's so calm and at peace with this (and why so many board members seem to think he's A. crazy or B. part of some vast conspiracy). He was simply given everything he wanted. I like his point of view. If Lost has a head it's Jack ... if it has a heart it's Locke. Finding the magic in the worst of circumstances is not easy.
As for being dead. I thought about that... but The Sixth Sense made that a total cliche. Plus imagine the let down in the final episode.

Very cool observation!!!! I'm on board with that.
Now...........what was up with the doll in the water? Did it symbolize the drowning woman from earlier in the episode? And where the heck is Jack's dad's body? My husband speculates that maybe Jack didn't get the body on the plane, but just the casket, since he had such a hard time with it at the airport. Talk about everything happening for a reason.:eek
I dont believe they are all dead. I dont believe the purgatory theory. But i do think something is taking place that is forcing them to deal with their lives in a way that is not natural to us. I guess that's my safe answer.

Hmm. Doesn't everyone have something they probably "should" deal with that our civilized society enables them to avoid facing?
I'm not big on this "purgatory" thing either. And I'm not sure if everything happens for a reason so much as we find a reason that it could have happened. The narrative is part of what makes us human.

railwaymadness sayeth words of wisdom:
"I'm not sure if everything happens for a reason so much as we find a reason that it could have happened."
So we transform coincidence into a common thread, or a connection between the passengers, and struggle to find one unique explanation to fit a series of events that, quite likely, are completely unrelated.
Of course, the writers encourage us to ponder, wonder, theorize and speculate. And it's fun :D

The "dead who think they're alive" is really played out right now. I won't name the movies in case people haven't seen them. Plus I think the show already debunked that one.
