When Nikki suggests that there are other hatches, why didn't Desmond know about them? He seemed clueless...and yet he knew the computer was for communication. Granted, he wasn't technically part of Dharma since he crash-landed on the island, but didn't he witness Kelvin drawing that blast door map over a period of years? You mean to tell me he had zero inkling about the idea of other hatches??

Kelvin WAS painting with invisible paint, there is a very good chance that Desmond never saw the finished project.

Remember the scene in Orientation? Jack asked Desmond, "How is it that you didn't know about the crash? About us?" "I push this button every 108 minutes. I don't get out much.", was Desmond's reply. You can't do a lot of island charting, if every 108 minutes, you have to input the numbers and push the button.

Desmond did know about the other hatches. At the beginning of the episode he was the one who suggested they go to the Pearl and see if they could use it to communicate.
Nikki only told them that the screens may be able to show them footage from other hatches beside the Swan, because when Locke originally heard the orientation tape in the Pearl he assumed they were talking about the Swan station primarily (and, the only screen he saw footage on was the one showing Jack in the Swan).
So, Nikki just said that the orientation video had implied multiple hatches - and then Sayid said he'd try to fix the feed.
Silly, yes, but Desmond was aware of the hatches.

We don't know for sure that Desmond never saw the blast door map. But, I'd guess that he saw it at least once, and Kelvin must've discussed what he was doing. IE:making the hatch map. They were together for like 3 years, weren't they?
True but when did he see it if he saw it hed know where the other stations werre!

Also remember that those in the 'Swan' were not supposed to know about the 'Pearl' as it was a "Psychological Experiment"

You mean, the Pearl was where the experiment was, right?
Also, it is difficult to believe that during all that time by himself Desmond didn't fake a Lockdown to check out the map.

I meant that according to the video, the Pearl was observing the Swan as an experiment. It seems as though it may be been reversed, but nevertheless. The People in the Pearl knew about those in the Swan, but not vice versa.

this may be getting off topic but i think its ok to ask in here and i didnt want to start a whole new thread..
in the beginning of the episode when they are talking about the computers being used for communication Locke Sayid and Des are sitting on the beach...
Locke: I think I know how to find Jack, Kate, and Sawyer.
Sayid: May I ask why he is being included in this conversation?
Desmond: Is that supposed to hurt my feelings brutha?
why doesn't Sayid want Des in the convo? does Sayid hate Des?

I think it's kinda the same thing that hurley said: jack would take kate and go...indicating that things have changed and now it's a free for all...

Sayid is a very distrusful towards others. He may think that Desmond worked for Dharma, the others, the CIA (or choose something else) all the time and that he is only there to spy at them.

I agree...I thought it was strange at first that Sayid didn't want to let Des in on the conversation. But then I thought about it...it has only been a few days since Des returned to the island (which was the first time Sayid and Des met). I think Sayid was being cautious.
What was strange about the pearl scene to me was this:
How do they know where the eye-patch guy is??? They just turned on a TV and there he was...but we don't know which station he is at, right? Maybe I'm wrong about this or it wasn't clear, but it's not like there were signs by each monitor saying which station is which, right? When Locke says "I guess he'll be expecting us" I thought, how are you going to get there if you have no idea where to go???
Also, they never actually did any communicating with the Pearl computer...which is why they were there in the first place!
I was really confused about that whole scene but hopefully next week will clear things up a bit.
