First I would like to say that Lost is the most brilliant idea for a series since Twin Peaks. It will continue to do well as long as the writing stays consistent. My feeling on the island is that it would not be that hard for an island to remain isolated in the Southern Pacific (Below 40 degrees) as it would be wll out of the historical routes of discovery as well as the traditional trade routes. Being that mankind has only started long distance travel over water in the last 1000 years (Polyensians, Chinese, Vikings, Europeans, Arabs, etc.) and mostly for the need for resources and means to trade, it would not be far fetched for an island, even one a decent size to remain undiscovered as well as unseen by satallite as Satallite needs a place to look and why would it need to look in the middle of nowhere. In regards to the so-called monster, I think that perhaps you have a species of Mammoth and Saber Tooth Tigers, etc which have had a chance to evolve in isolation of thousands of years. One only has to look at New Zealand and how it had it's bird species evolve in isolation over the last 10,000 years to create the Giant Moa, which only went extinct about 500 years ago from the maori's over hunting them. Perhaps this island was part of ancient Gondowaland (Ancient Super Continent) and had drifted via Plate Tectonics to the Deep South Pacific and for some reason during the Ice Ages, maintaned it's animal life. Perhaps an ancient warm current, similar to the western atlantic gulf stream kept the enviornment relativley mild during those ice advances and ancient common breeds of animals (Saber Tooth Tiger, Mammoth, etc. ) had chances to evolve. Just a thought.......I think the show will keep within reason as far as science is concerned. You never know with them Frenchies on the island ????

Welcome, Aries!

I like your post! Some of the things you suggest have been discussed elsewhere, keep reading and you'll find the threads (and links to maps, etc). Hope you enjoy them.

Yes, I saw the Saber Tooth Tiger & mammoth posts after I posted. I think the thing to consider here is what types of mammals are unique to the Southern Pacific....Kangaroos (Aussie), Oraungatang (N Guinea) (Bad Spelling - I mean big red monkey) as well as the lamas (S America) and such are all unique mammals to the areas. Don't forget the Tasmanian Devil (Big Nasty Dog who like to munch on criminals, ie Aussies). All these mammals have had mankind to contend with for survival (Aus - Aborigines, N Guniea - varoius asian tribes, South America - Indians). Just think of the possibilities of mammal evolution without mankind as in the case of New Zealand (Settled 1000 A.D or later, speculated). I had spent some time in Kiwi Land and thought is was amazing how a species (Birds) could evolve without mankind doing it's thing (Destruction of Enviornment). A Rhino is also an option.

Check out this link for ancient mammals:

The herbavore Giant Mammoths or Rhino would explain why the pilot was not eaten and just spit out on a tree after the Herbavore realized he wasn't a caeser salad as well as the knock down of the plane. Just a thought.....

Hi Aries: Welcome to the forum.
The orangutan is native to Malaysia...eastern Malaysia to be exact...on the island of Borneo. This is why it is considered to be Malaysian/Indonesian animal on the verge of extinction. Birute Galdakis' study center for orangutans is in the Indonesian area of Borneo. There are three countries on Borneo: Indonesia, Malaysia, and Brunei.

cccourt,

Thnkas for the clarification. The point I was trying to make is that the Orangutans developed individually on Borneo (Or wherever for that matter) after once being part of a larger land mass. It is know that Malaysia & Indoneasia were once part of a large pennisula which stretched from Asia to Australia or perhaps a narrow strait of water that seperated Asia and Australia (Explains extremley different Flora & Fauna on Aussie), however this straight was not enough from keeping ancient humans from migrating to. It is believed that the Aborigines developed from an out of Africa migration when this pennisula existed and as it receded with the ending of an ice age, they were isolated and allowed to develop independantly along with the Orangutans, etc. I think that this Island has a similar mammal on it and as the producers of the show stated (Earlier Post) that what will concern the survivors is not the Monster(s) directly, but what the existance of the Monster(s) represent. In any case, I look forward to seeing the direction the writers will go.
