Is Desmond the new Vincent?

This is going to be quick because I'm on my way out, but this thought just hit me and I wanted to share it. Could Desmond be a replacement for Vincent? It struck me as strange that Vincent was left behind when Michael and Walt left the island. We haven't seen him since but we now the miraculously alive and prestidigitacious Desmond. One thought I've had is that Vincent didn't really survive the crash but was a manifestation Smokey used when he wanted to be near the losties without scaring them. Now that the ones who cared about Vincent are gone, Smokey is using another figure to manifest within the camp. Any thoughts on this?

You know, when I was watching the Season 2 DVDs, I remember somewhere in the extras that TPTB said something about "...now that Micheal, Walt, and Vincent are gone..."

I guess it's an oversight, but it's a pretty obvious one, IMO.
