I think Hurley just wanted to get away from Walt, so he made up having to go to a meeting...

It was Hurley's way of running away from Walt. Cuz why? Hurley did "good" in -backgammon- and Walt was kickin' his big flabby butt, to the other side of the island. Walt even stated as Hurley left "Hey, but you owe me 20 thousand dollars!"

Walt even stated as Hurley left "Hey, but you owe me 20 thousand dollars!"

Yes, and to which Hurley replied "You'll get it."

As others have said it was most likely simply a ploy to get away from Matt. The thing I found fascinating, and about which I created a new topic, was the fact Backgammon was once again being prominently shown.

The fact Matt defeated Hurley, an accomplished tournament backgammon player, by rolling precisely the dice he needed at the moment as well as Hurley's remark "No one is that lucky!" strongly suggest that games and backgammon specificallyis some kind of clue. Especially when you take into consideration the fact Locke told Matt about Backgammon and how it was an ancient game. I got the impression that until that time Matt was unfamiliar with the game.

Then there were the black and white stones Jack found in the cave and later the black and white stones in Locke's eyes during Claire's dream. And oh yes, the Backgammon blots (pieces) were also black and white during Hurley and Matt's game.

Taking all of this into consideration i'm surprised this doesn't get more scrutiny.

Badger who is Matt? I thought that was Walt or does Walt have a twin brother Matt?? And as for Hurley's meeting I'm pretty sure he wanted to get to McDonalds before they stopped serving breakfast!!

Who is this Matt person you speak of? Another Canadian? I did, however, see WALT playing backgammon with Hurley.

Backgammon is a clue to the story or prehaps the force of the island.

I would think the Hurly line about being considered a warrior by some would have gotten more inquires.

Backgammon is believed to have originated in Mesopotamia in the Persian empire or the present day Iran, Iraq, and Syria and it is the oldest known recorded game in history. The game was typically played on surfaces such as wood, using stones as markers, and dice made from bones, stones, wood or pottery and it can be traced back thousands of years BC to boardgames played by the Egyptians, Sumerians, Romans, and Persians.

Hurley the warrior? I think he was a member of the WWE.

When Hurley States .. That back home he is some what of a warrior.. I immeditly thought of D&D. I think he's a gamer.

"I came in 17th place" Backgamon Compotetion.. I didn't even know they had them.

I got the idea that Hurley let because he was upset by Walt's last comment.

Walt referenced his Dad, Hurley thought he meant Michael, Walt said 'no, my other dad' (stepfather?), and immediately after Hurley sorta looked at him then got up and made his exit.

Maybe Hurley was ticked at the idea Walt was pulled away from this other Dad after his mother died by Michael...a perfect stranger.

Hurley backstory, hmm?

When Hurley States .. That back home he is some what of a warrior.. I immeditly thought of D&D. I think he's a gamer. I thought of a different kind of gamer when Hurley said the "warrior" line. I thought of FPS games. I wonder if we won't find that one of Hurley's hobbies is playing games like CounterStrike online and he was good at them.

However, I also think he plays D&D or some other RPG like that. He was also behind the golf game and now he turns out to be a backgammon player. I suspect Hurley likes to play many different kinds of games.

A thought that came to mind is that it would be funny if quiet, helpful, down to earth Hurley who so many people seem to discount or look down on because of his weight really is good for the $20,000 because he made millions working for a dot-com and got out before the bust.

"I came in 17th place" Backgamon Compotetion.. I didn't even know they had them. Oh, they have tournaments for just about everything under the sun.
There was a CSI episode earlier this year or sometime last year that revolved around a word-game tournament.

I think hurley got up and left because he was disgusted that a kid who only just learned the game beat someone who considered himself a very good player. He says 17th is quite good actually so he has most likely been in quite a few tournaments and knows what is good and isnt.

as for the warrior I agree with what the before person mentioned I think he is into a d&d type thing...maybe magic:the gathering. I know they have tournaments for both those.

As far as Hurley being a warrior, how about a "weekend warrior"? He won't say where his nickname came from, and I would bet money this is it.:x

I thought the $20,000 comment was funny. I thought that was so "deserted island" to bet huge sums of money with a kid. Just very funny. I also thought the warrior thing was refering to some sort of gaming, online or otherwise.

I have heard of a game called 'hurley' that looks a bit like lacrosse.

I am guessing Hurley is prob not a warrior in a game like Lacrosse. Just a theory.

I was thinking the same thing. The game is called hurling, and it is an ancient form of football. My guess is that Hurley was a good player (read: warrior), and that is also where his nickname derives.

I thought Hurling was done on Ice with brooms a oversize pucks. Try to stop the puck on the target and knock other people out.

Maybe he's a hurling champion.
