Solitary – 1.09

Our first introduction to Danielle Rousseau is her capture of Sayid. She cuts him down from one of her traps in the jungle. He awakes to find himself shackled to a metal bed. She starts his interrogation.

“Where’s Alex?” When Sayid asks whom she’s talking about, she sends an electrical charge through the metal bed that electrocutes him. “Where’s Alex?” Sayid has no idea who she’s talking about, so she electrocutes him again.

He tries to explain he’s a survivor of a plane crash. He was trying to find the source of a mayday transmission that’s been repeating on a loop for 16 years. She’s still not buying it and knocks him out using the rifle butt.

He comes to and finds her riffling through his pack. She finds the envelope with his name and the picture of Nadia inside. He explains who she is and Danielle begins to believe is story.

She shows him a broken music box given to her by Robert for their anniversary. Sayid volunteers to fix it, and she shoots him with a syringe full of something that renders him unconscious for a third time.

He comes to and finds himself in a chair. “Sorry about the sedative. It was the only safe way for me to move you…” He asks her how she came to the island, as he starts working on the music box. “We were part of a science team. Our vessel was 3 days out of Tahiti when our instruments malfunctioned. It was night, a storm, the sounds. The ship slammed into rocks, ran aground, the gull breached beyond repair. So, we made camp, dug out this temporary shelter. Temporary. Nearly 2 months we survived here…” She goes on to describe her visit to the Black Rock. “We were coming back from the Black Rock. It was them. They were the carriers. The others.” Sayid asks whether she’s seen other people on the island. “No, but I hear them. Out there, in the jungle. They whisper…”

Sayid fixes the music box and asks Danielle to let him go. She refuses. Suddenly, they hear sounds outside the hut. She explains if they’re lucky its one of the bears. When he says it might be the monster, she informs there are no monsters. She leaves to take a look around. Sayid uses the time to grab some maps and a rifle and leaves too.

He spots her in the jungle and raises the rifle. “Put the gun down Rousseau. Put it down on the ground.” She levels her rifle as well, and when nothing happens when he pulls the trigger, she tells him the firing pin has been removed. “Robert didn’t notice it was missing either when I shot him.” She explains that he was sick. “It took them, one after the other. K had no choice. They were already lost. What would have happened if we were rescued? I couldn’t let that happen. I won’t.” She goes on to tell him to watch the other survivors. Watch them closely. Then she tells him Alex was her child.

Numbers – 1.18

Hurley goes off looking for an explanation for the numbers. He figures since those same numbers were on Danielle’s map she should have some idea.

He finds her, or should I say she finds him in the jungle. She’s taken a couple of shots at him and Charlie, and now has Hurley at gun point.

After introductions, he asks her about the numbers. She gives a slightly different story this time around. “Our ship picked up a transmission, a voice repeating the numbers. We changed course to investigate. After we shipwrecked my team continued to search for the transmission source. It was weeks before we found the radio tower.” She goes on to explain, that the radio tower is up by the Black Rock. “Some of us continued to search for the meaning of those numbers while we waited for rescue. But then the sickness came. When my team was gone, I went back up to the tower and changed the transmission.”

Exodus – 1.23/24

Danielle comes to camp to tell the Losties the “Others” are coming. She then tells another story about her arrival on the island. “Our ship went aground on this island 16 years ago. There were 6 of us—my team, 6. At that time I was already 7 months pregnant. I delivered the infant myself. The baby and I were together for only 1 week when I saw black smoke—a pillar of black smoke 5 kilometers inland. That night they came—they came and took her—Alex. They took my baby. And now they’re coming again. They’re coming for all of you. You have only 3 choices—run, hide, or die.”

Jack decides to hide the survivors in the newly discovered hatch. He takes Danielle to see it, hoping she can shed some light on what it is. She insists she’s never seen it before.

She agrees to lead a small party to get some dynamite from the Black Rock, in the dark territory. After being on the trail for they rest for a while. She takes off her sweater to reveal some scratches on her arm.

Reaching the dark territory, she tells everyone they must keep moving. “This is where it all began -- where my team got infected -- where Montan lost his arm…”

Hearing the sound of the monster, everyone hides. After it leaves she explains it’s a security system. “its purpose is that of any security system—to protect something.” When asked what? “The island!”

Arriving at the Black Rock, which happens to be an old ship, Danielle tells Jack the dynamite is in the hole of the ship. Then she leaves.

Danielle is next seen looking for Sayid with the survivors heading to the caves. Charlie goes looking for him leaving Claire and the baby with her. Danielle asks the baby’s name. Then she wants to hold the baby. Claire notices the scratches and through a memory flash, realizes she’s the one who scratched Danielle. Before she can warn anyone, Danielle knocks her out and takes the baby.

Sayid and Charlie find her on the beach where the black smoke was emanating from. She tries to explain she was going to trade the baby for Alex. She said she heard whispers that they were coming for the boy. We find out at the end of this episode, Walt’s kidnapped.

One of Them – 2.14

Sayid accompanies Ana-Lucia into the jungle. She wants to show him what she found. Danielle! Sayid tells her to go back to camp, and not to tell anyone what she saw.

She takes him further into the jungle where she has someone caught in one of her net traps. “Help me. Hey, somebody here” Danielle tells Sayid, “Don’t believe a word he says. He’s one of them.”

Sayid cuts the man down, over Danielle’s opposition. The man panics and starts running, she puts an arrow through his shoulder from a crossbow she’s been caring. “He will lie. Know this—he will lie a long time. He will lie.”

Maternity Leave – 2.15

It seems Aaron’s got a fever. He’s been up all night crying. Claire is trying to keep him cool by putting a cold rag on his forehead. Suddenly Danielle appears. “He’s infected, isn’t he? Your child, he’s sick.” Kate comes running and scars Danielle away.

Afterwards, Kate and Claire go into the jungle looking for Danielle. They find her in a clearing. She demands Danielle take them to where she was scratched. Danielle agrees.

Upon arriving at the location, Danielle wants Claire to direct them from there. These memory flashes Claire has been experiencing are not giving her a complete picture of what happened. It seems she thinks Danielle was taking her back to her captors when she scratched her.

When Danielle realizes she doesn’t know where to go from here she gets angry and grabs Claire. Kate pulls her gun to force her back, but Danielle walks right up to Kate’s gun, until the barrel is against her chest. “Go ahead, please. Do it.”

Claire following another memory flash finds the Staff hatch. She and Danielle start to search while Kate tries to find where to turn the power on. They find the nursery, then the examining room. They upright a cabinet where Claire remembers the vaccine was kept. But, it’s empty.

After leaving the hatch, Claire realizes Danielle’s part in this whole affair. “You weren’t trying to take me back. You were trying to save me.” “I carried you on my back to your camp. I left you where they would find you.” Then Claire tells her about the young girl who helped her. The young girl was Alex, Danielle’s missing daughter.
