Most people are aware of the vallenzetti equation which predicts the untimely demise of civilization as we know it. The 'numbers' are a representation of the equation.

In order to change this equation a massive shift in one of the variables is required. One of the variables is the global population. Change this and you change the equation etc. etc.

What if the smoke monster is a representation of the virus that was conceived to change the populous (Virus was developed on the island - webmaze)?

What if somehow the virus has mutated on it's own evolutionary path and outgrown it's original purpose?

What if it had developed it's own conciousness?

I belive the smoke monster judges people. It simply destroys those that are either genetically incorrect, or have questionable ethics.

Everyone of the losties has a skeleton or four in the closet as we see in backstories. The others that we could deem as pure (Locke, Rose) have both been rewarded in different ways. Locke with the use of his legs, Rose with the remission of terminal cancer.

Bit rambling but I just wanted to get my ideas down. Have a feeling this will get moved to 'What i think..

I like that idea a lot. I even thought about it myself a while ago. But the whole overpopulation variable is not official. It's just speculation.
I guess that depends on how you interpret the orientation video, in particular this quote (http://www.losttv-forum.com/forum/showpost.php?p=745778&postcount=1):

I for one believe each category named is important in terms of DHARMA research and/or planning. In that I'd agree with shands99 that global population is related to a variable in the Valenzetti Equation.

I'd also wonder if the smoke monster is also related to categories of "pandemic" and/or "chemical and biological warfare" as well.

I personally believe Overpopulation is one of the variables they were trying to modify. But the Hanso Video doesnt say which environmental variables are related to which core numbers.

Overpopulation = Overuse of available resources (by which I include food supply) which leads to food shortages/absences leading to casualties of the predator. It's seen with predator/prey species in the wild; too many predators means not enough prey, leading to decreased predator numbers. :)

I think the odvious, Theyve fallen from the sky due to a massive electro magnetical surge and they are trapped, They discovered a secret island and secret technologies( DHARMA ) And they are still trying to figure out what has happened.
