I think it will be Jack's father or grandfather, he appeared after Jack confessed he probably did not want to be a doctor but it was like a family expectation. I think the man will be a relative of his that he will be able to confront about his pre-destined path into medicine.

If it was just a generic man in black he would have mentioned seeing him, but if it was some one he knew the other lost would think he was crazy running down the beach going "Grand Pa, Grand Pa!!!" That is why he has not said what he saw to anybody, yet.

And I think you're absolutely right. I think Jack is sick, not delusional. He's coming down with something and starting to hallucinate. I'm willing to bet that Jack's "flashback episode" will occur while he's ill.

Maybe that wound on is back is infected. Try as they might have it wasn't a very sterile stitching job. Jack doesn't seem to be the sort to complain if something is wrong with him. Or maybe it's just heat stroke.

It could also be his reaction to stress, he obviously does not want to be in charge but people keep coming to him for guidance and he has been challenged on most of his decisions.

Is Jack the character who is having trouble sleeping? I thought I read that somewhere. Maybe he is hallucinating because of lack of sleep.....

I'd posted this in another thread but it seems to fit here. My thoughts anyway

I think the mysterious guy that Jack keeps seeing is someone from his past. I think he's suffered some kind of loss (parents, wife, kids, etc) and that's why he's so reluctant to take on any kind of a role. He was running away from something that happened to him emotionally. That would explain why he didn't want anything to do with the memorial.

Dressed in the suit the guy reminded me of someone who had just come from a funeral.

When it comes to taking care of the injured he's doing what comes naturally to him and what he knows has to be done (in the case of burning the bodies).

Could that have been someone (likely his father) that Jack was traveling with? He sees him just after Rose speaks of her husband not being dead. Maybe Jack hallucinates his travel partner for a sec there.

Sure he wasn't seated next to Jack, but didn't he mention having his seat changed?

OK, I may have been dreaming, but did the trailer for next week's episode show Kate reaching out to touch the mysterious man? If so, this would indicate that he is not just a hallucination of Jack's.

Baron X and cgt I think you are absolutely right! We were talking about this in the chatroom last night. Next week's episode is entitled "White Rabbit" which was suggested to be a reference to Alice In Wonderland. In the previews of next week's episode we saw Jack hanging from a cliff so it has been surmised that Jack, in his delusional state is hallucinating about the man in the black suit from his past, and follows the guy accidentally almost falling into a hole.

Okay then we are agreed Jack is hallucenating, and the person is not real. If he was not somebody Jack knew, he would have said "hey look everybody who is that guy over there!!" But it is somebody he knows and he knows that the person can't be there so he's freakin'.

We will have to see what cause the trip- fever, sleep deprevation, stress, guilt perhaps............any thoughts, theories......

"White Rabbit" is an old Jefferson Airplane song, as well. The Airplane wrote it to explain drug use. When I saw that as the title of the episode, the song--and its drug-relatedness--immediately came to mind. Which then brought to mind Charlie.

Even though the episodes take us through straight time with flashbacks, the action and storylines in each episode do not necessarily directly follow from those of the previous episode. So, for instance, last night we did not get anything new at all on Kate's past. While we have been teased with Locke in the previous episodes, they gave us no inkling of last night's major storyline.

So I'm thinking that next week may have to do with hallucinating, drug use, Charlie, etc.

The description of next week's episode, White Rabbit, says Jack has been deprived of sleep and exhausted. He has been helping everyone else and, like the others, has been without food. So it would be natural he would be hallucinating about now and any thoughts/nightmares he has from his past would now be surfacing since his defenses are down.

What else did you learn about next week's epi? Do you think in White Rabbit, they're going to focus on Jack's past (and the creepy man in the suit) or Kate's past?

I think we are done with Kate for a few weeks, they will spend our time filling background for a different character a week for a while. Just enough to answer some questions, not answer some questions and raise some more questions.

Does anyone else see any significance in the fact that the man in the black suit had on white tennis shoes (like the one that was hanging in the tree next to Jack when he woke up at the beginning of the pilot episode)?

-eta - nevermind - just saw this addressed in the caption of the man in black suit thread.....sorry
