View Full Version : Hairbrushes
As is the point with this show, it seems we should never dismiss anything that is mentioned.
So I was wondering, does anyone have any comments about Claire's statement that she has searched 20 suitcases and was not able to find any hairbrushes?

In some cases, I think that things are jsut what they appear. The shoe hanging from the tree, in my opinion, doesn't have any significance outside of a shoe hanging from a tree. Not everything falling from the sky will land on the ground necessarily.
Inthe case of the brush, I think she was just making conversation/asking a hygenal question.
I think there are a lot of things speckled throughout the episodes that have significance, but at some point standard storytelling will also need to be done.

I agree with Lost in Translation, but I think it's also a nod to the fact that a lot of people would start the "how do the women look so perfectly groomed after a plan crash?" thing.

LOL, PlaneJane!
Most people carry hairbrushes and stuff in their carry-ons. I would think they got all those out of the fuselage, but with all those dead bodies, I'm not sure.

many people seem to have kept hair, did Claire ask anybody besides Kate or was her search limited to unattended suitcases?
I hope it is not hinge point for some future story, that would just be silly. Tonight on Lost: The survivors lack of grooming tools leads to a dangerous confrontation that one of them will regret. Locke is shunned by the group because of his lack of empathy for their plight.

it's definitely an attempt to show they are trying to explain personal hygenie. claire's hair is starting to look a little matted. meanwhile (sigh) kate still looks fabulous.:\

Women carry hair brushes in their purses. Purses are generally shoved under the seat for easy access. If the plane blew apart, everything not nailed down flew out the back. Consequently the contents of the purses are scattered over the sea and on the island. Eventually they'll come across one.

Now I know with all those suitcases there has to be a hairbrush or comb somewhere in them. As well as a shaving kit for the men.

I bet Shannon's found hers, and a whole array of styling products. And possibly a solar powered blow dryer.

That's funny about Shannon. It reminded me of a girl I knew (that's a lot like Shannon now that you mention it) that went camping with her boyfriend and a lot of other people. She had to go out and buy a butane powered curling iron TO GO CAMPING! I laughed so hard at that. Bet Shannon wishes she had one of those in her luggage she found. LOL

We've got to remember a few things when we pick this show to pieces:
- sometimes, a cigar is just a cigar
- the producers are human and make mistakes. A lot of mistakes, it appears. These things aren't significant, just annoying.
- J.J. Abrams has a well-deserved reputation for inserting 'practical jokes' into his shows to excite viewer comment. They aren't relevant to anything that's going on in any way, shape or form. He's a nose-tweaker; on occasion this is funny, but Abrams seems to treat this like most men treat farts - EVERY fart is funny, every time, and the more farts the funnier it gets.

I took Claire's question to Kate to be nothing more than an ice breaker, something to start up a conversation.

And by "ice breaker", I assume you mean "come on". Because what good is a scene of two attractive people of the same sex discussing appearance and hygiene if not as a lead-in to this becoming The Island Of The Gay? Claire was totally hitting on Kate. That whole "what's your sign?" business? :rollin

Ah, I'm not the only who was thinking "man, just how old is that line?" Our little Claire turns out to be bisexual! And Kate - hey, Kate told Sawyer she isn't like most girls! That would explain why she hasn't tried to jump Jack yet, and doesn't seem to be interested in either Sawyer or Charlie.
So, a bisexual Claire and a gay Kate. Wonder how that'd turn out?

My first thought re: the hairbrush scene was - "sticks" Shannon. IMO She has that air of entitlement where I could see her hoarding supplies at the others expense. Perhaps that's why she was aggravated with Sawyer during her bartering - she didn't find it first. I wouldn't be surprised to find out that she stole the water too. Boone would have covered for her (he never came right out and admitted it, right"?) to fulfill his idea of chivalry - while at the same time if he knew Shannon had the water, that same sense would have compelled him to bring some of the water to Claire.
Well this post sure went in a different direction than I originally intended!

Jackgirl, I think it was just a case of a couple guys thinking (hoping) any time there are 2 good looking women in a scene together there is a chance for some lesbian love. :evil

I'm with you on this, JGF. It was just conversation....small talk between 2 women. Claire trying to open up communication with Kate. Kate has been out doing some pretty wild stuff on the island, while Claire has to stay put.

Why is it most men seem to want the lesbian scene? To be honest most women could do without seeing a two man scenario.
This is not a judgement of any kind - just saying it's not exactly one of my fantasy scenes (they usually involve pirates, Vikings and of late Sawyer).

For the same reason many more females would consider engaging in some sort of sexual activity with their own gender than would males. It's simply human (mammalian, etc.) nature, which also explains why nomatter how commited, males would always at least to some extent enjoy "the company" of a female other than their mate. I'm sorry, this topic begs for a complete essay, and I've written enough this evening.
Please, take my word for it, that simply seeing two females "engaging" each other is a stimulus for a majority of males, while the opposite is a stimulus for as low a percentage of females as males in general.

That's probably very true but I'm curious why you think it's human nature. Women are generally more emotionally expressive, more in need of physical comfort and warmth. I can see how this need for expression might lead to "other things".
I view this though as an emotional decision not really part of human nature. Human nature would almost preclude this possibility entirely. Sex drive, although fun and satisfying, is probably part of our being primarily as a means to procreate. That's the basic reason for it. So why would a woman's nature urge her toward another of her own gender, knowing it's in defiance of her most basic urges? I'm not saying this from a sociological standpoint, merely as a biological function - we have the equipment and being with another woman negates the possibility of using it. That's the only reason I wonder why you think it might be human nature. For me it seems like it comes from a more emotional place.

I'd say they find the French woman living on the island and have a wild threesome, but that'd be the wrong parts of my brain talking.

While the sex drive may have started off as simply the need to procreate, It has become much more than that. Physical intimacy, including but not limited to sexual intimacy, helps generate and reinforce emotional intimacy. It makes bonds between people. Considering the sizable investment of time and energy necessary to raise human young, since we don't just spawn and leave our hundreds of eggs to fend for themselves, it makes sense to me that we would link the activity of procreation with the subsequent involvement to ensure the young are successful. Plus, you know, "it takes a village" and all that.
And come on, hairbrushes? I mean, she didn't come right out and say "Will you brush my hair?" but she was darn close (And no, JG, I don't really believe this either :p ). Maybe Claire wasn't angling to get in Kate's pants. She told Charlie later on that nobody will even look her in the eye. She may have been hoping for some comfort. It's really nice to have someone else brush your hair for you. Assuming they know how to do it without hurting you, of course, and your odds of that are better with another long-haired person. It's hard to go for long periods of time with no physical contact.
Claire was clearly reaching out. How much she was reaching out, well, that's left up to you. *cue cheesy 70s music*
Yeah, the thing with the missing brushes - DNA samples :)

I think the mentioning of the absence of hairbrushes will prove to be significant, and that it may be what helped the Others form their "list."
Just to point out...when Claire mentioned that there were no hairbrushes (she couldn't find one) Kate implies (through a look to Sawyer) that Sawyer is the likely holder of hairbrushes.
The point the writers were trying to make was that Sawyer was scavenging and becoming the de-facto General Store.

Makes sense for DNA testing.
Other put Goodwin / Ethan in camp, take hairbrushes.
Quick and easy DNA tests
Speaking as a first grade teacher, I have a theory of my own about the missing hairbrushes. Either Bob the Tomato took them and gave them to the peach ('cause he's got hair), or Larry the Cucumber has them so he can see if he can find his own that Bob gave to the peach. Locke has seen Larry(AKA the monster) and is in on the whole thing, because like Larry, he hasn't got hair, and can sympathize with this need for a hairbrush even when folicularly challenged.
I know, I spend too much time watching VeggieTales with my students.

Except Locke doesn't have hair. And some of the balding redshirts don't need hairbrushes, and my husband, who has thick hair, just uses a comb. If they had time for hairbrush gathering, they had time to just swab the mouths of all their soon-to-be "survivors."
the others took the hairbrushes because if the losties had them and all brushed their hair at once, the static electricity generated would be enough to reverse the polarity of the islands magnets.
by the way, kate is the polar bear and charlie is the black rock.
