Remember someone (I think the black lady) saying the sound the creatures made was familiar? I wonder what that means?

I did notice that. And when someone asked where she was from, she said the Bronx. So... that's interesting. I wonder if that is a hint or anything? There IS the Bronx Zoo... lol.

On a serious note- there's another line just after where a man says "We don't even know if we're ON an island." Which is true. We've never seen an ariel shot of the island...
The Bronx part, I think maybe we're looking at the Zoo, or perhaps something much more sinister.....

Great theory... It's J-Lo's ass that's knocking down those trees. You know it's big enough to do it... :lol

Yea, that'd be funny. I taped the 1st part and watched it over and when Rose siad it sounded familiar and that she lived in the Bronx I heard Charlie say something. It sounded like he said it could be a monkey. lol

Anyone think this show hints at the Island of Dr. Moreau?
Summary of book from bartleby.com:
On a deceivingly beautiful island in the South Seas exists the sinister kingdom of Doctor Moreau. Shipwrecked in this seeming paradise, the unfortunate Edward Prendick stumbles upon the wild beastly creations of the sadistic doctor and enters into a bizarre and terrifying world of a doctor who plays an evil God and cruelly creates monstrosities of living creatures.

Hey, I don't know about "sounds familiar" but LOOKS FAMILIAR...absolutely!
Check out the end of the B Action Flick "Deep Rising."
Same. Exact. Monster.

Comparisons of this show to that movie will result in immediate execution.

I know...I know. But still. The last scene in, um "that movie" shows the three main characters stuck on an island, looking up into the forest in horror as THAT SAME EXACT creature frolics about in the trees. I mean EXACT. Sorry.
My husband made me sit through it (that movie) after I showed him "Lost" because he remembered that scene. He said, "anything look familiar?" Um, yes -- quite.
It goes without saying that "Lost" is superior in every way. Even if "the creature" is a direct lift from a cheese-ball flick.
Don't shoot the messenger!
The monster sound is very similar to the sound the plane made when it was crashing down. It was def not exact, but very close to the same

i noticed that too....it was making the same sound.
I heard it, they were saying it sounds familiar and someone said it could be a monkey, and someone else said maybe its Monkey Island or something, and then someone else said we don't know its an island...but i missed the bronx thing. Heh.
Anyway, I dunno...but when it was raining and Claire and Rose were looking at the woods where the creature was, Rose was saying oh my god and it sounded like she sort of saw something or recognized something.
Maybe I'm just over-analyzing. :(

Over in the spoiler forum I posted in response to a thread, as its not a spoiler (and relevant) I'll repost this portion
I first "lurked" at this board after watching part 1 of the pilot and saw several posts about the "roar" being "metallic" sounding. I have to admit thinking the sound did seem a little "off" for something natural. During the rebroadcast I listened closely and have to say I imagined hearing 2 sounds during the "beach encounter", one "metallic/mechanical" and one "natural". The metallic/mechanical sound seemed to be more at the beginning then stopped and then the sound was more natural sounding. Letting my imagination go, I began to think perhaps it was the opening of a door (something motorized); like some undergound passage/pit was opened and a creature emerged (the creature did seem to "appear" out of nowhere). The sounds that are heard when the pilot is yanked from the cockpit don't sound the same to me as the ones heard by the group on the beach.
Can we be sure that the noise that sounded familiar to Rose (the black lady from the Bronx who sat across the aisle from Dr Jack) was actually made by the creature? Some people have said there are a lot of construction noises in the Bronx (I wouldn't know) so that could support a mechanical theory.
Did it seem like there were more than one kind of noise to anyone else?

During tonight's episode, "white rabbit", did anyone else notice the sounds in Jack's flashback sequence?
It's the first flashback. It starts with a closeup of Jack's face focusing on his eye. We hear a "metallic" sound repeating. The shot goes wider and we see a bully throwing one of Jack's friends up against a chain link fence. It is repeated several times. The sound that makes seems to me to match some of the machine like sounds we hear the jungle creature make.
I need to go back and listen again to compare the two sounds.
I also found it interesting how the first shot we see of Jack on the island seems to mirror the beginning of the flashback scene of him as a kid....
Mr U, I feel you're on the right track with the construction comment.
Last week I was in NYC for 3 days. I wasn't in the Bronx....I was staying at 70th / York on the east side of Manhatten. Me and the wife kept hearing the "trumpetting" noise and at first thought it may be the subways. However, the 2nd day there we took a ride back on the subways and didn't hear the sound at all.
On the final day, luck was on our side. After going for a walk on a quest for coffee, I was returning to York and suddenly heard the sound, and this time it was close. I turned around and the sound seemed to come from.....an external construction elevator. Elevator stopped....sound stopped. Elevator started again....sound started again. Elevator stopped again...sound stopped again. The sound was an uncanny match....very very very close to dead on. It was dead on in the pattern....a sound where the pitch started by "ramping up" and then maintained it's pitch until it was done.
So, the sound being used...and arguably the sound Rose found familiar, matches a construction elevator? Breaking it down....my guess is that the elevator uses hydraulics to power it. So in particular it would be the hydraulics system making the sound. To speculate even further, it would be the pump of the hydraulics system which would most likely make noise.
It doesn't necessary mean that the "monster" has a hydraulic system...like someone else said "it seems to come from nowhere" and hydraulics could be used to power large gates or doors which lead underground. Our survivors don't seem to be making it a priority to investigate the areas they've seen the monster.....too bad, I bet there are some valuable scooby clues there (like finding a giant doorway to an underground series of tunnels). :D
