Note: Since I do the walkthroughs in chronological order, it made sense to me to take the action from 3.14 Exposé and place it in chronological order. Also, Nikki and Paulo's flashbacks (as with Jin and Sun flashbacks) may start with one character and transition to end with the other character. The ones that start with Nikki are so noted. Since this is Paulo's walkthrough, I did not include Nikki-only information.

(From 3.14 Exposé Nikki's Flashback - 84 Days Ago).
Famous television producer, Howard L. Zukerman, is seated at his dinner table with Nikki Fernandez, his lover and recent guest star on his hit series, Exposé. Howard turns toward the kitchen and says, "Paulo, come in here." Paulo enters the dining area, basket of bread and rolls. As he sets the basket on the table, Paulo says, "Yes, sir." Howard, motioning toward Nikki, tells Paulo he has a new fan. Paulo looks over at her as she gushes, "The food is amazing!" Smiling, he turns his attention to pouring coffee as he replies, "You're too kind. The secret is the um...shaved truffles. Luckily for you, they're in season." Nikki loudly whispers, "You know? .... you should ask for a raise." Paulo smiles, excuses himself, and returns to the kitchen.

A short time later, Paulo re-enters the dining room in response to Nikki's anxious call. He arrives just as Howard appears to exhale his last breath. Paulo quickly checks Howard's pulse. He looks over at Nikki and says quietly, "He's gone." Then Paulo stares down at Howard. Nikki leans over and rips Howard's shirt open, revealing a chain around his neck with a key on it. Nikki snatches the key and rips the chain from Howard's neck. Then she sighs and sounding irritated, tells Paulo, "I would have loved it if you could've figured out a way where I didn't have to eat the same food as him." Paulo, expressionless, just stares at her. Then Paulo follows Nikki into another room in the house.

As they enter Howard's walk-in closet, Paulo asks, "So, nobody else knows about this thing?" Nikki removes a panel from the wall, revealing a safe. She assures him that no one knows - everything in there is "way off the books". As Nikki starts to open the safe, Paulo begins to light a cigarette. She grabs the cigarette away from him, saying, "Ashes are evidence, Paulo. We poisoned him. Let's not poison ourselves." She hands the cigarette back to him, which he pockets. Then Nikki opens the safe and removes a matryoshka doll (Russian nesting doll). Paulo stares over Nikki's shoulder as she takes the doll apart. Enthralled at what is hidden within, Paulo breathes deeply and grins as Nikki says, "Razzle freaking dazzle.")

(From 3.14 Exposé Nikki's Flashback - 80 Days Ago)
Paulo and Nikki sit at a table in a waiting area in the Sydney airport. Paulo reads from a newspaper with a picture of Howard L Zukerman, "English expat, Howard L. Zukerman, the creative force behind such hit shows as 'Exposé', 'Strike Team Alpha', and 'Dr. Kincaid, Esquire', was found dead in his palatial Sydney estate from heart failure." The both laugh and then they kiss. Nikki pulls away from Paulo and asks if he's chewing gum. Paulo opens a bag (the Russian nesting doll is sticking out of one of the pockets) and removes some Nicotine gum. He shows the box to Nikki and tells her he quit.

After stashing the gum back in the bag, Paulo and Nikki share a toast to their new life together. They become distracted by the sound of a young woman complaining loudly. Paulo turns around and sees Boone and Shannon looking around. Shannon is loudly and nastily complaining to Boone, "There's no where to sit. No tables. No chairs. Nothing. Good call Boone." Boone asks, "You want me to just grab a chair from the restaurant?" Shannon angrily retorts, "No forget it, let's just leave. You already screwed us out of seats in first class. Why would you be able to find them here?"

Boone approaches Nikki and Paulo's table and asks Paulo if he can take one of the extra chairs. Paulo removes his belongings from the chair and tells Boone, "Yep, be my guest." Shannon, raising her voice, says, "Boone! Let's just go!" Boone thanks Paulo and follows Shannon. Everyone watches Shannon and Boone walk away as Shannon says loudly, "If you'd quit flirting with random guys, maybe we could actually get on the plane." Nikki asks Paulo to promise her that they will never turn out like them. Paulo smiles and says softly, "I promise." Then they kiss again.)

Day 1 (September 22, 2004)

(From 3.14 Exposé Nikki's Flashback - 80 Days Ago)

Paulo stands close to the fuselage debris, staring out at the ocean. Paulo appears to be in shock. His side of his face, nose and mouth is streaked with blood. His eyes are watery and he appears to have a couple of gashes on his face and neck. Nikki approaches him and asks if he's OK. Without looking at her, Paulo whispers, "Yeah. I think so." Nikki grabs his face with both of her hands and tells him to look at her. Paulo, breathing hard, looks at her as she asks, "Where's the bag?" Not believing his ears, he asks, "What?" Nikki, again asks frantically, "The bag! Paulo, where is it?"

Day 6 (September 27, 2004)

(3.14 Exposé Flashback - 75 Days Ago)

It's night and Nikki and Paulo are going through the luggage scattered around the plane debris, looking for their bag. Nikki tells Paulo there no such thing as monsters. Paulo suggests that it may be a dinosaur, but Nikki points out that this is not Jurassic Park - it's the South Pacific. Paulo asks, "Then what was it? You saw the trees move." Nikki, now irritated, tells Paulo, "Would you start focusing? We've been here for 6 days, okay. The coast guard is going to get here any second and I really don't think that they're going to take 'Hey, you know what? I'm looking for my script bag' as an excuse for not getting on the rescue boat." Paulo says, "Okay ... okay ... okay", and continues going through the suitcases.

They are interrupted when Ethan walks up and asks if they lost their luggage. Paulo and Nikki stare at Ethan wordlessly as he continues telling them that he also lost his luggage, but has found other clothing that might fit them. Then they all introduce themselves and shake hands. After the introductions, Nikki tells Ethan, "And you are so sweet Ethan, but actually we're not looking for clothes. Yeah, see Paulo here lost his nicotine gum." Ethan tells them they may have more luck looking in inland. Puzzled, Paulo asks, "In the jungle?" Ethan then explains, "The plane split apart when it was over the island so some of the stuff might have rained down in there. "

Just then an argument breaks out in the background and Arzt comes running by, yelling, "Boone! Boone took the water." Everyone starts running towards Boone, who is saying, "It got out of hand. No one would have understood." Kate asks, "What is going on?" Boone defensively replies, "Someone had to take responsibility for it. It would have never lasted... " Just then Charlie yells and pushes Boone, but Sayid pulls him away before anyone throws any punches. Just then, Jack yells out, "Leave him alone!" Everyone grows quiet as they all turn toward Jack.

Paulo and Nikki stand close to Hurley along with Arzt and Ethan as Jack continues talking, "It's been 6 days. We're all still waiting for someone to come. We have to stop waiting. We need to start figuring things out. Now I found water...fresh water up in the valley. I'll take in a group at first light. If you don't want to come then find a way to contribute. Because every man for himself is not gonna work. But if we can't live together...we're gonna die alone." Paulo stares solemnly at Jack as his words hang in the air.

Day 24 (October 15, 2004)

(3.14 Exposé Nikki's Flashback - 57 Days Ago )

Paulo stands in the background as Nikki approaches Dr. Arzt under the ruse of determining the possible location of their luggage in the jungle based on the trajectory of the plane crash.

Later, Nikki (with a map drawn by Arzt) leads Paulo through the jungle. Paulo questions her as they trudge through the jungle growth, "Are you sure we should be listening to a high school science teacher?" Nikki replies, "Junior high and yes. What's your problem with Leslie anyway? " Paulo sarcastically repeats Arzt's first name, "Leslie." Nikki laughs and accuses Paulo of being jealous. Paulo denies this, but Nikki mockingly continues, "Yeah, his spiders turn me on so much, I had to sleep with him to get the map." Paulo quickly retorts, "I wouldn't be surprised. You slept with Zukerman." Nikki stops, gives Paulo a hurt look and says, "I did that for us." Then she walks quickly away.

Paulo follows her and throwing his arms wide, apologizes, saying, " I'm sorry, I just...I don't trust that guy. You should have gone to Ethan. He would have helped." Nikki, looking upward, stops and motions Paulo to look up as well. Paulo glances up and sees the Beech craft perched precariously amid the jungle growth on the side of a cliff. Paulo remarks softly, "Another plane ... looks like it's been here a while." Nikki tells Paulo to go up there, suggesting that there might be a radio. Paulo looks at her and laughs, saying, "Are you insane? If I go up there that thing is gonna fall." Nikki, while looking up at the plane, shakes her head and reassures Paulo that the plane will not fall. Paulo looks at her in disbelief and asks, "What? You want me to die?" Then he turns and starts walking away as he says, "Come on. Let's keep moving."

They continue walking, Paulo now leading the way. He walks across something metal, but doesn't seem to notice. Nikki, walking behind him stops and asks, "What is that?" Paulo turns back and looking down sees a metal latch jutting out of the foliage and dirt. He and Nikki kneel down and wipe the dirt away. Nikki turns the latch on one side while Paulo uses a rock to turn the latch on the other side. Then together, they lift the lids revealing a ladder that descends down a dark shaft. Paulo starts to climb in, saying, "Let's check it out!" Nikki stops him, saying sarcastically, " Whoa. So, our carry on bag fell from the sky, opened a manhole, crawled inside, and closed the doors behind itself? You don't want to climb up to a plane, but... now you want to climb down a ladder into a dark tunnel? I don't think so." Paulo jumps back as Nikki slams her side of the lid and walks away. Paulo stares after her and then looks back down the shaft.

Day 33 (October 3, 2004)

(3.14 Exposé Flashback - 48 Days Ago)

Paulo and Nikki approach Kate, Shannon and Artz, who appear to be having an argument on the beach. Nikki grabs Arzt's arm and asks what's going on. Shannon nastily replies, "Kate and her two boyfriends found a case of guns that fell out of the plane, but they decided that they really didn't need to tell the camp... " Kate cuts her off, saying, " Look! The case is locked. The key is around Jack's neck, alright. I promise you they're safe." Arzt points a finger at Kate and says, "You're all out of control. The pigs are walking here." Then Arzt becomes extremely agitated and waving his arms around, he shouts, "Huh? The pigs are walking!" Paulo watches Arzt as he turns and stomps away. Shannon also walks away in disgust, leaving Kate with Nikki and Paulo. Nikki draws closer to Kate and asks, "So, where did you say you found that case?"

Later, Nikki and Paulo stand near the lake with the waterfall where Sawyer and Kate found the marshal's case of guns. Nikki tells Paulo, "It's just water, Paulo. Stop being such a wus and dive in." Paulo asks, "Why me?" Nikki sarcastically replies, "Well, as you had no trouble reminding me, I slept with Howie Zukerman, so the least you could do is go for a swim...and Kate said they found the case on the bottom." Paulo coldly looks at Nikki and asks, " If you didn't need me to find that bag, would we still be together?" Nikki replies, "That bag is worth 8 million dollars. Just dive in, Paulo."

Paulo dives from the side of the waterfall and swims past the two dead bodies in the airline seats. He sees the bag wedged between two rocks. He surfaces, empty-handed, and Nikki asks, "Well?" Paulo tells her, "Nothing." Nikki asks, "There's nothing down there?" Paulo, still treading water, responds, "Just dead bodies." Frustrated, Nikki turns and walks away. After she is out of sight, Paulo dives back down under the water.

Day 49 (November 9, 2004)

(3.14 Exposé Flashback - 32 Days Ago)

Paulo is kneeling on the beach and nervously rummaging through his bag. With shaking hands, he removes the nicotine gum from the bag and while glancing around takes out a couple of pieces. He pops them into his mouth and with a sigh of relief, begins chewing. Calming down, Paulo glances back toward the camp and then begins digging a hole.

Locke, wearing a backpack and holding a torch, walks up and says, "Nice night." Paulo, startled and shaken, looks up and at the same time hides the Russian nesting doll behind his back. Locke asks, "Whatcha doing?" Paulo replies, "Nothing." Locke presses his lips together, nods, then says, "It looks like you're digging a hole. Every man's entitled to his secrets Paulo, but can I give you a piece of advice?" Paulo replies, "Please, John." Locke advises, "You should put the shovel away and save yourself some trouble." Paulo snaps back, "Why is that?" Locke explains, "Things don't stay buried on this island. The beach is eroding. Winter's coming, high tide. Whatever it is you're hiding, make sure you pick a spot that won't wash away." Then as Locke leaves, he says, "See you back at camp." Paulo nods and stares after him as he walks away. Then he picks up the Russian nesting doll and stares at it, lost in thought.

Later, Paulo descends the ladder into the Pearl station. He clicks on a flashlight and begins to explore the station. Arriving in the monitoring room, he notices the center monitor is on, showing static. He then enters a bathroom, shining the light on the tank top. Paulo removes the Russian nesting doll from his bag and hides it under the float in the toilet tank. As he replaces the lid, he hears a man's voice ask, "Who left this open?". He quickly closes the door and turns off his flashlight as a woman's voice now responds to the man, "Tom was down here a couple of days ago." The man orders, "Have him cover it up with the plane."

Paulo watches as Ben, followed by Juliet enter the monitoring room. They are both dressed in raggedy clothes. Ben walks up to the monitor, showing static and flips the channels until he gets a picture. Juliet approaches the monitor and asks, "That him? ... Shephard?" ( The monitor shows Jack, sitting in the Swan station.)

Ben and Juliet's conversation:
Ben: Yes.
Juliet: He's cute. Why are we doing this? Shephard will never agree to do the surgery.
Ben: No, I can convince him to do it.
Juliet: How?
Ben: Same way I get anybody to do anything. I find out what he's emotionally invested in...and I exploit it.
Juliet: So, what, we just grab all 3 of them? ...Ford and Austen too?
Ben: No, they need to come to us.
Juliet: And how do we make that happen?
Ben: Michael of course.
Juliet: Are we done here? This place gives me the creeps.
They turn off the lights and leave the Pearl station.

Paulo turns his flashlight on and exits the bathroom. He finds a walkie-talkie on a table. He tests it and finds that it works.

3.03 Further Instructions

Paulo is propped up against a tree, sleeping as Charlie and Locke bring the wounded Eko back to the beach camp. Claire calls out, waking Paulo. He gets up and looking at the trio, asks, "What happened?" He follows along as Charlie and Locke struggle to get Eko to shelter.

The other survivors gather around as Charlie takes Eko into a tent. Nikki keeps saying to get Jack, but Hurley cuts her off and tells her that Jack isn't coming back - that "they" have him. Paulo joins the conversation and asks, "What do you mean they? Who's they?" Locke answers saying, "They are the Others. And, yes, they've taken Jack, and Kate and Sawyer." Paulo, looking perplexed, asks, "How? What happened?"

Then when someone asks about Sun, Jin and Sayid, Locke responds, "I don't know. I'm going to find our friends. I don't know how yet, but I will. We're going to find them. All of them. And then we're going to bring them home. But first things first, we've got to look out for Mr. Eko." At this point Locke tells Paulo and Nikki to bring towels and water.

Day 70 (November 30, 2004)
3.04 Every Man for Himself

Paulo is practicing his drive shot, hitting kiwi into the ocean with a wood. Desmond approaches and tells Paulo that Hurley said it would be okay for Desmond to take one of the clubs. Paulo asks if that means he's off to save the day. Desmond laughs and then asks if it's okay to take one of the clubs. Paulo, getting ready to take another shot, says, "Take the 5 iron. I never use it. That way when you die in the jungle, doing whatever you're doing, I don't have to go looking for it."

Desmond eyes him and then takes the iron thanking him. Paulo drives another kiwi into the ocean (not very far). Desmond turns and tells him he might want to square his shoulders a bit. Paulo asks if he plays golf. Desmond smiles and says, "I'm Scottish. Cheers!" Paulo stares after him as Desmond walks away.

Day 72 (December 2, 2004)

Paulo walks up to the community "kitchen table" and starts preparing something to eat just as Locke, Desmond and Sayid arrive. Locke invites anyone who wants to come along and join their trek to the Pearl Station. As Locke leaves to go fill water bottles, Nikki informs him that she'll go. Paulo abruptly stops opening a can and looking at Nikki says, "What?"

As Nikki starts packing up, Paulo asks her, "You're not serious?" She tells him that he always whines about not being included and now is their chance. Paulo follows Nikki as she joins the group.

(Note: the above scene is also included in Paulo's Flashback from 3.14 Exposé - 9 Days Ago)

Later, Paulo and the rest of Locke's company catch up to Eko near a jungle stream. The group continues through the jungle with Paulo bringing up the rear. Eventually they arrive at the Beech craft clearing and Paulo lowers his water bottle, staring at the sight before him. As he follows Sayid and Desmond over to the Pearl hatch, he quietly asks Nikki, "What is Eko looking for?" She tells him that his brother's body is in the plane. Paulo watches as Sayid and Desmond open the heavy doors - lending a hand at the last minute. Then he peers down the shaft as Sayid begins to descend.

(Paulo's Flashback from 3.14 Exposé - 9 Days Ago)

Later, down in the Pearl station, Paulo enters the bathroom and removes the toilet tank lid. Reaching down into the water, he grabs the Russian nesting doll and withdraws it. He opens the first layer and sets it aside. Then he opens the next layered doll and sets that aside as well. He tries to open the third layered doll but cannot get it to twist open. He sets it down on the floor and stomps on it with his foot. The doll breaks open, revealing a black pouch that was hidden inside. Paulo grabs the pouch and sticks it down the front of his pants. Then he places the layers of dolls and pieces of the broken doll inside the toilet tank and places the lid back on. He composes himself and is about to exit. Then he reaches back and flushes the toilet.

While Sayid tries to patch in a feed from the other stations, Paulo exits an adjacent room accompanied by the loud sound of a flushing toilet. Having startled everyone, Paulo is now the center of attention. He points back over his shoulder and announces, "Well, the toilet still works." Without commenting, everyone turns back to what they were doing.

(Note: The above scene of Paulo exiting the backroom is repeated in Paulo's Flashback from 3.14 Exposé - 9 Days Ago)

One of the monitors suddenly "comes to life" and shows a scene in another hatch. In awe, Nikki whispers, "Wow, what is it?" Paulo points with a partially eaten piece of fruit and says, "Hmmm. Those are computers! Great! That's what you're looking for. Now we can get out of here." Nikki gasps as the image of an eye patch man appears on the screen. Paulo watches silently as the eye-patch man reaches up and with a turning motion disables the surveillance camera supplying the feed. As the monitor returns to static, Locke turns, smiles and says, "I guess he'll be expecting us."

A short time later, they all hear the loud "steam-whistle" sound of the monster. Everyone quickly leaves the Pearl and runs toward the sound. Paulo (once again bringing up the rear) tops the rise of a hill and drawing next to Nikki stares as Locke tries to help the mortally wounded Eko. After whispering something in Locke's ear, Eko quietly passes away.

Paulo watches as Locke places his hand over Eko's eyes, closing them one last time. After a few moments, Sayid takes a step forward and asks, "What did he say, John?" Locke looks up at Sayid and solemnly says, "He said, 'We're next.' "

3.06 I Do

Paulo stands over Eko's body as Desmond drapes a sheet over his remains. Locke joins everyone standing around the body and Nikki asks what killed Eko. Paulo stands slightly behind Nikki, eyes downcast, as Locke tells them, an animal - maybe one of the bears got him. He continues to listen as Locke explains they are going to bury Eko there as opposed to the beach camp. Paulo also stands and listens while Locke and Sayid discuss Locke going off by himself to get shovels.

Later, during the funeral, Paulo stands at the foot of Eko's grave, hand propped on the makeshift shovel, and listens while Locke delivers Eko's eulogy.

Paulo is standing at the makeshift "kitchen" shelves. He moves some of the stocked items and then complains, "Well, we are out of Dharma oat bars. Nikki, standing near the table, says, "Already?" and checks behind some other supplies while Paulo watches.

Just then, Hurley comes running into camp yelling for everyone. Paulo joins the small crowd gathered around him. Breathing hard, Hurley holds up the key chain and trying to catch his breath says, "Car!" Hurley continues saying, "I found a car ... tipped over in the jungle ... and we can totally fix it! ... and get it going again!" As Hurley starts to turn back toward the jungle, he says, "It's not far...c'mon!"

Paulo stops him when he asks, "Why do we need to start a car?" Hurley replies, "Because ... it will be fun!" Paulo raises his head, closes his eyes and sighs "Oh..." Hurley then continues, "We can all use some fun ... I mean ... after everything that's happened ...we need it!" Then Hurley asks exuberantly, "So, who's with me?"

Nobody steps forward. Paulo, motioning back over his shoulder, says, "Well, I've got to get some bananas. Sorry." Then as he starts to turn away, he hooks his finger around one of the back belt loops on Nikki's shorts and pulls her away before she can volunteer.

Paulo, carrying a rolled up magazine, is walking along the beach campsite. As he nears a group, reconstructing the ping pong table closer to the beach, Sawyer confronts him angrily saying, "That's my Guns and Ammo! Where the hell did you get it?" Paulo replies, "It was in the magazine stack. We share things now." Sawyer draws closer to Paulo, replying bitterly, "Listen, Zorro, it was in my stuff!" Then Sawyer turns and addresses everyone on the beach accusing them of taking all his stuff when they thought he was dead.

Paulo interrupts him and offers him the magazine, which was rolled up over something, saying, "Listen, hillbilly, if you want it that bad...take it." Paulo then starts to hand the rolled up magazine to Sawyer, who glances down and notices a roll of toilet paper on a stick that Paulo is holding in his other hand. Disgusted, Sawyer starts to walk away as he mumbles, "Just keep it." Paulo watches him and he strides back to his tent.

A short time later, Paulo is helping set up the ping pong table and makeshift netting. Sawyer walks up and asks, "Y'all looking for something like ...this?" Sawyer holds up a yellow ball similar in size to a ping pong ball. Reaching for the ball, Hurley says, "Cool! ... A ball!". Sawyer snatches the ball back and says he needs "a little quid pro quo first". Then, addressing everyone around the table, he explains that while he was gone everyone took his stuff and now he wants it back. Nikki interrupts him, blurting out, "Yeah, but it wasn't really yours to begin with." Sawyer briskly retorts, "A! .... It was mine when I took it! ... B!... Who the hell are you?!" At this question, Paulo looks up and stares oddly at Sawyer, who continues, " ...And C, because I'm fair ... I'm going to let you play me for it."

Paulo listens as Sawyer continues, "You bastards put up your best player. One game. And when I crush them...y'all gotta bring me every piece of my stash back." Then Hurley asks what happens if he (Sawyer) loses. Sawyer assures them he's not going to lose and they can name the stakes they're playing for against him. After briefly conferring with Jin, Sun names the stakes - no nicknames for anyone for a week! Paulo grins and watches as Sawyer agrees to the terms and tosses the ball onto the table saying, "Pick your player. I'll be back in an hour. Then, let the slaughter begin."

An hour later, Paulo stands with a small crowd gathered around the ping pong table to watch the match - Hurley vs Sawyer. Hurley asks if they are playing with the Mercy Rule? Sawyer is puzzled and asks what that means. Hurley explains if either one of them are up 11-0 then that person automatically wins. Sawyer, full of confidence, agrees to having the Mercy Rule. Hurley then asks, "You want to volley for serve?" Sawyer mockingly bows and replies as he tosses Hurley the ball, "I'll tell you what. Be my guest." Everyone starts clapping and cheering for Hurley as he gets ready to serve.

Hurley draws back, saying "Zero serving zero" then he serves a fast and low ball off to Sawyer's right. Sawyer lunges and manages to return the ball to Hurley's middle. Hurley backhands the ball and it speeds past Sawyer's left. The crowd erupts into clapping and cheering as Hurley scores the first point. Paulo, grinning widely, points with the rolled up magazine and says something to Nikki, who is standing next to him. Sawyer glances at Hurley suspiciously (thinking he was hustled) as he retrieves the ball. Hurley solemnly says, "One ... nothing."

(From Nikki's Flashback - 12 Hours Ago)

As a new day begins, Paulo walks along the beach to Nikki, who is sitting staring sadly out at the ocean. He sits down beside her and she asks quietly, "Did you know Thanksgiving was 2 weeks ago? We missed it Paulo...just like we're going to miss everything." Paulo reassures her, "They're going to find us. We'll get rescued. You'll see." Nikki laughs and asks, "Okay, where did this sudden burst of optimism come from?" Paulo shrugs and replies, " I don't know, I guess...it's how we look at things... like the bag. I mean ... maybe not finding it was good for us." Nikki asks softly, "How do you figure that?" Paulo replies, " Look what it did...might have torn us apart." Nikki nods her head and smiling, says softly, "Yeah." Then they look at each other and smile. Paulo tells Nikki, " Wait here. I'm gonna get us some breakfast." Paulo leans over and kisses her softly on the cheek. Then he gets up and walks away.

(From Nikki's Flashback - 8 Hours Ago)

Nikki and Paul are walking through the jungle. Paulo says to Nikki, "C'mon, you can just tell me." Nikki, leading the way, laughs and says, " Nuh uh, it's a surprise. We're almost there." After taking a few more steps, Nikki turns and smiling, asks, "Okay, ready?" Paulo replies, "Yeah." Nikki grins and says, "I found the diamonds, Paulo. " Stunned, Paulo asks, "What? ... Where?" Nikki (no longer smiling) says, "Right here." Paulo starts looking around on the ground. Nikki tells Paulo, "Give them to me!" Paulo, feigning innocence, asks, "What are you talking about?" Angry, Nikki says, "What am I talking about?" She reaches into her pocket and pulls out Paulo's nicotine gum and asks, "What's this?Your nicotine gum. You wanted to stop looking for the bag because you'd already found it. I know you have them, Paulo, so where are they?! " Paulo tells Nikki to calm down.

Nikki pulls out a jar and unscrews the lid. Alarmed, Paulo asks, "What the hell is that?" Nikki quickly throws the contents (a spider) in his face. The spider lands on his neck and bites him before Paulo can crush it with his hand. Seething with anger, he yells at Nikki, "Are you out of your mind?" Nikki says sarcastically, "You remember Dr. Arzt friend? Did it bite you?" Paulo looks at the crushed spider and spider juices on his hand. He shakes his hand, throwing the dead spider off to the ground. Nikki throws the jar away and asks Paulo, who is rubbing his neck, if it hurts.

Nikki takes a few steps closer to Paulo and says, "He told me why they call it the Medusa spider. Want to know why?" Paulo's hand starts to shake. He grabs Nikki and frantically asks, "What did you do?" He backs away and looks down at his arms that appear to be stiffening up. He drops his bag as Nikki continues explaining, "Because one look from Medusa would turn anyone to stone. Just like one bite from the spider will paralyze you." Paulo looks at Nikki in horror! She continues talking, "For ohhhh...about 8 hours. It won't kill you. It will just slow your heart rate down to the point that even a doctor would have a hard time..." Paulo falls to the ground! Nikki laughs and continues speaking, "....hearing it beat. You won't be able to move a muscle, so I'll be able to do all sorts of nasty things to you. And since it bit you on your neck, I'd say paralysis will happen fast."

Paulo begins to shake as Nikki squats down beside him. She says, "I'm guessing that you have the diamonds on you." She begins searching his body for the diamonds. She looks under his shirt, feels his pants legs and takes off one of his shoe. Not finding it in the shoe, she throws it toward the jungle, where it gets caught in a tree. Nikki stares down at Paulo and then grins, saying, "I think I know where..." She bends down and unfastens Paulo's belt. Paulo glances down as she unzips his pants. She reaches inside and finds the black pouch. As she pours the diamonds into her hand, Paulo says, "I'm sorry." Nikki replies, "You're only sorry because you got caught." Paulo, crying, says, " I was afraid of losing you. If you found the diamonds...you wouldn't need me anymore." Nikki looks at him sadly.

Just then the soft clicking/chirruping sound of the monster is heard in the background! Paulo grows alarms and tries to turn his head in that direction, but only manages to move his eyes. Paulo catches sight of a number of spiders resembling the one that bit him advancing from the jungle. He tries to warn Nikki by moving his eyes back and forth from the spiders to her. Paulo watches in horror as one of the spiders crawls up on Nikki's shoe and then her leg, biting her.

Later, Paulo lays immobile, and face up in the jungle. The light from the clear sky overhead is reflected in his unblinking eyes. Sawyer's voice can be heard as he draws closer to Paulo, "I'm telling you this is the trail." Hurley's voice breaks in, "What do you know about tracking?" Sawyer responds, "Well, I know what a footprint is." Jin calls out, "Over here." Their feet create a rustling sound as they walk over to where Paulo lays. Hurley exclaims softly, "Whoa!" Sawyer remarks, "I'm guessing that's Paulo."

Hurley stands near Paulo's head and remarks, "He's just like Nikki. No wound, no nothing." Jin squats close to Paulo's head and says something in Korean. Hurley replies, "Yeah, I know." Then Hurley asks, "Why are his pants undone? And why is his shoe in that tree?" Sawyer replies, "Maybe he stepped on something." Paulo's shoe arcs through the air over his head as Hurley reaches out and catches it. The zipper on Paulo's backpack cuts through the silence as someone opens it. Faint jungle animal sounds can be heard as Hurley asks, "You see something? Sawyer?" Sawyer replies, "Nothing."

Sawyer yells, "No!" Then Sawyer repeats softly, "No... don't." As gurgling water hits the ground, Hurley yells out, "Dude! What are you doing?" Sawyer replies, "Two people are dead. You ever think they might have been poisoned?" Hurley exclaims, "That's evidence! You're messing up the crime scene." Sawyer replies, "Crime scene? There a forensics hatch I don't know about?" Jin yells out, "Stop!" Then he utters one word, "Monster!"

Jin, Hurley and Sawyer, using a blanket as a stretcher, carry Paulo to the 815 survivor's cemetery and place him next to Nikki, who is already lying there on the ground.

Hurley: I'm with Jin, it's the monster.
Sawyer: Yeah, because that makes the most sense.
Hurley: It does. Locke said when Eko died his last words were, 'you're next'. And Nikki and Paulo were with them. He was talking about them.
Sawyer: He wasn't saying 'you're next' about them. He was saying 'you're next' as in...'you're ALL next'.
Hurley: Yeah, that's not...really better.
Sawyer: Alright, so here's how I see it. We want to know what happened, we gotta find out whatever we can about these jabonies.
Jin: Jabonies?
Sawyer: Nina and Pablo.
Hurley: Dude, show some respect. You know their names. It's Nikki and Paulo.
Sawyer: Whatever, Hugo. Where's their tent?
Sawyer: (walking away): And we'd better get some shovels.

Paulo's unblinking eyes stare up at the blue sky above as the sound of the waves breaking against the shore can be heard.

Paulo lays next to Nikki as Charlie, Sun, Jin, Hurley and Sawyer are gathered around them.

Hurley:Okay, so they had a walkie-talkie. You think they were working with the Others, like how?
Sawyer: Like Michael.
Charlie: If that's the case then why did they kill Nikki and Paulo?
Sawyer: Who knows why those people do anything. What matters is they could be out there right now waiting to get us.
Hurley: I don't know, dude. I was with the Others like, 2 weeks ago. They're on the total other side of the island.
Sun: Then who dragged me into the jungle? The Others came into our camp. They grabbed me, put a bag over my head, and if I hadn't gotten away they would've killed me.
Sawyer: Look, y'all stay here. Let me see if I can see any sign of them. I'll do a perimeter sweep.
Hurley: Where'd you get the gun?
Sawyer: Got it off one of them.
Hurley: And when were you going to let us know?
Sawyer: I guess right now.
Hurley: What exactly is a perimeter sweep?
Charlie: Shouldn't we cover them up?
Sun: Yes, of course.

Darkness falls over Paulo's face.

Later, a dog whines a couple of times and the darkness slides away from Paulo's face.

Hurley:(yelling): "Vincent! ... dude!"
Charlie: So he saw Sawyer and Nikki fighting. That doesn't prove anything.
Hurley: Look at the facts and ask yourself, 'Why is Sawyer so gung-ho about investigating this?' What's in it for him? He pretended he didn't know their names, but then he was fighting with Nikki.
Sun: Sawyer's not a murderer. He went all the way across the island to help Michael. It is the Others. I know what they can do.
Hurley: Okay, you know what? I'll go get Desmond. He'll tell you exactly what he saw.
Charlie: Sun? It was me.
Sun:What?
Charlie: It was me who took you, not the Others. I wasn't myself...after Locke hit me...after he humiliated me. Sawyer told me I could get even by helping him steel the guns. We just made it...look like the Others. I didn't mean to hurt you.

Later, Paulo's face is shielded from the sun by the shade of a tree. The sound of the waves breaking against the shore can be heard. The sound of metal slicing into the sand drifts across the ground.

Hurley:Give me the gun.
Sawyer: Hell you talking about.
Hurley: Give it to me.
Sawyer: It ain't even loaded.
Hurley: Then how are you sweeping the perimeter? Quit lying, dude. Desmond saw you fighting with Nikki this morning.
Sawyer: Oh, I see what this is. Villagers have got themselves some torches.
Hurley: Did you kill them?
Sawyer: No! No I didn't kill them. Yeah, me and Nikki went at it this morning. Cause she wanted a gun.
Hurley: Why didn't you tell us this before?
Sawyer: Cause the dirt under her nails.
Hurley: What?
Sawyer: She was digging. And when we found him I saw a fresh mound of dirt. She was burying something. And if you take the time to dig a hole right before you die, then what you're hiding's probably pretty damn good.
Sun: So what was it? What did she hide?
Sawyer: Go ahead, take 'em. Cause whatever happened to those two, I had nothing to do with it.

Later, while the ocean laps against the shore, Sawyer whispers, "Thanks for nothin." Then the sound of a single shovel moving sand is heard.

Sun: Charlie told me it was your idea .... to kidnap me.
Sawyer sighs deeply and the shoveling sound stops.
Sawyer: You going to tell Jin?
Sun: No.
Sawyer: Why not?
Sun: Because then, we would have to dig another grave.
Sawyer: Why are you giving me these?
Sun: Because they're worthless here.
Sawyer: See ... I thought I was going to get out of this without a le...
A loud smacking noise is heard.

Later

Hurley: Nikki and Paulo. I guess we really didn't know you very well. And it appears you killed each other for diamonds. But I know there are good parts to you too. You were always nice to me. And you were a member of the camp. And...I really loved Exposé. Okay, then. Goodbye.

A shoveling sound is heard.

Sawyer: Wait!
Sawyer: Rest in peace, Nikki and Paulo.

Shoveling sounds of metal and sand fill the silence.
