Brad Loves Lost

First off, this is my virgin post on this site and just wanted to say I'm so happy to find other Lost addicts!
Ok, onto my theory.
I rewatched the first five episodes over the weekend, and it struck me that the large 'monster' could be either an elephant or a wooly mammoth. I'm leaning toward the mammoth because of the appearance of the polar bear and because a large elephant could have grabbed the pilot out of the cockpit's window and then tossed him into the trees.
This could also explain why the pilot wasn't eaten, merely crushed and discarded in the branches. The large size of a Mammoth could also explain why the trees are being moved/knocked down as the monster moves around. As for Locke not being attacked by the monster, my only conclusion is that whatever the monster is, it didn't consider him a threat at the time. Since there are multiple boars on the island, there could be multiple 'monsters' as well. Maybe he ran into a different less aggressive one on the hunt. Also Rose says that the monster sounds familiar and when asked she says she lives in the Bronx. Bronx zoo has elephants.
We have been told there are no dinosaurs on the island, and technically speaking a Wooly Mammoth/Elephant is a mammal. If this island is a sort of 'land that time forgot' it could be possible that there are some species thought to be extinct or never discovered before.
So that's my theory! Now off to read more posts on this board!
