At the end of the episode when Sawyer placed his bet and Kate "took the action", Jack looked at the two of them and his expression said it all. He sees that she is attracted to Sawyer. Mathew Fox did a great job of acting with just a look. It conveyed understanding and pain.

At this point the writers are clearly suggesting a Kate/Sawyer relationship; "as one outcast to another." Kate may be the life preserver which brings Sawyer back to the land of the living and rescues him from the self-loathing and near suicide mindframe which the last episode strongly suggested he was in. It also looks like Jack will let her go as he has been portrayed as having a strong inner foundation of strength even if he has some self doubts.

Personally, I like Jack's character as it has been shown so far. He has a quiet strength and a depth to him; as Rose said "a good soul." I know some on this site have lambasted him for the torture incident last week but I see it differently. From his perspective and all the evidence as it existed and even from Sawyer's actions, Jack and Sayid did the right thing. They took forceful action to save a girl's life from someone (Sawyer) who clearly represented himself as a man who had either reckless disregard for Shannon's life or the clear intent to cause her pain and profit from it. It turns out that Sawyer is not a monster, but 3/4 of the way into last weeks episode that was still open for debate.

Jack is a good man and I'd like him to end up with Kate. But I don't think that's in the cards. I feel his character is in for a lot more turbulence and he will be the center of much of what happens on the island especially if one of the island's mysteries is a deadly virus. There is also something fatalistic about him. I sense that events will prevent the romance with Kate from developing.

A lot of us see impediments to Jack and Kate's relationship - the primary one is that they could possibly be happy. We certainly can't have that.

I keep getting this feeling that whoever ends up with Kate will regret it. I can't get out of my head how freaked out that marshall/bounty hunter was when he learned Kate was loose. "she's dangerous.....don't let he get to you" etc. The writers are making Kate out to be a prize to be fought over. I think she may be someone to ultimately be afraid of. Be careful what you wish for boys.

Jack was definitely upset about it. But I think if we must have a triangle going, I'd rather K&S be the obvious couple and K&J be the tortured.
