Finally broked down and bought the DVD's.
The fourth episode with HELEN clearly implies that they messed up. Having Helen in season 2 and a different arch and charactre makes it quite lame.
Unless this is some doppleganger stuff...
andrewwolfson ,
There aren't any spoilers here. I'm going to move this to the Redshirts forum where the other Helen discussions are taking place. Please continue there. Thanks.

Here's my take:
In the "present" when Locke is talking to Helen - he is indeed talking to a phone sex girl that he has decided to call "Helen" and the woman went along with it, much in the same way women pretend to be cheerleaders, nurses, etc.
In the flashback, we meet the real Helen, the woman Locke was apparently in love with. What happens to the real Helen is still a mystery. But it's apparent to me that Locke loves her enough that in the "present" he is unable to let her go and the only contact he is able to have with a woman includes pretending she is Helen.

Seems actually quite organized to me. First, Locke is in love with the real Helen. Later (during time we haven't seend), Locke and Helen part ways. Then, Locke, desperate for love, calls his telephone hotline girl, and simply says, "Hey, I'm paying you $89.95 an hour. Mind if I call you Helen?" so that he can pretend that she's the girl he used to love.
Random other thought: Can something be "clearly implied"? Seems like an oxymoron... :p

Although I've never called a phone-sex girl, I'm told that's how they work.* I hope they bought it!*
