Makenzie Astin -Tom

I thought that since he was Kate's friend, I'd put it in Kate's thread. Does anyone know how Mackenzie got the part of Tom? I would love to know because I love Mackenzie Astin.
Although, I have a guess. Dom Monaghan worked with and was friends with Sean Astin (Mackenzie's brother). (edited as it's gossip) So, what I thought, was maybe Mackenzie was looking to get into acting again and was having some trouble, told Dom, and Dom put in a good word for Mackenzie on LOST. How close am I? Does anyone know how he got the part? :\
