View Full Version : Jacob?

Since my other thread asking about a screen cap was locked, I wanted to continue the second half of my post here. ( my apologies for the stream of consciousness to come, but i have to get my thoughts out)
Jacob has become mentioned much more recently, especially in the Room 23 video. Just so happened to coincide with the appearance of Juliet's sister Rachel in a flashback.
It's getting interesting now knowing that Juliet's sister's name is Rachel. Jacob's (biblical) second wife was named Rachel & was the mother of Benjamin (& Joseph). She was infertile and it was thought that God allowed her to bear them.
If what was in the vial impregnated her, perhaps it is "Jacob" or related to "him"? Jacob doesn't necessarily have to be a person.(I know the age gap between Juliet's sister and Ben makes this connection implausible, but the island can make the implausible very likely).
Jacob + Rachel -> Ben?

Thats an interesting theory. You are saying that Ben is the child of Juliet's sister and this unknown Jacob.
Quick question, did Ben ever tell us how old he is? I feel like he did in the beginning of the season when he told Jack "My name is Benjamin Linus, and Ive lived on this island my whole life." Did he? Because if he didnt, your theory is capable of holding some water. We know that the Island is somehow affected by unusual Time. We dont know how or why, but it seems plausible that, with all the other weird stuff thats happened related to time, that Ben was born only 3 years ago (the time when Juliet came to the island, with Rachel if this theory were true.) Rachel gave birth to Ben on the island roughly 3 years ago.
Then, whatever way that time is unique on the island caused Ben to age incredibly quickly, becoming the man we know and love now. This rapid aging of Ben would also help TPTB explain Walt's incredibly aging, which they promised an explanation to), as perhaps Walt was subjected to the same experiments that were conducted on Ben when he was first born. The reason he has apparently stopped aging (which maybe he hasnt) could be due to the Failsafe being used by Desmond, because the "magic" of the island is necessary for the aging to continue, and the hatch implosion ended it.

I am very much on the same page as you, thats how I came to this line thought.
I can only remember Ben stating that he lived on the island his whole life, no specific age. Also, Walt did age quickly, but was this intended as part of the story or just a result of how much time passes during the filming of shows, especially for multiple seasons.
Maybe its not rapid aging, but rapid/efficient growth & development. Once puberty ends so does development & growth for the most part. So once you are an adult maybe aging slows again, but cell growth could still be rapid. That could be why healing and hair growth continues at a fast pace. Rapid/Efficient development would make children incredibly effective "sponges".

Didn't Jack, upon seeing those x-rays, estimate the patient to be around 40ish? Then, he assumed they belonged to Ben.

If we assume that Ben is Alex's father (biological or adoptive), it doesn't make sense that he has only been around for 3 years. He would have been born when she was 13, and rapid aging or not, it seems unlikely that he would have then stepped into a paternal role with her.
I do think the biblical names are significant. Biblical and religious references have been important through the whole show. I immediately made the connection between Benjamin and Jacob when Danny mentioned Jacob's list, but I hadn't caught Rachel. Good ear. Remember also that in the bible, Benjamin was falsely accused of stealing. He looked like a bad guy but ended up being innocent. Hmmmm....

Yes this is correct. That's why Jack believes he has been captured in the first place, to work on Ben's cancer.

Great point, and it shows how Ben is being perceived by the audience. Is he good, is he bad?
Ben can lie his way into the LOSTies camp, manipulate people to do his bidding, and kidnap people that he sees work into his grand scheme. At the same time, he feels compelled to treat Kate with new clothes and a scrumptious meal, and treat Jack like a "gentleman" with handshakes, promises of returning home, and calling Jack a gentleman - "From one gentleman to another".

Based on x-rays, Juliet also thought she was looking at the womb of a 70-year old woman. Parallel?

This would be so cool if Ben was Juliets Sisters baby! I'd love that, maybe this is why we never see kids on the Island cos they all grow old so quickly. Apart from Claires baby...

Just to keep this theory alive (Just know I dont actually think this, but its definitely interesting and worth talking about) it is very possible that Henry could have come into Alex's life within the last year or so. Alex grows up her whole life with the Others, probably with Tom and Bea, all the time not knowing who her parents were or how she got there. Then, once Henry becomes the leader of the Others, he "adopts" here, meaning that they lie and tell her that he is her father, and always has been.
I dont know, though. Henry's X-Rays making Jack believe that he is 40 is also not concrete enough to go against this theory. Just because Henry has only been alive for 3 years, his body has aged 40 years in that time. Therefore, he would exhibit all of the physical signs of a normal 40 year old man.
Despite the obvious flaws in this theory, I do really believe that Henry has in fact lived his whole life on the island, and is incapable of leaving it. I also believe this ties in with whatever strange time-warps or fluctuations that exist on the island.

Why the capitalisation with 'He'?? You don't normally do that if you write 'he', so is 'He' a name or something?

'He' is God, hence the capitals!
I wonder if the fact that the words are shown on steps has any meaning?

Well, in the bible there'd be the relation with Jacob and Jacob's ladder...

I haven't seen this mentioned anywhere else, and it seems appropriate as we try to figure out what Jacob is

Why does it say "loved", as in past tense?

Sorry this brings a song to my head:
Oh no! Not he! How you accuse him is a mystery. Save him! Take me! Benjamin is straighter than a tall palm tree...
Ahh! Good ol' musical theatre finds it's way into another post! :) I <3 how my craft finds it's way...
My question is, regardless if Ben is crazy or not, Did anybody noticed that while Locke and Ben were in the room with Jacob, there was any actual frame that you can see Jacob. It is in the middle of the caos - on my computer the frame timestamp was 31:54.
