View Full Version : Do the redshirts ever have adventures?

Apologies to mods and members if this is redundant or posted in the wrong forum; I can only scan posts as long as the kids are napping so just steer me in the right direction if it's somewhere else (except Spoilers).
So...from a technical standpoint it only makes sense for the main 14, er 13 (sorry Boone) characters to be the ones exploring and getting into jams. That's already a lot of people for whom to write.
But realistically (and yes I know this isn't real), can't we assume that the other survivors (that is, the ones we SEE, not the ones talking to Boone on the crashed heroin plane) are off having adventures once in awhile? We don't hear about their discoveries and brushes with death because...well, hardly any of the main characters ever talk about their escapades with the whole gang either...and because the redshirts don't have speaking parts...and maybe the 13 are the Alpha survivors and the other survivors aren't so daring so they wouldn't be having adventures anyway.
But out of all those people on the island, I would think more of them might have seen polar bears, heard the monster, run into Danielle, found pieces of the plane, seen the cable, seen the eye of the island, whatever.
Or are we to believe there is an unwritten chain of command whereby only Jack-Kate-Sawyer-Locke-(Boone)-Sayid are allowed to go traipsing around? (of course Locke and Boone were traipsing under the pretense of hunting)
I acknowledge that we know Ethan went hunting with Locke, but he turned out *not* to be a redshirt. And we don't know what Scott was doing on the beach (he might have been exploring, or he might have been a cave dweller that got dragged to the beach).
This bugs me far more than the "writers-should-address-the-hygiene" issue.

Yeah, the extras have adventures like..
Trying to get the autograph of the real actors for their kids
Quibbling with the production company about their meager pay
Standing in the hot sun for hours and trying not to go mad while Terry O'whatshisname gets a shine on his head from the makesup crew.
Things like that.

I have been wondering exactly the same thing. I meant to make a post about it a while ago and then didn't.
I wonder what they might have been been discovering. Would it be usefull to "our" group. I am really surprized that none of them have found Locks hatch. Or maybe one has, who knows.

Well, if the diarist represents a redshirt, then yeah.. she has heard the whispers, seen the hatch, seen a "whale", found a dead body, seen a figure dissapear in the distance, etc.
But, mostly they play golf.

Damon Lindelof said in our exclusive interview with him that we WILL find out before the season is over what the "redshirts" have been keeping themselves busy with all these weeks (island time).

Well Chinamom, I'm sure you realize this is a rhetorical question? I guess we could assume the other 30 or so survivors are off having their own adventures, but we'll never know. As you mention yourself, we're only shown the major characters island experiences.
Now according to Damon Lindelof's interview with our own Suil Liath, some of the Redshirts may be brought into the foreground during season 2.

A redshirt was responsible for Claire's escape... RS figured that Jack and crew were too incompetent at tracking down Ethan and took it upon itself to free her...

Do you have a link to the diarist?
Heard her mentioned but not sure where to find her...

There's a thread dedicated to the Diary at the top of this forum. (http://p073.ezboard.com/flosttheunofficalforumfortheabcseriesfrm2.showMess ageRange?topicID=314.topic&start=1&stop=50)

Right, I'm so used to seeing it that I have filtered it out. Hopefully that is the dumbest thing I do all day. :)

We also don't know if the redshirts interact with the characters we know.
The diarist mentioned something about a certain person from Louisiana and I thought she might have interacted with Sawyer.

Sure we do, we see them talking together in the background all the time. Sometimes in the foreground, like Scott, Steve the guy with the leg... wasn't there a sunburnt guy that talked to Jack, etc.

OK, I think this thread has received enough attention here in General. I'm going to move this to the Redshirts forum now, where it really belongs.

I think the creators are going to use the redshirts strategically. If they need a new character to be introduced, it's a perfect explanation that the new person was just one of the nameless survivors.

Thanks for your thoughts! The serious ones *and* the entertaining ones :)
Hodge, yes, it's a very rhetorical question :) I read Damon's interview but it didn't completely explain things (guess I should have expected as much).
Sounds like the redshirts will definitely have a purpose at some point. Otherwise, why are they even on the island?! Just background scenery most of the time.

I agree with LraNCrg. Also, hence the name "Redshirt" for those times the writers need to kill off a non-essential person.
Their adventures probably involve finding another colored shirt.

There's a rather entertaining thread in the General Discussions forum named Is there any skill an extra could bring? (http://p073.ezboard.com/flosttheunofficalforumfortheabcseriesfrm2.showMess age?topicID=2371.topic) which discusses bringing forth redshirts as main characters in the future.

Aloha from the Pacific,
The other survivors aka redshirts. Since I am one of the survivors that has been on this island since the crash I must say it has been interesting. At times I find myself endlessly carrying firewood, going through suit cases, and weaving baskets, yet others watching fights, seeing death, watching a birth, being called into a group meeting of all the survivors, and much more yet am unable to say as these episodes have yet to air. As I was not given a backstory, since I am not a lead character, I wrote my own as to have a purpose for being on that plane and on this island.
I am aware of how lucky I am as an actor to be on this show. Keep in mind that some of our main cast worked as background actors for years before they found themselves with a speaking role. Some people enjoying being in the background, I feel like it is an important learning experience, but have been formally training as an actor, obtaining all I can on the set of Lost,
and working on other projects to keep moving up the latter.
Lastly, don't be fooled we make great money, eat wonderful food, work on a beach all day in Hawaii, and have an amazing friendly cast... no bad, not bad at all!
Take care all, faithfay/SBSSG
The USAWeekend segment on Lost seems to verify that others will be coming to the forefront. Is it just me or does that sound like it'd be really difficult to do in a way that's satisfying to Lost fans? I can see Rose coming up, since we have had some intro to her story, but someone just popping up out of nowhere? I'm a bit wary of this...

Remember, earlier this season we met Steve and Scott. But it seems they were introduced to get one of them killed. I'm still trying to figure out which one is left. But maybe I'll call him Sceve, like everybody else. We've also met "rash" guy. Who happens to be a fine character actor. I'm sure we've all recognized some of his work. I'm thinking he wasn't given those few lines for nothing. Maybe next season we'll learn his purpose.
I believe they called the rash guy Sullivan.

Does anyone know if there is a fanfic site devoted to LOST?
I noticed there is a small forum area on the board for it but fanfic can sometimes get big enough to be it's own site.
If I can't find one, I might just have to create one. :)
Any thoughts?

ShooBaDoop,
You may want to check some of the postings in the Fan Fiction areas as I'm positive others have had this idea before -you may like more than one link!
There may be something too in the Lostaways Community Area - check it out!
