How many extras are there suppose to be?

Has anyone counted the background actors for each episode? It seems odd that they continue to blur them out of the scene's. In a real plane crash with 48 survivors you think there would be more passengers coming forward. It's only natural for this to happen. I'm getting a little claustrophobic with all these close up shots. The show is beginning to feel more like a soap rather then a thrilling, realistic series that captures the viewers imagination. Does anyone share these same feelings.

In the SciFi Channel magazine, JJ Abrams said the writers refer to the extras as "meat socks" or "socks" for short. He also said that the show would focus on 11 main characters, but that if/when a main character gets killed off, they would bring forward one of the "socks" to be one of the 11.
