Clarifying Desmond's Story

I'm a little confused with the details of Desmond's backstory. "Flashes Before Your Eyes" showed us his first interaction with Poppa Widmore which Desmond says he remembered afterwards (therefore I assume that it actually happened). Then Desmond breaks up with Penny because he isn't good enough for her. "Live Together, Die Alone" showed us Desmond leaving prison and Mr. Widmore is waiting outside. He shows a huge stack of letters that Desmond had sent to Penny while in jail. Then later when Desmond is running up and down the steps to train, Penny comes and asks Des why he didn't write her. Am I the only one who senses a disconnect here? Desmond leaves her, but then he continues writing to her and she continues to love him. Did they get back together at some point? Why would Penny be expecting his letters if they had broken up? It doesn't make sense. Someone help me out.

My thought here was that the first time (not in his trippy flashback, the first time when he didn't take the ring in the jewelry store), he didn't officially break up with Penelope, only ran to the army to try to prove to Mr. Widmore he wasn't a coward. I don't think he actually broke up with her there, only in the trippy flashback.

But I for one don't trust the flashback to be the truth, only a guide to what mostly happened with major differences (Such as Crazy Old Irish Lady).

I like your idea Aggiesean! It makes sense with what we know from Live Together, Die Alone. When Penny tracks him down at the stadium, she asks whether he read that book. Which implies they were in touch with one another prior to his incarceration. She also asks why he didn't write. And we all know that answer. Daddy Widmore!

Do we have any idea why he was in prison? And when he met Jack he said he was almost a doctor. Does this mean he was in medical school?
