Ok...we know that Desmond talked to Penny's father and there was a discussion about coming to work for him...
We see a scene where Desmond says he doesn't want to work for him etc etc...and that he wants to marry his daughter...
MUCH like Jin and Sun...and Sun's father...who in return asks Jin to work for him.... (a very similar situation...a rich daughter and less successful boyfriend...)
SO, long story short, my question is.....WHAT if Desmond IS working for Widmore....what if Desmond IS on the island for a reason and there is more to the story than what there appears to be...
What if within all this doing and undoing of his life...he IS working for Widmore...and that's why he is there
Any thoughts?

I don't think so. We've seen Desmond tortured enough when he is by himself over his memories of Penny, and wanting to return to civilization so badly that he almost kills himself. If he is working for Widmore, wouldn't he just give up and go home?

Maybe if he doesn't do his job, he doesn't get the girl?

Maybe if he doesn't do his job, he doesn't get the girl?In Des's flashback, he could have had Penny (the girl) whether he worked for Widmore or not. It didn't matter to her that he was poor and jobless. She loved him, and was rich, and she was willing to foot the bills.

Yes Loster, it's true he has Penny, but not by the time he was training for his race around the world. He loses her and ends up on a sailboat trying to impress her father (even before he turns the failsafe key and we see him ruin things with her on purpose). In any case, I don't think Des will really turn out to be working for Widmore, it was just a suggestion.

Anything is possible wit LOST.
And I don't know what this means, but lets not forget that she tracked him down in LA and said when he was running in the stadium with Jack. I guess that says to me, she wasn't over him. But he rejected her again, although he did concede his life was still about her by saying he was doing the race.

Penny may only have money due to her father, Charles Widmore, and his advancements in life. If Widmore doesn't want Penelope to marry Des and she tries to go through with it, Widmore could bring the axe and cut her off of her funds. Now Penny may not really care about the money and really truely love Des, which I don't doubt. We haven't seen much of Penelope to make that kind of judgement. We do know, however, that she has used her money to track down Des (L.A. stadium) and she doesn't care what her father has to say about the situation (was upset that Des didn't write to her while in jail and Des knew about Pen getting married - Widmore did both these acts).
But Desmond was being a gentleman about the whole marriage thing. Ask for Pen's hand in marriage from her father. Get a decent job so they can live comfortably together. She was willing to use her money for the both of them.
In the LOST world, anything is possible. Desmond could be working for Widmore, but in my humble opinion, I seriously doubt it. For one, he wanted to regain his honor by competing in the around the world race. That takes courage, strength, and balls to perform such a task....alone. Two, we haven't seen any other people performing this task. How come there aren't more competitors following Desmond or ahead of Desmond in this race that are now on the island? Desmond obviously got lost (no pun intended. Well, maybe!). That to me smacks of conspiracy against Desmond. Could be Widmore's doing, who knows. And lastly, Desmond isn't the corporate kind. Just take a look at him. Scruffy beard, longer hair, does his own thing. I have a hard time thinking he would mesh with the corporate world, which again in my opinion is a good thing. Widmore seems to be the kind of person who doesn't even know what a five day shadow looks like.
If anything, Widmore is in control of Desmond to make sure he doesn't get involved with Pen, and that Pen eventually marries this other guy. And if Desmond has anything to say differently, he is going to find a way to prevent that from happening.
Just my 2 cents this morning.
