Basically, we can't trust a word he says...
He says the sub is the only way of the island, but what about the sail boat they stole from Sayid, Jin and Sun?
It's certainly sea worthy, Desmond sailed half the pacific ocean with it.
He says that communications are down and that the anomoly (purple sky etc) caused the sonar to no longer work... but, what happened when the sky turned purple previously? When the plane crashed down and when they had the 'incident'? (and don't they say: not again...? when the plane crashes down? And they don't freak out like the losties do later at the dock. It certainly seems like they are used to it) So what is with this nonsense? It didn't destroy communications or sonar before, so why now? Could it be repaired previously? Why not now?
He says to Jack: "I'll let your friends go as soon as you are off this island" knowing that Locke is blowing up the sub, so Jack won't get of the island.
He is full of baloney.

He is definately full of it.
I don't buy into the fact that the sub is the only way onto or off of the island.
I'm also not convinced that the sonar has been inoperable since the sky turned purple. If this is true then they would have had to abducted Cooper prior to the hatch implosion.

Ben's been full of it since we first saw him. He lies, he deceives, he manipulates. I'm sure there's another way off the island. Besides, if no one can communicate with the island, how are they getting food?

I think the story Ben is selling is that since the purple sky, their comms to the outside world are down (so they can't request food drops, background checks, etc) and the sonar no longer sends out the signal that's the only way to find the island--you have to home in on it, you can't just go to a coordinate. So you could leave, but you could never get back.
As to whether I trust him on this...
His story to the others has been that they can leave at any time, they just don't want to. Evidently it's been very hard to convince Juliet she doesn't want to. I don't think any do ever leave the island; I'm not clear as to whether a select few (Alpert?) can leave and return on recruiting missions--can the sub go out on autopilot?
I'm pretty sure that's the case... except when desmond did it, the sky probably didn't go purple. (we would have seen it from the plane) so their communications almost went down
about the boat... perhaps the sub is the only thing that can locate the island now that the communications are down. I'm thinking that sonar is the only thing that can find the island. the boat can flee but can't get back without sailing aimlessly (and with a strange bearing because of the magnetics)

Hmm, there's a thread about Ben's chicken and one about his baloney.
Waits for vonnegut to start a thread about Ben's salami...

I think Ben's character is turning out to be one of the best written. I honestly couldn't decide if at the end of the episode he really wanted the submarine blown up or not. If he wanted it blown up why did he even mention to Locke that once the sub left there was no chance of a return. While his character is always manipulating things, he also seems capable of taking events that don't work out in stride and even claiming that that is the way he always intended it.

I'm still remembering (sorta) the time when Desmond showed back up on the island (drunk) and he said something about he left the island but just sailed in circles around it.... Something like that...
Is that why "boats" won't work to get them off the island?
Immediately I thought about the whole "magnetic" idea and what not.
Anybody else remember that?

I think the boat didn't work because his compass might be messed up. It might have gotten damaged when he crashed or it might be messed up by the great magnetic pull the island has. Either way, i don't buy this:'you will not be able to find the island when teh sonar is down' balony...

Totally agree! He's a jerk, but i love watching him because he is such an interesting character, you never know what he's up to.

Yeah,
Here's the transcript:
JACK: So, before you ran off, I guess you just forgot to mention that you still have a sailboat. Why'd you come back?
DESMOND [laughing]: Do you think I did it on purpose? I was sailing for two and half weeks, bearing due West and making 9 knots. I should have been in Fiji in less than a week. But the first piece of land I saw wasn't Fiji, was it? No. No, it was here -- this, this island. And you know why? Because this is it. This is all there is left. This ocean and this place here. We are stuck in a bloody snow globe. There's no outside world. There's no escape. So, just go away, huh. Let me drink.
Juliet mentioned it too when Colleen mentioned they have a boat.
COLLEEN: Brian followed him back to the shore and they have a sailboat.
BEN: How?!
COLLEEN: I have no idea.
JULIET: So they have a boat -- sailing in circles will keep them busy.
COLLEEN: They could find us. [long pause] Ben?
BEN: I'm thinking. How quickly can you put together a team?
COLLEEN: Within the hour.
BEN: Then don't waste time talking to us. [Colleen starts to exit] Hey Colleen, I want that boat.
Thanks Spooky!!
Why, if the problem is with the magnetic problem, don't they navigate the old fashioned way - stars and sun?

how sincere or honest does ben sound when he says this?
(not word for word)
Locke: so where do you get power for this place?
Ben: We have 2 giant hamsters running on wheel underground
knowing Ben, he could be telling the truth but you never know. so how sincere or honest could ben really be when he says this

Of course he's full of it. If you could never make it to the island, the plane would've never crashed there in the first place.

Another point to add... perhaps boats cant get off the island because they use the good-old compass which are affected by the magnetic properties of the island. Planes use much more sophisticated systems and fly much faster so it wouldnt take you two weeks to figure out youre going the wrong way.
