When Desmond explained to his ex-girlfriend why he ran our on her, he said that after a night of drinking he woke up in the street but didn't know how he got there. Was that because he warped back in time but didn't know it? It seems strange that the first person he meets is the monk that's in the picture with Mrs. Hawkins, who he meets in another warp. Also, when Desmond meets Jack in the stadium, he knew the surgery would go well, and as he left he said to Jack "see you in another life, brother".
I think Desmond may have warped several times.

I can't remember the story leading up to finding himself in the middle of the street, but I assumed that's what happened too. He'd made a loop back through time.

I think he said he was scared about getting married, had a "few pints" at the pub, and woke up in the middle of the street. I guess it's possible that it had to do with time loops, but I'm thinking more like he passed out from the alcohol--probably had an alcoholic blackout and didn't remember anything.

You'd think if he's on a continual loop, he would've recognize Penny like he recognized Charlie.

Why is this even a valid thread? Of course he just drank too much. Wow. Guys.... wow.

You could argue he did recognize her. Was his reaction to her face deja vu or "hey, you're kinda hot" ?

This time travel thing is a mess, and I don't discount this theory simply because, as has been discussed, the whole "I got drunk" scenario is too similar. He doesn't know how he got there?

Whether he is looping or not, I think the ambiguity in the script was intentional.

dude ... most everyone I know has been drunk enough at least one time in their life to have 'blacked out' ... I can totally understand how a down on his luck Scottsman could dive into the bottle a wee bit hard, and lose track of what happened between Point A and Point B ...

What's significant is that he came-to from his drunken stupor, and the first thing that happened to him was that he encountered the monk who took him back to the church with him ...

I'm with the he got wasted, blacked out and passed out in the street. Let's not make everything so complicated.
