It seems like the test of Locke went much further than what to do with his father. The Others community seems to parallel the commune in which Locke lived in "Further Instructions". He was devastated that his trusting nature allowed him to be manipulated by the members of the commune. Now it appears that he is allowing the same thing by Ben and Richard Alpert. He is making all the same mistakes again.
Unless he is becoming the manipulator, as he was with Sawyer. Either way, doesn't seem like much of an enlightenment.
