Ok, I'm not sure if anyone has thought of this as of yet. Everyone keeps wondering WHO Jacob is, but I'm really thinking that is where we are all making a mistake.
What if Jacob isn't a person at all. Two things came to me. The first is what if Jacob is really like my title.... J.A.C.O.B and it stands for something.
Now I've tried figuring out what that could stand for and to be honest I haven't the slightest idea.
I then thought well maybe it doesn't stand for anything, but maybe it is the name that was given to an ultra sophisticated computer or program.
I really don't think Jacob is a person though. And are we even sure it spelled jacob? I dunno, maybe I'm way off, but I think this idea is just something LOST would pull.
Any thoughts??????

I never thought of that. That's a good idea. I bet the J stands for Jack. I'm not sure what the rest stands for though.

Yes, welcome Lost420. I, too, have thought that Jacob stood for something other than a person, like the computer HAL in 2001 A Space Odessy. I kinda gave up on that because I thought the "C" stood for Cooper and now he's dead. What I'm thinking now is alternate spellings. Maybe it's not someone's first name but a combination of names that slurred together over the years and is now pronounced as "Jacob." A variation could have been Jay Cob or J. Cobb, someone's first and last name. Just a thought.

It's a good idea, but there are too many references to "him", both by the Others and by TPTB in various interviews, including a recent one where they say He is as important to the show as the Emperor was to Star Wars.
I guess I'm one of a few? who believe Jacob to be a person.
With this comparison, it could be likely, as has been theorized by other members, that Ben has split personalities like Palpatine.

seems i am leaning towards a person but as this Jacob is as important as the emp in star wars. the sith lord was hiding in plain sight all along as the good guy. so jacob being ben is inline with what the producers are saying as it a him. i mean jacob could be something as simple as

A friend of mine's mom is in town and she's got this "Philosophy for Dummies" book and it has references to all kinds of stuff... maybe Jacob has something to do with that...

If you have more important things to do, then do them. It`s just inconsiderate to not even check to see if something has been posted. Do you think your better then everyone else? "I have more important things to do". What, do you have a button you need to push every 108 minutes?
I check before I post something, it does`nt take long and you will probably find something that you`ll really like. It`s pretty cool actually when you see that other people think the same way you do.

With the next episode being "The Man Behind the Curtain" isn't is possible that Jacob isn't real? That perhaps he is a "projection" from Ben so that the others still have fear. I'm just wondering because it seems to allude to The Wizard of Oz, or someone hiding, and thus far Jacob seems to be the most elusive character. Only talked about, never seen. I mean, if you look at Ben as a person he's a little weak as a person. I mean, he's having to basically kidnap people and brainwash them to bring them to the island and keep them under "control." It's natural he would "create" this personality to keep the others in check.

Maybe Ben has weird powers that enable him to move things around (hence making it look like he was being thrown around and everything was being dashed) and maybe Ben is half computer half human, andhe can't get in touch with his computer self, that's why he's all saddo, and that's why he needed to hear what jacob said "help me:"(to get in touch with his computer self) and that's why jacob sounded like a computer :s...ben's inner self. arhj aghr aghr. my mind eez an oosin volcano now.

First I think that Jacob is a person or sprit whatever because they showed him sitting in the chair. but why ask Locke to help him if Ben is under Jacob? BUT when Ben shook the chair he said to Jacob "ok that's enuff you had your fun" as if Jacob was not his boss "persay" if you noticed Ben kept sayin Sir before the flashlight incident.

Man, i thought the whole Jacob scenario was super lame. And now we still don't know who or what he is. There are about a million possibilities:
- a ghost
- a ghost pirate
- a ghost dharma person
- a ghost hostile
- the invisible man
- a vampire (they don't like the light)
- someone who can travel out of body
- ben's imaginary friend (ben is telekinetic and smashed stuff)
- someone caught in two planes of existence
- smokey
- a person out of phase with time due to electromagnetic aberrations since the hatch imploded (think Manhattan Project)
- a shapeshifter or skinwalker (who can also turn invisible)
- Harvey
- a hoax by ben
- an alien
- a former dharma experiment in life extension (who is also invisible)
- a genie (stole this idea from a newbie poster)
I would have been really happy with:
- Ben
- Alpert
- Christian
- Someone else we've never met
This was the first episode ever that i've really disliked.

You really got me with that one. I`m crushed. You can try to insult me all you want.
Just try to be considerate and take two minutes to search. Chances are you`ll find a thread already started on your subject. If there is an honest effort and nothing is found fine, post all you want. I know it`s hard to find what your looking for sometimes because of the way things are titled. But the attitude of having more important things to do, comes across as though your above the procedures we follow.
I`m a single dad who works fulltime and if I can take the time to search so can you.
What could Jacob be an acronym for? I'll start.

The screencap, It's Lock. By the way: In the Bible; Sons of Jacob are Benjamen and Joseph. Benjamen kills his brother Joesph (Lock?) and leaves him in the ditch for dead. But he doesn't die. He becomes "king" of Egypt. Maybe lock hears Jacob because he is Ben's brother. Maybe Lock resembles Jacob because he is his son. Or even himself in the future. Benjamen said that Jacob didn't like techology either. I think that there are a lot of strange time loops running and rerunning all over the island.
