locke wrote about social compacts.

hobbes and bacon were precursors to locke's treatises.

hobbes is known for stating that life, prior to the social contract, was "solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short"

hobbes is also known for the 'organic metaphor' in describing the 'body politik' in "Leviathan".

there is a gourmet pork product called "Hobbs Bacon"

Locke killed a boar. All ate the boar. An organic boar. Organic Hobbs bacon.

you see where i'm going, right?

I agree -- the show reminds me of "Grendel" which its thirteen chapters represented the 13 major Western philosophies -- as it retells the story of Beowulf through the eyes of the "monster", and "Sophie's World" which ultimately places the reader as a character in a book about philosophy. Very clever. I get the same vibe from the show.

also -- any of you familiar with the philosopher who asked his students to imagine a table in a tree??? It reminded me of the comic book polar bear and the real one.

I don't think we should discuss Hobbes without including Calvin!

trinabobbina, I really like your thought process; please keep this idea in mind as the plot advances! I would love it if this were the case

I was startled to read someone mention Beowulf as I have been researching the subject for potential clues assuming Ethan Rom is an anagram for Herot Man.

Like many others here, I have too much time on my hands.

:rolleyes

I'm wondering about the last names of the characters -- was the sibling's last name "Rutherford"? The scientist Rutherford discovered how to scatter atoms...or something like that. I'm digging out some of my philosophy books to see if there are more links.

But, really, we've got Plato's Cave, Jon Locke, Rousseau, Bacon (!), and some plot events that reflect examples used by various philosophers...I wish I would have paid more attention back in philosophy 101!
