we've been going under the pretense that smokey is causing all those visions on the island (jack seeing his dad, kate seeing the horse, eko with yemi, etc).

but when smokey actually went after juliet and kate, the sonar fence STOPPED smokey from entering.

last night, ben's mom was at his window, within the confines of the fence. then later, when ben runs out, he's about to run through the fence when his mom says no (letting us know the fence is still on).

so, was ben's mom smokey? i'm going to have to say no.

and this now brings up whether any of the other visions were smokey...even the one where eko sees yemi and smokey comes out and kills him.

I wondered this myself. I could almost read into this that this is wwhen and how Jacob summoned Ben. Only thing I can come up with.

Well, maybe someone else was sneaking out that night and turned off the fence.

I was thinking the same thing. Perhaps the fence was off then.

entirely possible but immediately after he saw him mom in the window, he ran right to the fence so i would think it's implied that the fence was on.

This is an excellent point. Smokie can't seem to cross that fence and we never actually saw Smokie transition from Yemi to smoke monster.

There's no reason for us to think the fence was off. They'd just had a hostile encounter that day. If anything they were probably checking to make sure the fence was on that night.

Very good point.

It definitely seems like there are two separate forces causing visions on the island.

He ran to the fence right after it? I don't really remember. I thought Roger told him he sucked, and then he went out to the fence another day. Heh, guess I got to watch it again.

I thought it was another day as well. When he sees his mother outside the window, Ben looks away then looks back and she is gone. His father then came in and told him that he should be in bed.

On a seperate day, when he comes home after spending his birthday with Annie, he comes home to find his father passed out on the couch. That is when he runs out of the house and to the fence where he sees his mother.

Yeah, that's sort of how I remember it. Roger told him he sucked after Ben woke him up pulling off his shoes, and then he ran off.

Im guessing it was a screw up on the part of the producers.
I suspect in a few episodes they will explain that the fence had a malfunction.

There was no screw up involved. TPTB did exactly what they intended. Besides a perfectly plausible explanation would be that the fence was turned off by someone else. Or, we the viewer could have the wrong idea about the visions.

The fence wasn't off. She wasn't Smokey. She appeared because of Ben's specialness, which is similar to Walt's specialness. I am more apt to believe she was Jacob than Smokey. Of course, we don't know which side of the fence Jacob is on.
