This is a dialogue I came across in Season 2 of LOST between Jack and Locke that is VERY relevant to the season finale:
Locke: [explaining why he wanted to let the island monster drag him off] I believe that I was being tested.
Jack: Tested?
Locke: Yeah, tested. I think... that's why you and I don't see eye-to-eye sometimes, Jack because you're a man of science.
Jack: Yeah, and what does that make you?
Locke: Me, well, I'm a man of faith. Do you really think all this... is an accident? That we, a group of strangers survived, many of us with just superficial injuries? Do you think we crashed on this place by coincidence, especially this place? We were brought here for a purpose, for a reason, all of us. Each one of us was brought here for a reason.
Jack: Brought here? And who brought us here, John?
Locke: The island. The island brought us here. This is no ordinary place, you've seen that, I know you have. But the island chose you, too, Jack. It's destiny.
Jack: Did you talk with Boone about destiny, John?
Locke: Boone was a sacrifice that the island demanded. What happened to him at that plane was a part of a chain of events that led us here that led us down a path, that led you and me to this day, to right now.
Jack: And where does that path end, John?
Locke: The path ends at the hatch. The hatch, Jack all of it. All of it happened so that we could open the hatch.
Jack: No, no, we're opening the hatch so that we can survive.
Locke: Survival is all relative, Jack.
Jack: I don't believe in destiny.
Locke: [pause] Yes, you do. You just don't know it yet.
what do you guys make of this?

Outside of Jacob, Locke is the biggest sap on the island. When will you Locke-Lovers ever figure out the guy is a moron?

:omg:
(okay, there was no emoticon for "OOHHH!" as in "Ooh, he got that one good!")
Just when I think I could really like Locke, he does something that changes my mind. I have a feeling that he will continue to be this way, don't you??

Absolutely -- I used to love Locke (season one), but everytime I think he might redeem himself, he turns around and does something really stupid, irritating, etc. I want to like him again, but he just won't let me!

How could Gilligan know all along when the writers didn't even know at that point? If Gilligan was so intuative then why did he spend and entire season pushing a button, only to learn later that he could have just turned it off?

I believe all the losties are meant to spend thier lives on this island. Locke is just the first one to realize it. Through the Looking Glass demonstrated that Jack won't figure it out until it's too late.

Pushing the button did turn out to be important. It was only when Locke lost his faith in the island that all hell broke loose and Desmond had to risk his life to save everyone else.
I like this .... only time will tell ...

In context of the Walt apparition when he appeared to Shannon and her eventually being shot and The "Smoke Monster" seemingly taking forms of others and leading people into danger I have begun questioning things abou the end of "The Looking Glass".
Yemi led Eko to his death. Dave tried to lead Hurley off the cliff. So did Walt lead Locke to try and stop the call from being made ?
That would lead me to believe maybe Jack is trying to do the right thing. If he does end up unhappy of the island maybe it is because he ends up listening to Locke in the future.

Shannon got killed running after Walt
so maybe Walt is actually a "bad hallucination" and Jack and the other LOSTIES would've been better off if John Locke killed himself. Walt keeping John alive is going to kill everyone on the island

Yep. That was my point
one thing about locke, at least he isnt jack.
I'm thinking Locke should not be following/listening to the Walt hallucination, cause I think it's part of smokey. And smokey is a security system gone bad, hence the high tech fence to keep him/it out. Locke's problem is he wants to believe in fate/destiny too much. What I think eventually happens is, once Jack gets back to the beach and realizes Ben's order wasn't to kill Sayid et all, he's going to start agreeing with/siding with Locke and even perhaps Ben (and ignoring his ability to see reality). That's where things will go wrong. Jack will lose his man of science outlook and succumb to the man of faith. The man of faith will be making decisions without the balance of the main of science. So problems result from them not meeting eachother midway, finding that balance, that ying and yang karma thing.
Sometimes Locke is right, somethimes Jack is right. Two paths, hard to pick just one, they should be creating a middle path.
