Has anybody ever seen the movie "Quiet Earth"?
In that movie, there are only 3 people left behind after a new kind of technology deployed as a power source causes everybody else in the world to disappear at the moment of the deployment. When they meet and share stories, the survivors find the "Effect" as it is called that made all of the other people disappear occurred at the same instant as their deaths and that is why they didn't disappear or maybe wound up in a different reality than everyone else. Later one of the survivors gives his life to shut down the technology and when he dies, he is transported into another dimension.
So what if my quantum sinkhole transports people to an alternate reality if the moment of their death coincides with the moment they collide with the sinkhole?
The quantum sinkhole could have generated the gravitational forces that tore apart the plane.
The people on the ground who died didn't die until nanoseconds AFTER the plane went through the quantum sinkhole. The body of anybody who died BEFORE the plane went through the quantum sinkhole is not going to be found on the island (like maybe the body of Jack's father).
The people who survived the plane crash died at the moment the plane went through the quantum sinkhole. That would explain why there are so many of them when it seems more logical that more people would have died in the plane crash.
In response to an earlier comment on my quantum sinkhole theory, I don't think that the plane and its survivors are in a large land mass at the bottom of the quantum sinkhole. What I think is that the sinkhole probably gobbled them up and then spat them out into a different reality/dimension. It could have been doing this for centuries. The end of the sinkhole (or wormhole as it really ought to be called) that is on the island is stationary; the end of the wormhole that scoops up people and animals and artifacts from our world (and maybe not just from our world) is not anchored down. Perhaps it orbits around the sun and revisits different parts of the Earth at different intervals (sixteen year intervals, 40 year intervals)? Maybe the intervals are not always the same due to other gravitational forces at work like asteroids and comets.
Actually though, I don't think the people who survived the plane crash are dead at all. I think they are just the ones who survived the plane crash and that the plane crash occurred because of the gravitational force of the quantum sinkhole/wormhole. I also think as I stated previously that this wormhole will turn out to be a naturally occurring phenomenon that is consistent with quantum mechanics and/or string theory.
For an example of a documented and very strange natural occurrence involving physics, see the following link in reference to the Oklo Fossil Reactors

I also think that it's possible that the tail section of the plane did not go through the quantum sinkhole/wormhole and that there may have been some survivors in the tail section who didn't wind up on the island but are still in our reality. That would support Rose's belief that her husband who was in the tail section is still alive.
