I might be off base but there are only two clues i think are relevant to the creature 1) the official logo for the show has some kind of flying things in the air above the island. 2) the scene of the "object" flying past the engine as it explodes. I think that the creature is some kind of huge bird. I also believe that the bird as im calling it is after (i might be nuts but) the plane. I think the creature is what brought the plane down in the first place. Im might be wrong but if the creature was after people its had plenty of chances to get them(i.e. there all on the beach why not just go there and slaughter them) and the one time it killed someone it ditched the body. also it didn't kill locke so i think its after something else. what do you think?

That's a good theory, I think people might have touched on it before... Obviously, a bird of prey could have easily grabbed the pilot out and put him up in that tree...About knocking the trees, I guess it would be easier if it was up high or something...not sure about that though. And it could possibly have been flying by the plane as it was in the air or something. And Locke was looking up at it (if that was the same thing, of course) in the jungle/forest.. heh.

As to what its after, I don't really know...it could be possible.

I don't know...but I don't think it's a bird of prey. Can't really tell you why, but isn't the next episode called "the moth"?? so maybe a giant ugly moth looking thing??

I think there is a reason why it's not grabbing/attacking them at the beach. Maybe it doesn't like water? Maybe it is not after them at all. Maybe it only attacks if it feels threatend?

opps...sorry, forgot to introduce myself. this is my first post, so I am a newbie. :o

Interesting, the island is big but I don't think it is that big, the bird would have to have already been flying at 30,000 ft waiting for the plane otherwise by the time it would have gotten up there the plane would have been well past the island. Barring that, the plane had to travel forward for some time after the tail was ripped off, descending at a modest angle if our survivors were to survive the crash ( opinions vary on their state of aliveness). Throw in the fact that the bird would need to be huge and incredibly fast, generally not a good combination with birds, it would be easy to spot by our survivors, unless it gave up flying after they crashed?

Well, I would be thrilled if Mothra made an appearance. And maybe the "monster" is really Godzilla. It will be revealed that this show was actuallya conceived as a commemoration of the 50th anniverseray of Man-in-suit (godzilla to the unitiated)! The island is actually revealed to be the previously only imagined in a little boy's imagination Island of the Monsters.

Sorry, couldn't resist. Besides, I like that theory way more than the wooly mammoth theory. Guess I harbor a grudge against sadistic elephant-like creatures.

Welcome to the boards (and my twisted sense of humour) Gemislost. If you take a look through the many threads, you should be able to find one that contains the song lyrics to a song called "The moth" that uses a moth as a metaphor for addicition. And given that further spoilers reveal this episode to be Charlie-centric, it makes sense since he should be going into Herion withdrawl anytime now.

With the trees moving like that maybe it's not even a bird, but a group something that lives in the trees - armored monkeys anyone? Makes no sense but explains the sound and visuals we've been getting.

My only problem with it being a group/pack of some form of creature is in the French ladies broadcast, she states that "It" killed everyone, not "they."

She meant the island itself... maybe..
More and more hints lately have been pointing that way... Locke : you must give the island something in return... like it has some sort of "watched" consciousness, just like our world has syncronicity and coincidences ( I don't know if I lead on to this earlier but both have to do with our own God, it's him trust me )... but a lot more focused and obvious on this island... Maybe alien x after all ?

speaking of the french woman...the translation given is wrong by Shannon...why is this not a big deal on these boards, I speak French and Shannon clearly missed the line "...if I get out, I will try to get to the black rock."

I haven't thought of BOP. At any rate, I think the "monster" has left the people alone for awhile because it had a nice dinner of Polar Bear to dine on for awhile. Each episode is a 24 hour period, so not much time has lapsed in reality. We might be hearing from the "monster" again soon, after it gets hungry again.

The last time the "monster" was around Locke saw it. From what I remember Locke was standing in a small clearing and looked up at the "monster." While a BOP could have been in a near by tree, I was lead to believe it was standing on the ground in the clearing...if there was really anything "living" there at all, but that's a whole another theory!

Call me crazy, but I must have "Lost" on the brain. But, I had a dream the other night that I was on the island. I actually saw the creature, and it was a huge bird-like animal with huge jaws. :lol It was also drving a big bulldozer-like machine, so that would explain the mechanical noises when the monster is around. I don't know why I dreamed this. I guess b/c "Lost" is my fave new show! By the way, first time posting on these boards. :D

To BJLK:

I think each epi represents 2 days on the island. I read an interview which suggested this time frame. Plus, since the first season covers the first 40 days on the island, they would need 40 epis to get there. That's an awful lot of epis for one season...
