I ask that because a lot of our theories go on some info given by the producers. One such item was that the whole thing could be explained with science or pseudo science. Nothing paranormal.

Well that rule has already been broken. A psychic is a paranormal thing. Prophesy and such also are involved. This cannot be explained by science and broke the rule.

I think they may have been lying so that surprises would unexpected.

They said that they respected Michael Crichton for how he does stories. What Crichton does is has one initial premise that you have to accept but then everything else in the story follows logically from that. Look at sphere where there was a device that made your thoughts become reality. That let there be exceptionally fantastic occurences, but it was still just tied to that one initial premise. To the producers that is pseudoscience. I don't know what is pulling the levers to make the island work the way it does, but there is going to be a consistent reason for it. People took the producers statement too literally- look at the context where they were talking about crichton.

The Sphere was alien technology. The psychic is not.

Unfortunately, most Americans and Europeans actually believe in magic. Excuse me, "psychic powers", a 20th century term introduced to make the belief in magic somehow less laughable.

So when they say the show will be rooted in science or pseudoscience, we sadly have to admit that for the majority fo the viewing audience magic *is* pseudoscience.

Hey Max..wc back: yes..on chat this a.m. we discussed this. Last night we stated, unequivocally that psychics are not in the realm of science.

If you've read my Producer's theory, you know my opinion on this.

Back to AC Clarke's rule:

Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.

Go back to the Middle Ages and tell everyone that you can travel from Paris to London and cross the English Channel by underground tunnels. They will literally fry you with questions.

And this was said before we ever saw smokie....This has been my complaint lately, the view by a vocal minority here that statements by TPTB have precluded the paranormal, pseudoscience or even science fiction.

They constantly contradict themselves, and even lie, to throw us off.

Is this your producer theory thread LIW?

My own thoughts:

hi, evasion of the truth, that in itself constitutes a lie> that is our country's [America's] policy,, it is in our legal system,, our court system.
TPTB & producers, could have remained silent, and that would have been fine. Instead, they chose to speak, then spoke evasively, then resorted to creating false impressions. > that's called lying... lea :(

the brain is a stack of electric wires made of specific proteins instead of copper, yet it allows electric impulses to journey in this huge network

Basic sciences will tell you that any electric circuit produce electromagnetic field & can reversely be disturbed by other magnetic field

With that in mind, what would happen if someone can put himself in a state of mind that generates electric impulses that all together generates a certain electromagnetic disturbance around thus influencing the electric circuitry of an other human being which stand close enough? The change of electric impulses in the brain of the disturbance receiver may provoke a different state of his mind

With basic science , I ve just put here a rationnal explanation of the "magic" of telepathy and psychic powers. And trust me I hate magic & non rationnality.
remember we dont know jacks**t about the human brain those days and that even GSM relay antennaes influence our mental health

So go figure what a giant magnet on a mysterious island could do on our brain ?

it s the same for SMOKEY, you have to remember that good feeling & bad feelings in our mind are managed by a balance of enabled/disabled circuits linked to ideas that make you feel good & ideas that make you feel bad (subjective, depends on the subject)
The circuits responsible for bad feeling can be more or less disabled by psychotropes such as Anvil,Xanax, chocolate, ect.. The protein (a neurotransmitter) is disturbed by those chemicals & thus the impulse through the bad feeling circuit is impeached as long as the chemical is not fully absorbed by the metabolism.

reversely, some magnetic fields (from a giant magnet for instance) may theoretically enhance the electric impulses through the bad feelings circuits, making the subject obsessed with his fears & inner sources of anxiety.
I believe smokey is the typical visual hallucination resulting from the state of mind that the radiation creates in the brain (just like the white light that people see when they faint or when they pass thru clinical death) . You enter a psychotic nightmare that may provokes heart attack if you cant put yourself together out of your own fears.
Which explain why Locke & Eko saw it & survived: their faith gives them a peace of mind toward their inner fears

I can't believe someone came up with this in 2004.
The archives are full of precious jewels like this.
