48 Survivors

Okay, I'm a bit confused. We started out with 48 survivors and the death toll is up to 3. The Pilot and the man who got sucked into the engine died in the pilot episode and then the woman drowned in "White Rabbit." Now I know Jake is trying to keep the pilot's death a secret from the others, but he also said there were 47 of them on the island after the women drowned.

Did he just forget about the other guy?

Maybe I'm reading too much into this. Any thoughts...>D

- A guy was sucked into the engine, but that was before the survivors had finished coming to, and stuff. I doubt he was considered by the writers one of the 48.

- Shrapnel guy is first down - we have 47

- Joanna, the scuba diver who drowned - we have 46

The one body I haven't seen since the pilot episode is the guy who lost his leg under a piece of wreckage. Jack gets Locke and others to help him pull the guy out and then puts a tourniquet on the artery in the leg, but I can't recall having seen that guy since the moment Jack looks up to see the wing about to fall on Hurley and Claire.

I would assume that he (the guy minus the leg) would be in Jack's tent, just like Shrapnel guy was until he died, but in the different takes of the tent in the White Rabbit episode, the tent appeared to be empty.

Of course, it could be that the guy died the day of the crash, or that the tent is big and has a couple of partitions, if you will.

Or it could be an oversight (which would disappoint a good chunk of the audience, I think)

I believe later at the end during his speach he corrects himself and says 46.

Jack did comment in the second episode that the guy with the leg cut off would make it.

I only heard him say 46, never heard 47... and I doubt the engine-sucked guy counted :D And didn't they say the leg guy would be okay? Or am I making things up? hehe :D

A survivor is some body who does not die from something. The pilot would not have been included in anybodies count of people who survived. The count would have been made on the beach after everything calmed down. The pilot died almost immediately after he was discovered, so no one on the beach would be including some one they could not forget was dead in their head count. Same with the jet engine dude, why would you count him? He died as a result of the plane crash therefore he is not a survivor.

And whatever happened to the leg guy? Jack does not seem to be making visits to check up on him.

I really love the idea that we have seen the entire cast for the majority of the programme, theres no such thing as an extra on this show, so me thinks that in future seasons (fingers crossed) that we will get to hear the stories of other survivors who have been in the show since the beginning
