Hear me out before you laugh at my theory (or laugh now, and hear me out, then laugh again)
Many Canadian province speak french. The women giving the distress signal doesn't necessarily have to be French. Could be French-Canadien. Now Kate, she's Canadian. Perhaps she know exactly what was being said on the distress messege. It could also be that her past involves the island. Her eagerness to trek into the jungle could also be explained with her desire to find out/cover up something relating to her.
Come join me in the edge of this branch!

Hehe, good one! Did you read my "Clone Theory"?
Being Canadian myself I think that is just an awesome theory. Imaging they are in Canada ...and ISLAND in Canada.
An Island in Canada with clones!! Yeaaaah....that's it!

Polar bears are also Canadian. Perhaps the Canadians are trying to build an emipre by conquering islands with polar bears, waiting for them to send messages in French, and then sending their Korean population to stake claim. :p

Something like 60% of Canadians speak English as a first language. Most of those who speak French live in Quebec provence. It's quite possible Kate doesn't know French. I've known several Candians who did not speak French.
Interesting thought that they may be north, not south. I was wondering the other day if perhaps the Polar Bear wasn't out of place, but the island itself was "Lost". I know it's a stretch, but could the tropical conditions be explained in some science/pseudoscience way - perhaps it's been influenced by some sort of undersea rift, hydrothermal vents, etc?

I wondered about this aspect too, Klang007 and posted about it in the Character Forum in the thread on Kate's character. I thought she might understand French but I didn't consider the possibility that the 16-year-old distress call was made by a French-Canadian woman instead of a Frenchwoman. Interesting observation!
Are you perhaps French-Canadian? If so, did her accent sound French-Canadian instead of European French to your ears?

Grimme - no, I'm afraid I'm not Canadian, nor do I have much in-depth knowledge of Canada. I didn't think about, or know of any difference in dialect between France-French (for lack of better term) and Canadian-French.
Anyone more versed in this area care to step forward?

The message sounded to me like it was Parisian French rather than any form of Quebecois. I'm certainly no expert here, but the accent sounded pretty flawlessly French.

My French was adequate for remedial use in Montreal, but I couldn't begin to tell what type of French was on the transmission. I've asked a relative that was born in Quebec to check it out. I do know that Candian french (Quebecois, Acadian) are different from the French spoken today in France. Someone fluent could probably identify a more specific location also, as we English speakers could do with English accents/dialects.
When did Canada go tropical ? You can find palm trees in southern BC, yes they are zoned to grow there.

I think there may actually be something to this. For more information, go to:
cwd.ptbcanadian.com/index2.html (http://cwd.ptbcanadian.com/index2.html)
There's a great deal of important backup information there, but in particular scroll down about 1/3 of the way and click on:
Our expert cartographers have put this together as an indication of our eventual conquest (http://cwd.ptbcanadian.com/map3.html)
There's definitely a South Pacific component to the plan.;)

drypelia,
These links should come with SPEWING WARNINGS!!
You owe me the cleaning of the keyboard, monitor and jeans - and this is not counting the good coffee wasted, and the lack of oxygen I suffered when I was CHOKING on it.
Thanks for the link!

Sorry, no can do. Although I am a US citizen, I subscribe to the Canadian World Domination philosophy - If you make a mess, you clean it up yourself! :b

(Glad you enjoyed the site! - I'm also rather partial to the cartographer's expertise - shows a predisposition to a more wholelistic approach... they truly understand the Gestalt of World Domination!)

Maybe we can get those cartographers to do our island map. Anyone know them?

The lady on the distress signal is speaking Parisian french.
There is a difference between Quebecois and Parisian french.
They can barely understand each other, as on is considered a 'trashy' dialect.
Care to guess which one?
