I came to the conclusion just now, I was noticing how Locke says to Jack in the next EP " I've looked into the eye of the island, and it is magical " And I thought maybe it was magical because the island was already magical to Locke, it had cured him of his disability..maybe thats how Charlie will get clean, Locke will tell him his secret, perhaps indirectly, I thinkk if Charlie uses the islands mysertious "powers" ? he will easily be able to find comfort, peace, acceptance... see what i mean ?
Then if Charlie sees the beast, it may have looked peaceful and soothing to him, or maybe it will be like a fix, a good rush ? Wow man it was sooo coool !! and just like that he's no longer a junkie.. One by one they each find the island is helping them, becoming new people, leaving their fears behind, maybe to reveal the monsters true appearance much later.

Yung: That's an interesting perception. I don't think any of us were thinking about the creature as being benevolent or the island using its "power" for good, but certainly that's been the effect on Locke at least until this point. I guess we'll see if there are any repercussions later. Sometimes when a favor is granted, a favor is expected in return.

We all tend to fear what we don't understand, but maybe with understanding the reverse happens. If we embrace it, maybe the fear dies and we can become stronger. Have you noticed any other things that might make you think the "magic" will work this way?

Maybe he never will. Wouldn't it be funny if he just started growing some on the island?

Charlie is a heroin addict. How is he going to grow that from scratch? It's not like he smokes weed and might have a seed or two in his stash.

I have no idea how they are made or what they are made of. I thought they all came from plants - my bad.

Thanks for responding, I was watching this post to see if people might go hmmmm.

I was thinking people like sawyer, boones sister ( the spoiled chick ), the chinese man, people mean like that, the ones who seem too self invovled to begin to actually understand how to cope with the situation, these people will be killed by IT.

Along with a lot of the other nonames.

How can I back up the magic ? It won't be magic for the above stated... more like hell.. Man, maybe they are dead,
and JJ HAD to say otherwise... but that would suck, way too easy.

We're going to learn a lot more about the main characters before we see anymore mr BIG... time sucks. minor setback.

The worst thing about this idea is that everyone may have a different view on how the beast looks..
if anyone "REBORN" sees it, they may live. and would have another hint for us... CHEESY !!!! We would never really get to see it.. PLEASE DONT DO THIS LAME THEORY !!!

You know you have a reputation to keep here right JJ ?

I WANT REALITY ! WITH A SMALL> NARROW EXCEPTION.
IT IS SCI_FICTION A BIT RIGHT ?

Casting Matthew Fox as the main charcter MADE it real.
I think most people are watching the other Charlie ( his character on Party of Five ) stuck on an island... man does that confuse me sometimes. ( His name being charlie there and on lost its Jack.. just because I knew the character)

I don't see Sawyer or Yin being killed off. Shannon maybe but doubtful. I think they will only kill off one of the 14 main characters this season. JJ has as much as said that in interviews. I'm thinking more likely someone we'd never suspect. That's how he works.

yung, good theories. I agree that somehow the monster is a manifestation of thoughts or feelings. in my opinion it is either their fear manifested into an animal looking beast (i.e. the polar bear was fearful to the boy and it appeared around the time they were walking up the mountain...they were afraid in the cockpit and the combined fear of four people created, etc.) But then Locke has not been afraid since crashing on the island. He, unlike anyone else, has received a "miracle." to him the whole experience has been his "destiny" and he is ready to fullfill it. That is why his experience with the "monster" was thrilling and amazing. And why for him all his dreams are coming true (walking, killing the boar, finding the dog, being a hero of sorts.) I wouldnt be surprised if Rose's husband really is alive because she is not afraid, she is confident just like Locke.

Anyway, regarding Charlie, if Locke were to help him I would guess that he would either 1) somehow make Charlie believe it is by Locke's own power that he is doing it so he can win him over or gain control over him (if his character is evil) or 2) he will share is miracle with him and tell him how his life was changed. good ideas yung.

I like the idea that the island might somehow be benevolent. But I would be disappointed if Locke used his "magic" knowledge to help Charlie avoid an agonizing withdrawal. I want to see that agony. I want to see what it does to his character. I want to see the pain and moral dilemmas it inflicts on those around him.

Oh, stop looking at me like that. You decided to watch a show about a bunch of people crash-landing on a deserted island for the warm fuzzies? 8)

I not suggesting he will tell hime his secret, just give him a guiding push, just like he did for Jack tonight. I just didn't think
they would get to Jack so soon... now he too has met the eye of the island.. it looked like his dad. How nice.

I had the feeling from the second episode, when Charlie was watching Locke make the whistle, that Locke would sense Charlie's addiction before anyone else. Now, seeing as Locke already gave Jack a little pep-talk tonight, I don't think Charlie will get as open a response from him.

Heroin (and opium) is made from poppies, a flower. When I found that out it gave a whole new meaning to the scene in The Wizard of Oz where Dorothy and the Lion are falling asleep in a field of poppies.
