Iseult of the White Hands

That's a quote from my favorite author (George RR Martin), BTW, when people start to get really creative about What Will Happen Next in his series.
This is what I think about the island and the plane crash survivors: I think that the island was a scientific installation, possibly developing biological weapons for the French, or perhaps some other, more nefarious agency. They kept animals on the island as research subjects. Then, about 16 years ago, whatever they were working on (a virus, perhaps?) got loose and killed all but one of them.
The message itself- it seems to me that it was meant for someone very specific to hear- someone who would know what "it" is. The message may have been a warning- don't come here- rather than a plea for help.
The plane crash. I think that a random group of people were on a plane that went down in the Pacific. The pilots looked for the nearest land to set down on and that was the island. I'm not really surprised that the passengers have such interesting back stories- in my experience, most planes are full of people with stories to tell. I rather suspect that the purpose of the show is to explore how people react to the situation and one another. A plane is a cross section of a lot of different kinds of people who often never meet or interact even though they are on the same plane, going to the same place.
I think that the "monster" in the trees sounds mechanical because it *is*. I think it's probably a vehicle used by the last survivor of the group from 16 years ago. But as a plot device, it's interesting to see how people react to something they don't know about or understand.
So I know it's not as much fun as time travel and woolly mammoths... but it makes sense to me.
