I pay some attention to the local high school teams. Never go to any games though. The city teams are all weak compared to the suburb schools. One of the problems is that only four of the city schools play at the highest classification, 4A, and they have to face the eastside powerhouses. The other city schools are 3A and one of them is a large Catholic school that is actually two schools... a boy's school named O'Dea and a girl's school named Holy Names (aka Holy Dames). Since classification by total student body O'Dea, which has the same number of boys as a 4A school, plays at the 3A level and totally dominates at football. If they were to count O'Dea and Holy Names as one school for classification purposes and force them to play at the 4A level then A) there would be more competition in the city 3A league, and B) they would be a really good city team competing with those monsters across the lake.

Yes i do care about my former high school team. Unfortunately they lost in the 3rd playoff round this year. Go Gg Belvidere Bucs, with your wishbone formation.
I wonder where good ole Vern Pottenger (Football Coach) is these days.

Ah...Gotta love the Wishbone. Always makes for some exciting football. A bit monotonous as far as play selection goes but every play is a chance to break huge yardage.

They have had a lot of success with that system. They won state championships in 93(my senior year), and 94. They may have won more since i left town, but i am not sure. That whole town just goes nuts for High School football.

The WIAA season is done and O'Dea (see above) lost the state 3A title game to Skyline (from Mill Creek, north of Seattle in south Snohomish County) 42-35. The Spartans overcame a 28 - 7 halftime deficit to beat the Irish.
The 4A title went to Lewis and Clark from Vancouver (Across the Columbia River from Portland, OR) over eastside power Bothell 21 - 14.
In 2A Prosser beat Burlington-Edison 42 - 7, 1A had Royal over Connell 28 - 16, 2B was DeSales, a Catholic school from Walla Walla, 30 - 0 over Toutle Lake and in the 8-man class 1B Almira-Coulee-Hartline beat Odessa 38-14.
And that's the report from Washington State.

I absolutely care. My high school is a perennial 5A powerhouse. (We've put several players in the NFL, and a couple of more are now playing MLB)
They got bumped out of the playoffs this year, but I still care.
I watched one of the 5A games this past Friday night. It featured two teams
that both run a pro-style offense, and was quite frankly one of the best football games I've seen all year at any level of play.
North Gwinnett 38, Newnan 35
The county I live in is loaded. We've had several of our teams ranked in the top 10 nationally over the past few years.

Must be something in the water. :D
O'Dea has hit the rankings a few times over the years. Seahawks reciever Nate Burleson is a graduate of the school. Odd thing is that a reciever is about the last person you would think would come out of O'Dea because they run a wing-t offense. He took a highlight film to the recruiters at Nevada which featured all 5 of his catches his senior year.

Matt and Jon Stinchcomb both played in the NFL (linemen) and went to my high school. Seth Marler, a kicker, was also drafted by the NFL, but he now plays Arena football.
Braves outfielder Jeff Francoeur is another alum, but chose to play pro baseball instead of football. He was a talented wide receiver in HS. He played on the team that won the state title 3 years running. In his senior year he led Parkview in TD receptions (14) and interceptions (15).
We've had a couple of other people drafted, but I don't think they lasted long. I know we had one RB drafted already, but i think he got hurt.
Brad Lester, the RB at Auburn is also an alum who will probably be drafted in the NFL when he graduates, as will UGA freshmen RB Caleb King.
We don't talk much about Caleb King though because he was an all-state player for us for 3 years before transferring to Greater Atlanta Christian for his senior year. They hired his older brother, and put him on their coaching staff in order to steal King away from us.
In 2005, Sports Illustrated ranked my high school (Parkview) as #7 in the top 10 Sports Schools nation-wide. We went undefeated for 3 straight years and accordingly won the state 5A title in 2000, 01, and 02. We also won the state 5A title in 97. When I was there we were a pretty good 4A team, and made the playoffs regularly, but never won a state title.
