I just discovered that the rug in my bathroom was placed in an odd position because it was covering up some nasty looking old rug-backing from a former rug. Ick.

So I made a thread. :D

No, seriously, ask your cleaning questions here, or lend your advice.

So, how do I get that stuff off the vinyl floor with out damaging the surface?

My only words of wisdom when it comes to cleaning:

It is much easier to keep something clean than it is to get it cleaned once it has gotten really dirty.

If my house got really untidy, I'd probably just get another one. I'm that lazy

Try what Freck said and also try paint thinner (mineral spirits not turpentine). Let it soak a while and use a putty knife...stiff, not sharp...and scrape it off carefully. You really have to be good with the putty knife or you'll gouge the floor.

Whatever solvent you try, try it first in a hidden place. Stuff like nail polish remover or Goof Off will melt that floor fast....but also test the GooGone and thinner !! Ya never know.

Thank you, Freck and Sals. :)
I know I've got some Goo-Gone around someplace, too.

I've also thought about using moist heat and an old soft spatula. Or a bigger rug. :D

A friend of mine did that in college. The sink got too full of dirty dishes, so he just threw them out!

If you drop a raw egg, cover it with flour or salt, leave it minute, then sweep it up with a broom....

let's try this -- get off the puter... get dressed [or not] ... put your crap away, where it belongs... clean up your mess from last nite... wipe up the coffee you spilled on & around your keyboard.. actually empty your ashtray...
if you have a friggin' cat, either actually clean it's litterbox [and fumigate] or.... get rid of it

*the cat, not the box*
*well, ok, the box too*

Try using ammonia. Use straight ammonia and a towel. Let it sit for a few minutes, 10-15 minutes maybe. The dirt will come out. Try scrubbing with a nylon brush. Make sure to mop up the ammonia with a damp towel. You need to rinse it with vinegar, perhaps ½ cup of vinegar per gallon of water. The vinegar removes any lingering ammonia.

Be sure to use plenty of ventilation :)

Hope this old trick works!

Someone put something hot on my kitchen table and it left a whitish spot on the finish. Is there a way to get that off?

Sounds like you already did.:D

There's a trick with a hot iron over a soft cloth over the mark. Don't let the iron sit there long. The ring is moisture trapped under the finish and the heat will soften the finish and allow the moisture out. But you have to be VERY careful not to apply too much heat.

If anyone's concerned about dangerous cleaning chemicals, google vinegar uses to begin with.
Others helps like lavender essensil oils can come later.

:pissed: Anyone have suggestions for a garbage disposal that won't drain? The other side of the sink is fine.I would suggest that it might be clogged. Other than that, I have no info for you. The only garbage disposal I have is my husband and I'm sure both sides of him work perfectly.:rolleyez:

It took several different things, but today it's finally working. Thank goodness for friends who have electrical and plumbing skills willing to help out on a holiday weekend! :)

A Russian woman.

CERAMIC TILE CARE AND MAINTENANCE

What should I use for cleaning ceramic tile?
Armstrong Once‘n Done® Floor Cleaner works well, then you should rinse with water. See our Maintenance and Care for detailed instructions.

Where can I buy Armstrong Once’n Done® Floor Cleaner for my ceramic tile?
Click to Find a Store near you.

Should a sealer be used on ceramic tile?
A glazed tile is already stain proof, so there is no purpose to putting on a sealer. You may put a penetrating sealer on your unglazed tile or your grout joints. The penetrating sealer is an invisible, stain resistant shield that is absorbed into the surface.

Should ceramic tile be waxed?
Glazed tile should never be waxed. The purpose of the glaze is to give you a maintenance-free floor. If you wax the glaze, you will create more work for yourself. To keep your tile looking new, use a small amount of vinegar in warm water, plus a clean rinse.

What is used to remove grout haze from tile?
Most grouts today are polymer modified, which means they have a latex in them. Use a latex grout film remover for cleaning grout haze from tile surfaces. Do not use muriatic acid.

Can I vacuum ceramic floor tile?
Yes, but don’t use a beater bar, often considered part of the rug attachment, because it can damage the floor tile.

A couple of years ago I discovered these (http://www.amazon.com/Euro-Pro-SC710S-Euro-Pro-Steamer/dp/B0000E6EE5/ref=pd_bbs_6?ie=UTF8&s=home-garden&qid=1197735871&sr=8-6) and fell in love with them. Right now I only have the handheld version, but I'm hoping to get this one (http://www.amazon.com/Mc-Cullough%C2%AE-Heavy-Duty-Steam-Cleaner/dp/B000K9S2VK/ref=sr_1_34?ie=UTF8&s=home-garden&qid=1197736063&sr=8-34) (or something equivalent) soon. For people with sensitivity to chemicals, or with any sort of dust allergies, they work great.

Unless it'a Artillery Fungus....he didn't describe the spots. Tiny, slightly raised, round, defined black dots are artillery fungus, bigger blotchy black areas are mildew.

Clorox is great for mildew as Mel said but artillery fungus.....abandon hope.

LOL!

I am hoping to get the boat in the water early april for some testing before taking the family out. I have to do some work to the lower unit over the winter - the previous owner tried to take the lower unit off and broke 2 bolts in the process.
