First! When I saw which one this was, I was not excited b/c I remember it being on a "which was the worst episode" poll (I picked "Stranger...") Also Bernard and Rose are not my favorite characters. But I was pleasantly suprised. It wasn't bad at all. The Rose/Bernard flashback was inspiring. I had never really thought about the timeline when I first saw this episode, so I always assumed R & B had been together for like 30 years. Turns out it's been less than a year I would guess, if they were on their honeymoon in Australia before the crash. And before they were engaged, they were together 5 months, and Rose had a year to live. So really they are newlyweds.

Bernard is so sweet and I thought their story meshed nicely with his desire to "do" something. But then in the end, when he understood and believed Rose, he was like "if you have to stay, then I have to stay. We'll never leave" So cute!

Ben was awesome as usual with his smile at Locke's questioning. I found it comical how Jack made the rope shot with his arm extended, twisted around and swinging from a net. Our hero, right? I did always wish that he and Kate could have finished their conversation when Kate said she was sorry she kissed him! But how great was Michael coming out of the jungle!

Catnap first of all congratulations on your "worst episode" pick ! Who could ever forget that grotesque love scene ! I also grew to like Bernard and Rose after initially finding Rose really irritating, then she graduated to Mother Abigail in "The Stand" and then her classic confrontation with Jack in TTLG and the magic "I'll smack you in your face" comment ! After that she was top of the pops !

Yes, they were lovely together, and I'm surprised that people, especially Claire, didn't gravitate more to them - they were so down to earth and comfortable. All the niggling at each other cracked me up. So normal.

What is really annoying and still puzzling me, is why, when Bernard asked Sawyer if he'd help him shift the rocks to make his signal, and Sawyer in his usual lazy, wouldn't-want-to-raise-a-sweat way said he wouldn't, he said "I say Pasadena." Does anyone know what the hell does that mean ? I remember people talking about it when the ep first showed but I don't think anyone came up with an answer. I even looked it up in Lostpedia and all that came up with was that Pasadena was the registation city of the Valenzetti Foundation Organization. This was connected to "Lost", and also to "Alias". If anyone knows anything about this please put me out of my misery ! Otherwise I'll just shut up !

I didn't find the net scene very appealing - maybe its just Jack has no sex appeal ! Is it just coincidence (or fate) that two (at least) of Jack's love scenes (sort of) have been on the worst pick episodes ? I have an idea why Kate said she was sorry she kissed him....

I remember Michael coming out of the jungle, and thinking "Wow, things are going to hot up now ...."

I think Sawyer said "I say Pasadena" as a way of saying "I'll pass", because of the 'Pas' in Pasadena.

You're probably right, Cerberus - its just that because this is "Lost" we tend to look for things that aren't even there ! Well I do anyway !

OK - back to finish off.:)
Dr. Giggles :rotfl: I think that was Sawyer's best ever ! Classic ! It made up a bit for the put downs he's been putting up with lately. When Jack invites Kate to go with him on his search for the Others instead of Sawyer it was just another kick in the backside for Sawyer. "I'm not inviting you, I'm inviting Kate. And I've already got a gun. But thanks for offering". You have to give Sawyer a bit of credit for not smacking him in the face ! And Kate for that matter with that smug smirk on her face. Remember the times Sawyer has stood up for you Kate. Then when she says she's flattered that Jack chose her instead of Sawyer and he shoots her down in flames saying that "They (the others) didn't want you !" Well thats a good way of making a girl feel special !:D:D Just a thought, but if Sawyer had gone with Jack, would he and Jack have maybe ended up in the net together ?

How did Jack get that gun ? I can't remember.

When Rose and Bernard are talking about building the SOS sign and Rose says they should consult with Jack first, Bernard queries why. Jack is not the president, he's a doctor. Rose - "You're a dentist." It kind of sums up how all their lives have changed (obviously), they're all out of their depths.

Poor old Bernard tries so hard with his SOS signal but he drives everyone away with his overbearing manner. "I just want to get my wife home. Rose. I want to get Rose home." Then when she realizes that the island has healed her, he is quite content to stay there with her if thats what she wants, and live happily ever after.:makeout:

Rose is counselling Locke now - don't give up on your dreams. She's helped so many of them - Charlie, Hurley, Jack (well she tried). I used to think she was an interfering old baggage, but now I love her for it. I would love her to have a go with Sawyer - I don't think he would have a clue what to do ! I can't see him being rude to her.

Locke thinks his leg will take at least 4 weeks to heal. "But honey, you and I both know it's not going to take that long."

S.O.S. isn't a favorite of mine either, but I'm sure I picked "Adrift" as worst episode just for wasting my valuable time watching Michael and Sawyer argue for almost an hour. LOL :D
"Stranger" was in season 3- BTW

Bernard is just guilt-ridden about faking their honeymoon and taking Rose to a 'Healer' in the middle of the Outback, which eventually leads them to the crash of Oceanic 815. Plus, he's a man and he needs to fix things. LOL. I actually thought Rose was kind of a bitch for publically humiliating Bernard like she did. Maybe just talk to him in private?
I loved both scenes with Rose and Locke. Both at the airport and
also at the beach.

The interesting dialogue from Isaac was that (not exactly quoting here) certain places on Earth have energy, it could be geological or magnetic... and to Rose: it's not that you can't be healed, this is not the right place for you...Luckily for her, she found the right place, right?

See Ozanna and LnL? Even Locke is still wondering about Ben and the button and judging by the look on his face-he probably did push it. I love prisoner Ben manipulating everyone, even in his condition and under harsh circumstances he's tyrannical.

You're right Zia prisoner Ben is such a delight ! He has the best creepy face of anyone I can think of, but he's somehow still appealing in a very peculiar way !

I just noticed Jack's comment to Ben "I was never that good at bedside manners anyway." Well ain't that the truth !

I was surprised that Jack admitted his bedside manner sucks too. I forgot to mention that in my last post. LOL :)

Rose and Bernard: Rose really bothered me this episode with the way she treated Bernard. I certainly understand her reasons for not wanting to get off the island. Now she needed to stop her husband from trying to do that very thing. She couldn’t just tell him why because that would reveal her lie about being healed by Isaac.

I also feel sorry for Rose. Because of the FBs we can see why she couldn’t share the joy of her true healing with her husband. That would have drove me crazy to keep it inside!

Bernard wanted to fix things (like many husbands). Not only do we see him try to fix the current situation but he also tried to fix Rose. I can understand his desire to see her healed and live a long life with her, especially since he waited for 56 years before meeting his soul mate.

He was wrong to take her to Australia under false pretenses, but he was right in trying to build an SOS sign. He had three things going against him though, the lack of desire from the Losties, his management style, and his wife’s open opposition to his plan.

When Rose made the comment of him being a dentist, and the others smirked about it, it really bothered me. I have been in the dental field for over 25 years and being a dentist is nothing to be ashamed of. Whether a person is a doctor or a dentist, or a phone man, they can make a decision to build an SOS sign and ask for help from the others. Jack did not need to give his approval, although I don’t see him being against it at all. Why no one thought of making a large sign before now is something I don’t understand anyway.

Rose should have pulled him aside to talk him out of it instead of contending with him in public. Just as Bernard asked to speak to her in private instead of humiliating her. Even at that point, she said he was giving the group false hope loud enough for the others to hear. He was doing what he thought was the right thing, and on any other island beside this one it would have been. Bernard is truly blown away by the Losties/Redshirts resignation to stay on the island and do nothing to get themselves saved (except for the raft that got blown up) :D

I enjoyed the FB of their first meeting and the proposal. I vote for Bernard for “best eyes” on the show. I bet he was a looker when he was young.

In the FB about their “honeymoon” in Australia, I think he should have told her his plans before leaving the USA. Perhaps he didn’t because he knew she would object. She had already made peace with the fact that she was dying. However, Bernard wanted more than a year with her. Additionally, Rose should not have lied about Isaac healing her, however, she knew Bernard would not stop looking for a cure and she just wanted to enjoy the time they did have, even if it was only a year.

BTW, what did Isaac see when he put his hands up to Rose’s face? He seemed spooked. He knew right at that moment that he could not help her. “It’s not that you can’t be healed…this is not the right place for you”.

In the end, Rose did apologize to Bernard. However, I think she should have apologized for disrespecting him in public as well as lying to him. Once Bernard understood what had happened and why Rose did not want to leave the island, he was okay with staying there forever. He just wanted to love his wife and be with her.

Locke: Acting out of sorts and frustrated in trying to remember the map on the blast door. He just needed to get out and “stretch his legs” and have a talk with Rose who knew his secret. They both know Locke’s leg will be healed before the time Jack estimated. They know the healing power of the island. When he got back to the hatch, his head was clearer and he was able to remember the map.

Jack and Kate: Poor Kate, she was so puppy-eyed about Jack’s request for her to accompany him. Until he told her he asked Sayid first and the only reason he asked her was because he knew “they” didn’t’ want her.

I agree with Jack, she should have told him about the costumes and beard she found in the other hatch. But because he did not share secrets with her she would not share with him. She wanted desperately to be let back into the club.

How did Jack get that gun ? I can't remember.

Anal gave it to him. She said he would need I more than she did.

Zia, Ozanna, and catnap: I too loved that weird smile that Ben gives at Locke's frustrated questioning about the buttons. What a great character!

I actually quite enjoy this episode. I've always liked the Rose and Bernard characters, and their flashback seemed deserved and also advanced the story (the healing properties of the island) unlike some other unneccessary episodes *coughNikkiandPaolocough*.

I loved that our assumptions about R and B being a long standing couple were broken. I love that they seem like a normal married couple, even if they are still newlyweds.

Bernard has a fantastic line: I think I liked you better when you just hit people with your stick. :D

The caught in a net scene amuses me.

The end, both with the intercutting of Rose talking to Bernard, and their scenes in the airport, and the various pairings set to music (love that Sawyer gets stuck iwth Vincent), and of course Michael, really top this episode off for me. Fantastic editing work.

Sawyer nicknames:
Dr. Giggles: Jack
Norma Rae: Bernard

This epi never bothered me like it did for others in the past... It was a first to me when I arrived at this board and noticed the negative comment about SOS. No, it wasn't the greatest epi, but it wasn't bad at all imo.

There are a few parallels to be found in this epi, most especially having to do with relationships... the shots of the connected humans on the beach are evidence of it: Jin-Sun (who looks away worried and distracted), Claire-Aaron, Eko-Charlie over religion, Hurley and Libby playing shadows, Sawyer without Kate and having to content with Vincent, Bernard and Rose and ending with Jack and Kate.

Especially between the latter relations a transference can be made... We've known Rose and Bernard to bicker before, but this epi shows a basis for it. It certainly wasn't fair towards Bernard of Rose to go against him so publically. But that surely was her intent. She wanted to dissuade as many people as she could to join Bernard in making the SOS sign, and that is the reason why she didn't do it more privately. And I guess a part of it was a bit of payback for secretely hauling her to a healer and then use the "for me" blackmail trick.

Actually, I was very annoyed with Bernard over that... I thought it was incredibly selfish of him to organize that healing, and even when it's clear how much this hurt Rose emotionally when they arrive he still beggs her to do it for him, because he can't not try. Hey, man, she's the one who's dying and having to live with that idea for only such a short time! Whatever you're gong through since you've known, it ain't a tenth of what she already went through.
I totally understand why she lied to him about being healed.

Rose being healed was a big reveal though in S2... Up until then it seemed as if only Locke had been healed. BTW That's not something Locke knows about really, does he: that he isn't the only one. He never knew Mikhail came back from the dead. Will Naomi remain "dead"? What a shocker for Locke if she isn't!

Trading:
So, Jack thinks he can do a trade. An idea fitting Jack: the gambling and all. AL gives him the gun she had from Sayid who got it from Charlie who must have gotten it from Sawyer, or Charlie kept one gun for himself when Locke moved the guns in Long Con (based on Sawyer being stumped that a gun is in the running).
BTW Sawyer was a bit cocky there thinking Jack was there to request Sawyer to come along with him. But both he and Kate were surprised that Jack wanted to ask Kate. Well, based on the last hike out there, that's understandable.
Puppy Kate can't be more overjoyed! Just like in the old days, huh Kate? Not really. As always Jack is considering how much he'll put Kate in danger. Very sound reasoning (well, actually they did want Jack and Kate), but hardly romantic muse in Kate's ears. Can't blame her, because he told it as distanced and as calculated as possible. Actually, I think this is the first time that Kate is in company with Jack and gets the chance to not see him in her idealized puppy view. Perhaps for the first time she can see his flaws and annoying habbits while they don't reflect too much on her personally: cockily assuming she'll be a lousy shot, shouting to nobody in the jungle, stubborn, ... And of course coupled with the stuff that in her eyes means he isn't interested: not asking her along for a romantic "let's have an adventure together" hike, not asking her first, not making any moves on her during the net, lying about the shower because he didn't want to let her in on Henry before that, and ignoring her advice. Jack's friendly enough to her on the trip, but nothing more than that...
So, combining all that information in Kate's mind when she's sitting at the fire with Jack, she's thinking, "I'm nothing more than a friend to him. He isn't interested," and to cushion the hurt her mind's not on the train of "what did I do wrong," but "perhaps golden boy is not all that shiny." She's obviously irritated by some of Jack's behaviour, and this is the first time. Now she feels even more stupid about the kiss, and thinks of it as a "mistake", rather than her making a fool of herself to Jack. She means it when she's sorry she kissed him in several ways: sorry that in her mind she pushed herself onto him, sorry that she thought he was SUPER when he clearly isn't (nobody is, Kate).
But Jack always does the opposite of Kate's assumptions: he tells her he isn't sorry about it.
Blah, and as always they get interrupted when it starts to become personal...

BTW, we see a Jack who's being ironic about himself: I was never good at the bedside manner thingy, they didn't want me either, when I get my voice back so I can shout some more... He's admitting his flaws and making jokes about it.

Ben's tricks (lockdown, having Locke see the map, making him doubt whether he pushed the button) are doing its work: Locke has enough of the Swan, it isn't his button anymore... now all he needs is something that in Locke's eyes confirms his growing disbelief.

This is our very first episode featuring two background characters in a flashback. It won’t happen again until Expose which featured our favorite characters. Anyway, remember that time when Nikki and Paulo…? :nanabobo:

During the first scene in the hatch, the camera is positioned at an interesting angle. You can see the clock flipping down to the two minute mark, but that isn’t all. This is the first time we can see a speaker above the clock and there’s also a strange black and white almost bull’s-eye circle on the dome just above the speaker. I’m sure it doesn’t mean anything, but it’s the first time I’ve ever seen it. Anyone know what the bull’s-eye thingy is?

Jack’s plan to trade Ben for Walt actually wasn’t such a bad idea, but as we know, it was doomed to failure thanks to the Others snaring Michael. He was their wild card, because they not only used him to get Ben back, but they also used him to capture Jack, Sawyer, and Kate.

The way Bernard and Rose met was pretty cool. It was one of those “they were meant for each other” moments like when Sun and Jin literally bumped into each other.

Haha, we’ve got our first Frogurt reference in this episode. Who coulda guessed that little pipsqueak would take three or four flaming arrows to the chest in Season Five in the second most awesome redshirt death? :D

That’s a beautiful shot of the falls in the restaurant. How romantic of Bernard to propose near that view. I liked it so much I made it my avatar for this episode.

Bernard: “Five months is long enough, because I knew after five minutes.” – Wow, what a line! :)

Bernard to Eko: “I think I liked you better when you just hit people with your stick.”
Charlie to Eko after Bernard leaves: “I like you just the way you are.” :rotfl:

Ben’s smile in reaction to Locke shouting about the button was simply eeeeeeeevil. If there’s one man Ben loves to screw with, it’s Locke.

Bernard indicates a lava field two miles inland. This is a very early hint of volcanic activity which is confirmed in The Man Behind the Curtain during Ben’s Dharma flashback.

Poor Bernard; he dooms his own project with poor management skills. The dentist should’ve taken some business classes. Maybe he would’ve faired better.

Bernard’s rather touching gesture of marrying Rose despite knowing she didn’t have long to live is later contrasted by his arguably selfish desire to save Rose’s life by bringing her to Australia for their honeymoon. As she said, she’s made peace with what’s happening to her. This is a conflict I know pretty well. My significant other went through cancer in 2007 and it was a purely hellish year. I wanted to do something, anything to help, but in the end all I needed to do was give my support. It’s all we can do in those situations. So I know how Bernard feels. It’s impossible to sit by and watch someone you love deteriorate. If you can gain control of the situation (even if you’re selfishly fooling yourself) you go for it.

Jack brings up the fact that the Others didn’t want Kate. They had her at gunpoint and then let her go. Jack also mentions that they didn’t want him either. This is very ironic because Jack and Kate, as well as Sawyer (who was also there in The Hunting Party) were all on the list Klugh gives to Michael. Why didn’t the Others just grab them when they had a chance? Ben hadn’t even been captured at that point in time. He needed to get the tumor operated on. Why did he get himself captured? Was it really to meet John and see the inside of the hatch? What was the point of waiting when they had what they wanted back as far as The Hunting Party? The writers either didn’t think this through or Ben had a different game plan in regards to getting into the Swan and passing himself off as a man named Henry Gale. :hammersel

Jack and Kate – caught in a net! :nanabobo:

Jack shoots the rope in his first attempt. What are the odds of that? :rolleyez:

Not only do we get the reveal that the Island healed Rose of cancer, but we also learn that she saw Locke in a wheelchair in the airport. This healing phenomenon links their characters in an intriguing way. They were also the two most prominent characters who sat quietly by themselves shortly after the crash. Back then we thought it may’ve just been due to shock and we were right. It would be a shock, a wonderful shock to be healed like they were.

Isaac, the faith healer: “There are certain places with great energy – certain spots on the earth like where we are now. Perhaps this energy is geological, magnetic, or perhaps it’s something else. And when possible, I harness this energy and give it to others.” – This is a mind-blowing piece of dialogue after the stuff we learned about geographical hotspots from Mrs. Hawking in Season Five during 316. As we learned in that episode, there are many hotspots on the earth that relate to the unusual energies of the Island. Thanks to this knowledge, and Isaac’s dialogue, we know one of these spots is that part of Australia. Another intriguing tie-in is Hurley’s claim that, “Austrailia’s the key to the whole game,” in reference to risk during The Shape of Things to Come. Will Australia play into the endgame during Season Six? We’ll have to see. :scratchch

I wonder if Malkin (assuming he’s not a fraud which is debatable) used the same method as Isaac. I wonder if he harnessed the energy of these hotspots to see the future – to see Claire’s destiny.

The revolving camera angle around Jack while he was shouting at the Others in the jungle was pretty cool.

Once Bernard knows the truth, he abandons his attempts to get off the Island and swears to Rose that they’ll never leave. They’ll go on to live happily in the seventies for three years during Season Five. Who knows if we’ll ever see them again. If we don’t, that’s fine though, because all they wanted was to be together and they got it.

We saw a little flicker of our old Season One Locke when Ana Lucia asks where he went and he responds that he was just stretching his legs. The very next thing he does is go into the computer room and draw a sketch of the blast door map. He couldn’t do this before, but leaving the hatch, even for a small amount of time, seems to have helped him regain focus. He’s even smiling as he draws the map.

Awww, Sawyer showed a little love to Vincent at the end. :)

That was a very dramatic surprise with Michael showing up in the jungle. It was a bit reminiscent to when Claire returned after her abduction.

You know, even though this centered on two background characters, I felt it was a refreshing change of pace. I love the dynamic between Rose and Bernard. I also love the fact that despite only being married for a teeny amount of time, they really do act like a couple who’ve been together for decades.

I love Bernard and Rose and it was good to find out their background. I found it interesting that when we saw them they were sorting out and stacking food. Rose stated that they were getting too comfortable and they should be doing more to try and find a way off the island. By the middle of S5 they had built themselves a comfortable dwelling, with plenty of food, and were fully determined to stay there until they died.

I still haven't found out why Sawyer said "I say Pasadena" when he declined to help Bernard with his SOS - does anyone have a clue ? !

Sawyer calling Jack Dr. Giggles - possibly the best nickname ever ! :rotfl:

Jack can be incredibly spiteful where Sawyer is concerned but its like water off a duck's back - or is it. "I'm not inviting you, I'm inviting Kate. And I've already got a gun, but thank you for offering." Kate is very smug and wastes no time telling Jack she was glad he beat him at poker. The net scene was quite uncomfortable, lucky Jack's a good shot.

Back to Bernard and Rose - Rose thinks they should talk to Jack first about building the SOS sign. Bernard asks why - "Jack is not the President, he's a doctor".

Stick with Vincent, Sawyer - he'd be a lot less trouble than the girls !

These episodes seem to be passing me by, maybe cause I know whats coming up.

Saying that I felt the same way when these aired, nicely told, but filler, especially when you have characters like Eko & Ana Lucia being used as bit parts.

Has Sayid even been in the last 2 episodes? I mean even for 1 line?
No
