LOST. Season 4 – Episode 1: Our Mutual Friend
Ext. Pacific Ocean. Large freighter Deck. Day
Flash in.
[We open on a classic LOST scene, an eye blinking and the pupil dilating.]
[We’re looking out at the wide expanse of Ocean that is the South Pacific Ocean, the soft hum of an engine along with the sound of waves crashing against the freighter break the otherwise peaceful environment. We pan out and we are now looking over the shoulder of the owner of the eye who is looking out at the beautiful site, he is smoking a large cigar.]
Man (O.S)
– Captain?
[The man with the cigar turns around, we see his face, nobody we recognize. The other man is called Nickoly.]
Captain
– Yes?
Nickoly (O.S.)
– We’ve got an incoming call.
[The captain takes his cigar out and tosses it over the side of the ship. We turn 180 degrees and see Nickoly at a door, the captain follows him through and down a claustrophobic corridor. We follow him through, we pass a door with Bob Marley music flooding out of it. The captain pauses at the door.]
Captain
– Turn it off, Dawson!
[The captain follows Nickoly through into a large room full of computers and radars with a large window looking out over the deck, a phone is ringing. Out of the large window we see 2 helicopters, with space for a third, there is also several small boats on the right hand side. The Captain goes over and picks up the phone.]
Captain
– Minkowsky? Hello? (Beat)
[Then we hear a familiar voice.]
Jack
– Who is this?
Minkowsky
– Who is this?
Jack
– My name is Jack Shepard. Are you, are you on the boat, the freighter?
Minkowsky
– How’d you get this channel?
Jack
– Naomi. Naomi told us about you’re search team, about the boat.
[Minkowsky looks surprised.]
Minkowsky
– Naomi? You found her? Where is she? Who are you?
Jack
– I’m one of the survivors of Oceanic Flight 815. Can you get a fix on our location?
Minkowsky
– Hell yeah we can!
(He nods at Nickoly, who leaves the room. The Bob Marley music cuts out.)
Just hold tight, we’ll be right there.
[Minkowsky hangs up the phone and looks at it. He then tosses it at Nickoly who just entered the room again.]
Minkowsky
- Get a fix on that. That’s where we’re going.
Nickoly
–Yes Sir.
[He leaves but there is still someone at the door.]
Minkowsky
– We found your friends.
Man (O.S.)
– What? How did you-?
Minkowsky
– Someone just called. They found Naomi, they say they’re survivors of Oceanic 815. You wouldn’t know anything about that would you?
[Nickoly enters again.]
Nickoly
– We’ll be there in 5 minutes.
[Minkowsky nods at him.]
Minkowsky (to the man at the door)
– Get your stuff ready.
Man (O.S.)
– And Walt?
Minkowsky
– He’s coming too.
[We now see the man at the door is Michael, he is cleanly shaven now and he has had a haircut.]
LOST
[We now cut to the dark screen and as we move through the “O” of LOST we:]
Flash to. Ext. The Beach. Day.
[Fast paced, dramatic music is played as three people run through a flat clearing in the jungle, they are armed with large rifles. We see what they are running towards, a helicopter is landing in the clearing, people inside are taking cover from being fired at. Someone inside is yelling at the pilot to move.]
[The scene now blurs in the style of one of Desmonds flashes. Now we see Michael cowering from Sawyer.]
Kate:
No don’t!
Michael:
Stop!
[He has blood all over his face.]
[We go forward to a man hitting Sayid with the butt of his gun. And then another image of one of the windows of the Looking Glass Station cracking and water pouring in. Another image of Charlie floating dead at the window and of Claire on the beach crying.]
[We now go to Desmond in reality bashing against the window looking at Charlie.]
Desmond
– Charlie! No!
(Beat)
- Damn it.
[We now see the whole flash fast and then a close up of Desmonds face. He’s just had the flash. He realises he needs to leave. He runs over to the diving equipment. A crack on the window. He puts the diving mask on his head and jumps into the moon pool.]
[Cut to. Desmond exploding out of the water. He takes the mask off.]
Desmond
– Damn it, Charlie.
[Cut to. Hurley sat on the beach, he’s holding a piece of Coconut. He eats the remainder of it and then throws the skin away, he’s staring at the horizon waiting for something. A beer gets thrown at him.]
Hurley
– I’m not drinking that.
[Sawyer sits down next to him.]
Sawyer
– Why not?
Hurley
– It’s flat dude, and besides you don’t know how long it’s been there.
Sawyer
– I know its beer.
[He takes a swig of his own beer.]
Hurley
– They’re not back yet?
Sawyer
– Who?
Hurley
– Charlie and Desmond.
(Beat)
- Don’t you care at all?
Sawyer
– They’re fine.
Hurley
– You don’t know that.
[Further down the beach, we see Sayid laughing along with Jin and Bernard. (Sayid laughing? That’s right. They have no idea what’s coming.) But now we concentrate on Juliet walking over.]
Sawyer
– Hey there! D’you want a can?
[He offers her a can of Dharma’s own.]
Juliet
– No thanks.
[She sits down]
Juliet (cont.)
– You think it tastes bad? You should have tasted it when it wasn’t flat.
(Beat)
- Do you think they’ve reached the tower by now?
Sawyer
– Sure. Why not?
[Jin, Bernard and Sayid walk over smiling; they are carrying the crates of beer.]
Bernard
– We’re going to hide this in the jungle somewhere so the others don’t get any, so take what you want now.
[Sawyer stands up and takes a whole crate from Sayid. He gives him a wide grin.]
Sawyer
– I’m guessing I won’t see these again if you get to hide them?
[Sayid grabs Sawyers arm.]
Sawyer
– Hey!
Sayid
– Shhhh! Listen!
Hurley
– I hear it to.
[They all stare at the ocean, slowly the sound of a helicopter grows. Finally they see it, it’s getting larger and closer fast.]
Jin
– Rescue?
[They put the crates down and Hurley and Juliet stand up. The helicopter passes over their heads and lands a little inland.]
Bernard
– Did you see where that landed?
Sayid
– Lets go.
[He’s still got a rifle around his shoulder and he heads off towards the edge of the jungle.]
Juliet
– Wait. You don’t know who that is.
Sawyer
– Get bent lady, that’s rescue over there.
Juliet
– I wouldn’t be so sure.
Sayid
– Okay, I’ll go ahead and check it out, wait here.
[Sawyer reaches for his pants and takes out a pistol.]
Sawyer
– I’m coming too.
Sayid
– Okay then.
[They move off.]
Cut to. Sea. Desmonds Boat. Dusk
[We see Desmond clamber onto the boat it rocks and he falls into it. He takes off the diving gear and places it down. He spot’s Charlie’s note. He grabs the cable and starts to pull the boat back to shore. Shot of the boat moving past]
[FLASHBACK]
Desmond (O.S.)
– Let me buy you dinner.
Cut to. Ext. Outside Café. Day
Libby
– No-
Desmond
– Please, let me.
Libby
– No, really, it’s fine.
Desmond
– It’s the least I can do, please.
[Thunder is heard.]
Libby
– Okay, then. Tonight?
Desmond
– Yes-
– No, I can’t-
– I don’t have a car.
Libby
– I’ll pick you up then.
Desmond
- You don’t know where I live.
[It starts raining, as Libby realises she puts up her umbrella. She reaches in her pocket takes out a shopping list and an almost blunt pencil. She writes down a number.]
Libby (Handing Desmond the paper)
- Ring me when you get a car.
[She quickly turns and walks away. Desmond is left there in the rain. Close up of the note with the phone number with rain drops landing on it.]
Cut to. The Beach. Afternoon
[Jin is waist deep in a grave; he shovels out one more load of dirt and then climbs out. We see other open graves around.]
Juliet
[climbing out of another]
That’ll do.
[Jin and Bernard begin to put the bodies into the graves.]
[Further down the beach Hurley is wiping blood off the front of the van. He looks up at the sea. He then moves over to the graves.]
Hurley
Hey, guys. Do you think we ought to, you know? Light a fire, or something. For the boat?
Juliet
Good idea, I’ll help you get some wood.
[The sun is slowly setting on the horizon behind them and storm clouds are gathering far off and it’s a raging storm.]
Cut to. The Jungle. Dusk
[It’s almost pitch black in the jungle now but we can still hear the sea. We see the faint outline of Sayid and Sawyer walking a little bit away from each other, with their guns in their hands. Suddenly we hear gunfire coming from a little way in front of them. They both stop dead and crouch down.]
Sawyer (whispered)
The helicopter?
[Sayid shakes his head. They keep moving through the jungle. Finally they see some lights in front of them. They reach a grassy opening, the one from Desmond’s Vision. The helicopter is there, the source of the lights, its pretty much dark out there now. Sawyer and Sayid share nervous glances, as two men leave the helicopter, they are dressed completely in black and they are holding large assault rifles. They move over to three dead men, the men from the vision.]
Gunman 1
Bastards. They shot Owen.
Gunman 2
Who are they?
[The first gunman leans down and checks out one of the men. They are dressed in casual clothes, the gunman takes a walkie off the body. He shows it to the other guy.]
Gunman 2
Pass it here.
[He takes the walkie and turns it on.]
Hello?
[There’s no answer.]
Gunman 2
It’s broken.
Pilot (O.S.)
Jesus Christ!
[The pilot has come out of the helicopter and has seen the 3 ‘others’ and another guy in black, obviously Owen. The Pilot is also dressed in black. He checks Owen’s pulse. The second gunman turns round.]
Gunman 2
He’s dead. They killed him.
[He gestures at the ‘others’.]
Pilot
Are they dead?
Gunman 1
Yeah, they’re dead.
Pilot
Who are they?
Gunman 2
To hell if I know.
[Sayid moves over to Sawyer.]
Sayid
I’m not sure about this.
Sawyer
We’ve got to try something.
[The wind picks up rustling through the trees, is that whispering? It creeps out Sayid and Sawyer as well as the men from the helicopter.]
Gunman 1
I don’t like this whole situation.
[The Pilot moves back to the helicopter.]
Pilot
I’ll ring Nickoly.
[Suddenly a crack of lightning illuminates the jungle around the men. It’s too dark to tell but you wouldn’t be able to see light even if it was day; the clouds above would cover the sun. Sawyer and Sayid see this as a time to strike. Sayid jumps out at the two armed men and Sawyer with his handgun goes for the pilot in the helicopter. Sawyer acts first and sneaks up behind the pilot hitting him in the back of the head with his gun. Sayid gets close to the other men, brandishing his gun.]
Sayid
Get down. Drop your weapon.
[The gunman drops his gun and puts his hands behind his head. Unfortunately the other gunman is standing behind Sayid, Sayid turns in time to be hit in the face with the butt of the assault rifle. He falls down unconscious. The two gunmen now go towards the helicopter where Sawyer is inside searching around in papers. In the dim light we see Sawyer is holding sheets of paper with a profile of Desmond, he looks at another sheet, it’s Kate, another is Jack. There is a whole file on everyone who was on the island, we see Eko, Sawyer, Sayid, Charlie, Claire and all the others even Danielle. But he doesn’t have much time to look as the two gunmen have their guns pointed at him.]
Gunman 1
Don’t move.
[Sawyer reaches for his pistol which is lying next to him.]
Gunman 1
Don’t think about it.
Cut to. Ext. Beach. Night
[Desmond clambers off the boat not forgetting to grab Charlie’s note.]
[Further down the beach, Hurley, Juliet, Jin and Bernard are sitting around the fire.]
Desmond (O.S.)
[noticing the holes in the ground and the ruined shelters]
What the hell happened here, brother?
[Hurley gets up, Jin follows suit.]
Hurley
Desmond!
[He gives Desmond a bear hug, Jin pats him on the back.]
Hurley
Where’s Charlie?
Desmond
He-
He saved us.
Hurley, he’s dead.
[Hurley falls to the floor and stares at the fire.]
Hurley
How’d it happen?
Desmond
He drowned, he saved us.
The others aren’t back?
Juliet
No.
Desmond
I saw a helicopter pass overhead.
Juliet
Sawyer and Jarah went to check it out about 15 minutes ago.
Desmond
What?
Rescue?
What are you still doing here?
Bernard
She says that it might not be what we think it is.
Cut to. Ext. Helicopter Clearing. Night
[Sawyer and Sayid are kneeling down with their hands behind their back. It was only yesterday Sayid was in the same situation.]
Gunman 2
You still ain’t talking are you?
[He wipes his forehead with a handkerchief, and then hits Sawyer with the back of his hand, Sawyer falls back.]
Sayid
Who are you people?
Gunman 2
Shut up. Speak when I ask you to speak. Comprende?
Sayid
You’re wasting your time.
[The Gunman knees Sayid in the face, making Sayid fall back next to Sawyer, his nose bleeding. This guy is insane.]
[The second gunman walks over to the helicopter where the first gunman is helping the pilot.]
Sayid
Get up.
You need to warn the others, I’ll stay here and keep them occupied as long as I can.
Sawyer
We’ve come along way.
Sayid
I’ll meet up with you soon.
Go now.
[Sawyer nods and gets up reluctantly. Still with his hands behind his back he races for the cover of the trees.]
[Sawyer watches as Sayid rises to his knees again. The Pilot begins to walk over.]
Pilot
Where’s the other one?
The Redneck!
Gunman 2
He’s right there.
[The two gunmen run to his side and notice Sayid on his own.]
Gunman 2
Shit!
Gunman 1
You let him get away, you idiot.
[The Pilot walks over and takes out a knife.]
Pilot
I’ll tell you what, if you tell us where your friend has gone and where the others are hiding, we’ll let you go.
Sayid
That man over there, the one that hit me, he couldn’t get me to talk. What makes you think you’ll be any different.
Pilot
Because if you don’t tell me where your friend’s at, I’m going to kill you.
But if you do tell me, I guarantee you’ll see Nadia again.
Sayid
Wha-
What did you say?
Pilot
Nadia. That’s her name isn’t it? If you tell me where Desmond is, you’ll see her again.
[Sayid spits blood onto the pilots’ shoe. He wipes it off.]
Pilot
That wasn’t very nice, Sayid.
I’m going to say this again, it’s not you we want and we don’t care what happens to you, so tell us where your friends are or I swear I will kill you.
[He takes the knife and places it on his neck.]
Pilot (cont.)
I’m going to count to 3.
Cut to. Ext. Jungle. Night
[Desmond running through the jungle, trees blurring our view of him.]
[FLASHBACK]
[Desmond in a clean kitchen with polished, marble surfaces. He walks into another part of the room, it’s full of wooden bookshelves and many old looking books. He moves over to one and pulls out Our Mutual Friend by Charles Dickens.]
Libby (O.S.)
That was one of David’s favourite.
Have you read it?
Desmond
Sorry?
[He puts the book back. Libby steps into view holding two glasses of iced water. He walks over to her and takes one of the glasses.]
Libby
Our Mutual Friend?
Have you read it?
Desmond
Yes.
[Beat]
Sorry?
No, I haven’t read it, not yet any way.
Libby
Is something wrong?
[Desmond snaps out of whatever he was thinking about.]
Desmond
No, why would there be anything wrong?
You’re giving be a boat.
Libby
Yes. Let me get the stuff together for you.
[Desmond follows Libby into an office, she rummages through some drawers.]
Desmond
So, Elizabeth, how’d you get this house?
Fairly grand, isn’t it?
Libby
Well it was left to me in David’s will, my husband. He was a lucky stockbroker, I guess. I never really understood anything he did, or said really.
I’m a Psychologist, now, it pays the bills.
Desmond
I bet.
I always wanted to be a doctor, but God had another plan.
How’d you get to be a psychologist anyway?
Libby
Erm…(It appears as if she’s dodging his question)
Here it is!
[Libby passes Desmond an envelope, he looks inside. There are some papers and a key.]
Desmond
Thank you
Libby
It’s what he would have wanted.
Cut to. Ext. Jungle. Night
[It’s now raining heavily, but Desmond is still running through the jungle shouting for Sawyer and Sayid. Finally there is an answer.]
Sawyer
Hello!
Desmond
Who’s there?
Sawyer
Sawyer. Desmond?
Desmond
Aye.
[Sawyer walks up to Desmond.]
Sawyer
You have to go. Warn the others.
Desmond
What?
Sawyer
The helicopter. That isn’t rescue.
Desmond
What are you talking about?
They said Sayid went with you, where is he?
Sawyer
He’s still there, 3 guys were in the helicopter. They tied us up, Sayid told me to go warn the others.
Desmond
Your not tied up.
Sawyer
I got free. The others have got to move off the beach and you’ve got to warn Jack and the guys at the radio tower before the rescue boats arrive.
Desmond
Me?
Where are you going?
Sawyer
I’m going back for Sayid.
[He shakes the gun at Desmond.]
Desmond
No, you warn them, I’ll go get Sayid.
Give me the gun? You’ve been bashed up enough today.
Sawyer
Dammit. Here.
[He gives him the gun.]
Sawyer (cont.)
Just remember there are 3 of ‘em. Okay?
Just follow the stream up there.
[Without looking back, Sawyer heads off again towards the beach, but before Desmond can move to rescue Sayid another Flash hits him]
[It’s day, there are 3 boats moving towards them from a large freighter out at sea. Again it’s Michael cowering from Sawyer with blood around his mouth, Kate is there. Images of Hurley and Jin sat together staring at him. Some gunshots and now it’s night, 3 dead men on the ground by a helicopter, Sayid lying there unconscious perhaps dead, more people; dressed in black, one running to the tree line on the opposite side of the clearing the other two lying limply in the helicopter.]
[Back in reality, Desmond loads the gun and runs off towards the stream.]
Cut to. Ext. Clearing. Night
[A horrible silence lies in the air, as the rain stops suddenly, Desmond approaches the clearing, he can see the helicopter but nothing else. He crouches and tries to get a better look at things but he can’t. His heavy breathing and the distant sound of waves crashing cut through the air like a knife. The storm has died down a little but there is no sign of the moon.]
[A sound of a branch breaking behind Desmond is heard. We cannot see what is there. Rustling, and then a white Labrador is seen in the undergrowth. It’s Vincent.]
[He moves past without even acknowledging that Desmond is there.]
Desmond
Hey.
[Desmond, with his gun close, moves slowly into the clearing. 5 bodies are on the floor, 2 in the helicopter. The pilot and the second of the two gunmen are in the helicopter, we can’t see much because of the dark but we can tell they are dead and they died a bloody death. Only one man he recognises. He runs over to Sayid who is not awake.]
Desmond
Hey, get up.
Brother?
[One of the other bodies groans it’s the first gunman, he see’s Desmond with the gun and gets up, he makes a break for the opposite tree line. Desmond runs after but he can’t this guy’s fast, he shoots at him but misses. He moves over to the helicopter, checks to see if the occupants are dead, they are without a doubt, as are all the other bodies except for Sayid he may still have a chance. Desmond spot’s the file of names and takes it. He walks over to Sayid.]
Desmond
Time to go.
[He lifts Sayid up onto his shoulders, it’s a challenge but he does it.]
Cut to. Ext. Beach. Hurley’s Shelter. Dawn
[The sun slowly starts to rise on the horizon.]
[Sawyer opens the opening of Hurley’s shelter.]
Sawyer
Wake up!
[Hurley is already awake.]
Hurley
Where’ve you been?
Where’s Sayid?
And Desmond? He went to find you.
Sawyer
We’ve got to go now, I’m gonna tell the others.
And move the damn truck.
[Outside Sawyer moves towards the others tents, Jin was already up and was moving over to Sawyer.]
Sawyer
Yo Jin, we’re leaving.
Leaving, move.
Right now.
Jin
Leave? Sun?
[Sawyer ignores him and moves towards Bernard’s shelter.]
[Hurley gets into the Van and backs it up into the jungle out of sight. When he comes out of the jungle Sawyer, Jin, Bernard and Juliet are talking close by.]
Bernard
Well, where’s Sayid?
Sawyer
Desmond, he took my gun and went off to find him.
(Spots Hurley.)
Charlie’s not in his tent, where is he?
Hurley
He’s dead.
Sawyer
What?
Hurley
Charlie drowned, and Desmond knew.
Bernard
What do you mean, Desmond knew?
Sawyer
We’ll deal with it when we’re safe, but now there are people coming to this island. And from the looks of it they aren’t here to save the day.
Bernard
How’d you know?
Sawyer
Maybe because they tied me and Sayid up, and the fact that they had guns and they hit me in the back of the head with one!
Juliet
I told you.
Sawyer
Yes. You did. Got any other bright ideas?
Juliet
Ben will know what to do.
Sawyer
Ben? Ben will know what to do?
Juliet
He said all along that this island was in danger, that people were trying to get here, but I never believed him.
I guess he was right.
So. He was the only one who knew what was going to happen, so he’s the only one who’ll know what to do now.
Sawyer
Okay then.
Hurley
Where is he then?
Sawyer
What?
Hurley
If Ben knows what to do, we need to find him.
Bernard
Hurley’s right.
Sawyer
Wait, wait, wait. We’re trusting her?
Hurley
Who else do we trust, dude?
Sawyer
(turns to Juliet)
Lets go find Ben then.
Cut to. Ext. Jungle. Early Morning
[Desmond is making his way slowly through the jungle with Sayid over his shoulder and the file in his hand.]
Desmond
Bloody hell, what’ve you been eating?
[He sets Sayid down by the stream. He fills up a canteen, takes a swig and then tries to give some to Sayid.]
Desmond
You awake yet, brother?
[He opens his eyes.]
Sayid
Sawyer?
Desmond
No, he went back to warn the others, it’s Desmond. You took a good beating.
Sayid
There’s a man {cough} following us.
[Desmond looks around, he can’t see anyone.]
Desmond
I can’t-
Who is it?
Where?
Sayid
Up the stream, where we were.
Desmond
I can’t see anyone.
Sayid
Let’s keep going.
Desmond
Can you stand?
Sayid
Not without a hand.
[Desmond helps him up, and supporting him they continue to move down stream towards the water.]
[Soon from out of the undergrowth the Gunman jumps out, Desmond lets Sayid fall who picks himself up, Desmond moves out the way, the Gunman falls and raises his hands when Desmond brings the gun down against his head.]
[FLASHBACK]
Int. Car. Morning
[Looking out of Desmond’s car as he drives through a pair of large metal gates into a boat yard. He drives along looking at each boat finally he spot’s Elizabeth, a beautiful white yacht. He parks his car and climbs aboard. He moves downstairs and checks out the interior; opening the fridge he finds it full of food. He takes out a can of cola. He moves to the deck again running his hand along the edge and pretending to steer it at the wheel.]
Man (O.S.)
Hey there.
[Desmond looks down and standing beside the boat is a man, holding his breakfast in a paper bag, with a coffee cup in the other hand.]
Desmond
Hey, yourself.
Man
Who might you be?
Desmond
Desmond. And you?
Man
My name’s David. And that’s my boat.
[Back in the jungle.]
Sayid
Wait! Don’t shoot!
Desmond
I’m not a murderer.
[Desmond backs away from the gunman who gets up.]
Gunman
Can I-
Sayid
Who are you people?
Gunman
My name is Matham. Peter, Peter Matham.
Desmond
And what brings you to our little island, Peter?
Gunman
I was told to go down with the helicopter, and check the place out.
Sayid
Why are you even here?
Gunman
Do you know Naomi? I heard you found her?
Desmond
Yes. We did. In the jungle. She’s okay now.
You’re with the freighter?
Gunman
Yes.
[Desmond turns to Sayid but still keeps an eye on their captive.]
Desmond
Naomi said that Penny sent them. Penelope Widmore?
You know?
Sayid
Yes.
Desmond
Well, Charlie intercepted a call from her and she didn’t know anything about a boat.
Sayid
Where is Charlie?
Desmond
He was murdered.
Sayid
By who?
Desmond
The Russian. He swam down after us.
[Sayid takes the gun off Desmond.]
Sayid
If you don’t mind
Desmond
Go ahead brother.
Sayid
(turning to Peter)
You are coming with us.
Cut to. Ext. Beach. Day
[The others are still sat around.]
[Close on Hurley, Sawyer and Jin.]
[A long beat.]
Hurley
What are we doing?
[Sawyer turns, a little irritated.]
Sawyer
Don’t you listen at all?
We’re waiting here for Desmond and Sayid, then we’re going to find Ben.
Hurley
What about the others?
I’m sure Jin and Bernard want to get back to other guys.
Sawyer
Well Jin,
(gestures to Jin, who smiles at him awkwardly)
you and Bernard can stay here all you want, but when whoever was in that helicopter lands in some boats, on this beach, I don’t want to be here.
[Beat]
Sun and What-cha-ma-call her’ll be fine.
Hurley
It’s Rose, okay.
Sawyer
Whatever, Hugo.
Jin
Phone.
Hurley
What?
Jin
Phone!
Hurley
You know I can’t play charades.
Jin
No.
[Beat]
Phone. Sun.
Sawyer
He means use the walkie you got.
You’re out of luck Jackie, the walkie, the phone, it’s out of battery.
Hurley
Erm, not exactly.
Sawyer
What?
Hurley
I kinda, forgot about the walkie.
Sawyer
You serious?
[He takes the walkie out of his pocket.]
Hurley
Hello, Jack?
Are you there?
Jack?
Karl
Hello?
Hurley
Hey. Who’s this?
Karl
Karl.
[Hurley shrugs.]
Sawyer
Karl. You know? Youngish, Brown hair.
Hurley
Yeah. Way to narrow it down.
Karl
Hello?
Hurley
Yeah, hi. Is Jack there?
It’s Hurley, down at the beach.
Karl
No, he isn’t.
Hurley
What? Why? Where is he?
Karl
He went with Ben and Austen.
Hurley
Kate?
Karl
Yeah.
Hurley
Where’d they go?
Karl
Did rescue come?
[Juliet walks over and takes the walkie from out of Hurley’s hands.]
Hurley
Hey!
Juliet
Listen Karl. Ben was right.
Rescue didn’t come.
Karl
What do you mean?
What about the boat?
Juliet
Yes, there’s a boat and helicopters.
But they aren’t rescue.
They killed three people and tried to kill Ford and Jarah.
Karl
They might have misunderstood.
Juliet
No Karl.
I need you to go find Ben now.
Do you know where they are?
Karl
Yes. They’re-
Juliet
Go now and hurry, tell everyone to meet us at the temple.
You’ve got to take them there.
Karl
Okay.
Juliet
Give the walkie to Sun.
[Beat.]
Sun
Hello.
Juliet
Jin wants to speak to you.
[She passes the phone to Jin, who speaks Korean.]
[Juliet starts walking down the beach. Sawyer gets up and goes after her.]
Sawyer
The temple. What’s that?
Juliet
It’s a safe place.
We need to go quickly.
How long are they still going to be in the jungle?
Sawyer
I don’t know.
Juliet
We’re leaving the minute they get back.
Sawyer
Wait. Who put you in charge?
Juliet
Jack did.
[Beat]
When he phoned that freighter.
[Bernard walks over carrying a bag on one shoulder and the other rifle on his other shoulder.]
Bernard
Are we going yet?
Juliet
As soon as you friends in the jungle get back, yeah.
Sawyer
We’re going to “the temple.”
[Jin walks over holding the walkie, he gives it to Bernard.]
Jin
You. Rose.
Bernard
Hello?
Rose
Bernard?
[Their conversation drifts off, as we follow Jin into the jungle. He undoes his fly and goes to the toilet. After he is finished he spot’s 3 people moving towards him he makes out Sayid being supported by Desmond. The third man is tied up.]
Jin
Sayid.
(Turns to Peter.)
Who?
Sayid
We caught him trying to attack us in the jungle.
He’s one from the helicopter.
Jin
Rescue?
[Desmond shakes his head.]
[Hurley gets up and goes to help Sayid.]
Hurley
[To Sawyer, Juliet and Bernard.]
Guys, they’re back.
[Helps Sayid down.]
What happened? Who’s that?
Sawyer
That’s one of the guys who tied us up.
Sayid
It is.
Sawyer
There were 3 of them.
Desmond
Dead. He’s the only one who got out.
Sayid
He says in about half an hour the people from the ship will be arriving.
Juliet
By then we should be at the temple.
Sayid
No we can’t leave. We have to stop them.
Juliet
How?
[Sayid doesn’t have an answer.]
Juliet
Karl is going to take the others over to the temple.
So, our best bet is to go there to.
Sawyer
She’s right.
I don’t know what this temple is all about, but it’s bound to be safer then here.
Bernard
What about him?
[Gestures at Peter.]
We can’t take him with us, can we?
Sayid
If we leave him here, he’ll give them information about us.
Desmond
They already know a lot about us, mate.
[He hands Sayid the file, who starts looking through them.]
Sayid
Where did you get this?
Desmond
In the helicopter.
Hurley
Let me take a look at it.
[Hurley starts scanning through the names, whilst Sayid stands up awkwardly and confronts Peter.]
Sayid
Where did you get this? How do you know all about us?
Peter
Like I said I don’t know anything, the person you want to talk to is Minkowsky-
Sayid
Minkowsky?
Peter
He’s the Captain of the freighter.
But, then again, he’s not top of the pile either.
Sayid
Who made these files?
Peter
Various people, I suppose Michael was a lot of help.
Sawyer
Michael?
Peter
You know him?
Sawyer
Black guy? With a kid?
Peter
Yeah. How’d-
Sawyer
Where’d you find him?
Juliet
Enough. We need to leave. Now!
[Hurley is still looking at the files. Each file has a number attached to it. Sayid Jarah: 4815162340. Claire Liddleton: 4815162341. Hugo Reyes: 4815162342. It’s the numbers!]
Hurley
Woah, dude. They’re back.
[Close up of Desmond helping Sayid to his feet.]
[FLAHBACK.]
Int. Boat: ELIZABETH. Day
[Desmond is sat down at a small table. Whilst David is leaning against the fridge drinking his coffee.]
David
Elizabeth you say?
Libby?
Desmond
Yeah. She gave me the boat.
David
She’s got a cheek.
Desmond
What do you mean?
David
This is my boat. But she managed to weasel it out of me.
Desmond
I don’t understand. She told me you were dead.
David
[Laughing]
She did?
[Beat]
Did she tell you she’s a loon?
Desmond
What?
David
She spent a few years in a mental institute.
For a guy who got a boat from her, you really don’t know a thing about her.
Desmond
You weren’t married?
David
No. We were married.
But then she put herself in that place, so I couldn’t do anything except get a divorce.
I didn’t want to be with a mental.
[Beat.]
But it’s when she ‘recovered’ that she didn’t have a thing.
I got everything in the divorce. She didn’t need the house, or the money or the boat.
But when she comes out she tries to get it back.
Desmond
She told me-
David
I wouldn’t believe what she told you.
She took everything from me. Everything.
I was left with a single bedroom apartment and enough money to pay the rent.
Desmond
How?
David
Well she’s clever.
[Beat.]
But it was all hers, except this boat. This was mine.
She still managed to get it though.
Desmond
Well if it’s not yours, what are you doing here then?
David
Well, I figured she doesn’t know how to sail, so why would she be here. Right?
Sure as hell beats living like I do.
Desmond
So, is she a psychologist?
David
A psychologist!
No. She inherited all her money from her Daddy.
No doubt she could be, she did some time at medical school.
You ever hear of Geronimo Jackson?
Desmond
No.
David
Well they were big round here, especially in the south.
Libby’s dad was the lead singer, made stacks of cash.
Desmond
She said you earned the money.
That you were a stockbroker.
David
I am.
[Laughs]
That’s why I still live in a grotty little apartment in the city.
Never made any cash out of it.
Desmond
So, what?
David
I suppose if she gave you the key. It’s yours.
That’s if you know how to sail.
Desmond
Unfortunately for you, I do.
Cut to. Ext. Jungle. Day
[The jungle is fresh because of the recent storm, some of the trees still drip. Juliet leads Bernard, Jin, Desmond, Sayid, Hurley, Sawyer and Peter through the jungle.]
[Desmond and Sawyer are supporting Sayid on either side and Bernard is following Peter at gunpoint.]
Desmond
[To Peter.]
You wouldn’t know anyone called Widmore would you?
Peter
Charles Widmore?
I’ve heard of him, yeah. Never seen him though.
Sawyer
When you landed on the island. What were you doing? What’s your reason for travel?
Peter
I’ve already told you 20 times.
Sawyer
Well tell us again, I like the story.
Peter
I don’t know why we’re here; I was told it was a search and rescue. I was elected to go check out the island with 3 other people; all of who are dead now, I might add.
Sawyer
Go on.
Peter
We were attacked by 3 men, before we even had landed. They were with you I guess?
They shot my friend, but none of them escaped.
Then two more people attacked, you and the middle-eastern guy.
And now I’m your captive.
Sawyer
You forgot the bit about tying me and Sayid up.
Beating us.
Peter
You attacked us, what makes you so sure we aren’t here to rescue you?
As far as I’m concerned, I was.
Sayid
You are a liar.
Hurley
Calm down. All of you.
What if he is here to save us?
Sayid
He’s not. The man who was flying the helicopter, said he was only here for him.
[Gestures at Desmond.]
Hurley
Really?
Sayid
Yes
Desmond
I don’t know what is going on.
Hurley
Dude, Naomi was here for you and now these guys. Why do they want to find you?
Desmond
I don’t-
Peter
It wasn’t just you we were here for, there’s a whole group of people in that file.
Sayid
Then why did the pilot say he didn’t care about me, that he only wanted Desmond?
Peter
Maybe he was only saying that so you’d tell him where the others were.
Sayid
I’m tired of this.
[Sayid lunges at Peter tackling him and knocking him to the floor. He has his hands around Peters throat.]
Sayid
Where is Nadia?
Peter
[Choked.]
Who’s Nadia?
Sayid
Where is she?
[Desmond and Bernard lift Sayid off him.]
Desmond
Stop.
[Sayid pushes Desmond back who falls over.]
Sawyer
Sayid. Stop.
[He stops him.]
Sayid
He’s knows. He knows where she is.
[Peter gets up rubbing his neck.]
Peter
None of you deserve to get rescued.
You’re all mad.
Cut to.
[The same scene just a little later. Jin is supporting Sayid, he doesn’t need much help now. Sawyer and Bernard are talking with Peter at the front just behind Juliet who is thinking quietly to herself. At the back Desmond and Hurley are talking.]
Hurley
Did you know?
Desmond
Know what?
Hurley
That Charlie was going to drown.
Desmond
[After a long beat]
Aye.
Hurley
Why didn’t you stop it?
Desmond
I tried, I tried to stop it. And I had stopped it, again and again.
Charlie chose to die.
He saved us.
[Hurley nods at Peter.]
Hurley
Or not.
Desmond
I don’t think they’re all that bad, I think we might get home soon.
Hurley
Everybody is going mad, staying here. On this island.
I am. You were here for like 3 years.
You should be insane, throwing doo-doo at people and living on your own in a hole.
How’d you manage? You’ve been through a lot.
Desmond
Just the hope that one-day I might get back.
Hurley
I don’t blame you. For Charlie.
Desmond
Who said you did?
[FLASHBACK]
Int. Boat: ELIZABETH. Day
[Desmond on the phone, it’s ringing, no answer. Finally an answer machine.]
Desmond
Hi, it’s Desmond.
I keep missing you, but ring back if you get this.
Just want to thank you again for the opportunity.
Okay. Bye.
[He moves up onto the cabin, it’s a beautiful day outside and we discover he’s not at the boat yard anymore but he’s on the open sea.]
[The wind’s in his hair and he looks happy. He takes hold of the wheel and turns it slightly. A speed boat passes by.]
Desmond
[To himself.]
I’m going to win.
[Back on the island.]
Hurley
I don’t blame you. For Charlie.
Desmond
Who said you did?
Hurley
Well, if we’re gonna get rescued and all this, tying people up, trying murder each other, turns out to be some big mistake, then I want to make sure I start off on a clean slate.
[Sawyer walks over to them.]
Hurley
Hey Sawyer.
Sawyer
You really think that maybe it is rescue.
Desmond
I don’t know.
Sawyer
Well what ever, good or bad, I guess those boats will have reached the shore by now. Don’t you?
Bernard (O.S.)
Look out.
[Dramatic Music.]
[We see Peter grabbing Sayid, he isn’t tied up anymore. Sayid head butts him making him stumble back. Sayid pulls a handgun out of Jin’s back pocket, without him realising. But it’s too late, Peter’s already trying to stop him shooting, we don’t know who started it or who is the bad guy in this fight, but we do know the gun’s pointing now at Desmond.]
Hurley
Move!
[But its too late, the shot has been fired and Desmond is on the floor bleeding from the stomach.]
Cut to. Ext. Beach. Day
[Several boats have been moored on the beach. People are loading medical equipment and guns and other things we can’t quite make out off the boats and up the beach to the tree line. Some men dressed in black with assault rifles are checking each shelter for anyone.]
[We see Minkowsky, Michael and Walt get off one of the boats.]
[Nickoly runs down the beach to Minkowsky.]
Nickoly
There’s no one here sir.
Minkowsky
[turning to Michael]
Well?
Michael
I don’t know where they are. This is the beach. Are they all gone?
[Nickoly nods.]
Minkowsky
Do you know where exactly the transmission came from?
Nickoly
We’re not sure, but it was on higher ground somewhere to the south-east.
Minkowsky
Send the other chopper to loop the island, see if he can spot anyone.
I want the other one found, it didn’t land too far inland, send some guys in there.
Nickoly
Yes sir.
[He moves off down the beach.]
[Minkowsky gives Michael a bad look and then moves away himself leaving him and the boy alone.]
Michael
[whispered]
We have to get out of here.
When I tell you I want you to head to the tree’s.
Do you remember how to get to the caves from here?
Walt
Yeah, but Dad.
Michael
Just do as I say, there may be some people at the caves, I’ll meet you there as soon as I can get away.
Walt
But-
Michael
Quick, go. Go now.
Walt
Okay.
[He runs off towards the tree line.]
[Michael runs off down the beach in the opposite direction.]
Nickoly
Hey!
[Michael is quickly pursued by some of the gunmen. They run fast, but Michael is already too far down the beach. Soon we see him run into the jungle out of sight. Walt is already gone.]
Minkowsky
Let them run.
I want that Chopper found.
And once we get it we’ll find Shepard and Hume, and then we’ll get them back.
[The gunmen and Nickoly who are stood next to him are nodding in agreement.]
Well go on then.
[The gunmen then start to move towards the jungle in search of the other helicopter.]
Minkowsky
Did you call the chopper in?
Nickoly
It’s on its way.
There it is now.
[Another helicopter flies overhead, and over across the jungle. Out at sea close inland we see the freighter. With that image of the three small moored ships, and the freighter in the background and Minkowsky and Nickoly looking into the jungle we leave this episode.]
LOST
[I]© 2007 Seb Barendt
