It's recently come out that one of the new characters, apparently a Freighter crew member, is named Matthew Abaddon. Some earlier spoilers had given the character's name incorrectly as Matthew Stevens, but this has been corrected on Dark's site. There's another Stevens among the Freighter folk.
Abaddon is a Hebrew word meaning destruction. In Judeo-Christian thought (and derivative occult thought), he is a being closely associated with the place of punishment for the damned. Specific biblical references make him the angel of the abyss or of the bottomless pit. There's some confusion among various factions as to whether he is a demon, the leader of the demons (Satan), an unfallen angel doing the divine work of punishing the fallen, or the Messiah himself. However, the name most often is thought of as belonging either to Satan or a high-ranking servant of evil.
One reason I thought it appropriate to make special mention of this is because it dovetails nicely with another theory I've mentioned many times on the main Theories board: the Swan Hatch should be thought of as a type of bottomless pit.
-- I think it concealed a failed experiment that attempted to generate a black hole.
-- Like the biblical "bottomless pit," a special key was required to open it.
-- When it was opened, horrible things may have come out. Possibly including a boost to Smokey's power and aggression. Recall that he has killed twice that we've seen and each time was shortly after an incident at the Swan.
-- There's a tie to the warning on the Blast Door Map in Latin which translates into "Save yourselves from Hell." As I've mentioned elsewhere, that's a quote from the Latin warning issued toward the beginning of the film "Event Horizon," which refers to a failed experiment with a black hole that allows horrible entities to escape.
This suggests to me, at least, that Matthew Abaddon has some special tie-in to whatever was really going on inside the Swan. We know the Freighter folks have Desmond's name from somewhere but aren't really working for Penelope. Does this suggest that they were actually in contact with Kelvin, whom they have deduced has died?
