NEW YORK - "Shrek the Musical," the tale of a big green ogre, has a date on Broadway this fall.

A stage version of the popular DreamWorks Animation SKG feature will begin preview performances in November — with casting, theater and opening date to be announced.

The show, which has book and lyrics by David Lindsay-Abaire and music by Jeanine Tesori, will play an out-of-town tryout at Seattle's Fifth Avenue Theatre Aug. 14-Sept. 21.

"It's the plot of the first `Shrek' movie," said Jason Moore, who will direct the production. The first "Shrek" film was released in 2001, followed by

"Shrek 2" in 2004 and "Shrek the Third" last year.

"But because we are going deeper into the emotional lives and back stories of the characters, we reveal things about them that none of the movies revealed," he added.

Moore, who directed the hit musical "Avenue Q," has been involved with

"Shrek the Musical" for nearly three years. "We are building something from the beginning," the director said. "I like to be part of the development process. To have a wide-open canvas with good raw materials is a rare and
luxurious opportunity."

He said the music by Tesori, who wrote melodies for such diverse shows as

"Thoroughly Modern Millie" and "Caroline, or Change," has not only an epic orchestral feel but "some good rock and R&B. Jeanine's music has real guts to it."

Lindsay-Abaire wrote the Pulitzer Prize-winning drama "Rabbit Hole" as well as such comedies as "Fuddy Meers" and "Kimberly Akimbo."

"David is a word-puzzle man," Moore said. "So much about lyric writing is creating a puzzle and telling a story, which David already does brilliantly in his playwriting.

"As director, it's great for me because the tone in the book scenes and the tone in the lyrics are consistent — which often is something you are battling if you have two different people doing those jobs. You want to feel like that transition is seamless."

As for casting the lead role of Shrek, Moore said it's difficult because not only do you need a fine singer but someone who can make people laugh and feel for them.

"The character is tricky because he is an outsider and doesn't reveal himself to the world very easily," Moore explained. "He has purposely put himself away. So it requires an actor with a lot of nuance to get those kind of levels across."

I'm scared.

This seriously has "cheese" written all over it, and not the good kind (like "Xanadu").

Shrek was actually a recovering crack addict. Fiona was hardly a princess as she was in the tower as part of the federal witness protection program after testifying in an anime' pornography case.

You know, the first thing I thought of after watching Shrek was "man, this would be perfect for Broadway."

It might not be so bad. I've heard rumors of Christopher Sieber as "Prince Farquad" (which only kind of sucks because he's a 6 ft. man. How can he have a Napoleon complex???) and Celia Keenan-Bolger as "Fiona". Those are two people I would not mind seeing and could make the show worthwhile!

Hmm.

Tony Winner Sutton Foster to Star in Broadway's Shrek (http://www.playbill.com/news/article/114927.html)

Tony Award winner Sutton Foster will be part of the cast of Shrek The Musical, which is based on the William Steig book and the DreamWorks film and is scheduled to arrive on Broadway in November following an out-of-town tryout.

The New York Post reports that the current star of Young Frankenstein will play Fiona in the stage musical. Playbill.com previously reported that Christopher Sieber (Spamalot, The Triumph of Love) will also be part of the Shrek cast. No official casting has been announced.

Shrek, as previously announced, will make its world premiere at The 5th Avenue Theatre: The musical will play the Seattle venue August 14-Sept. 21. The production will then head to Broadway for a November debut at a theatre to be announced.

The musical features book and lyrics by Pulitzer Prize winner David Lindsay-Abaire and music by Jeanine Tesori. Avenue Q's Jason Moore will direct. The creative team will also include set and costume designer Tim Hatley, lighting designer Hugh Vanstone, choreographer Josh Prince and music director Tim Weil.

Shrek The Musical, DreamWorks Animation's first venture in legitimate theatre, is being produced by DreamWorks Theatricals (Bill Damaschke, president) and Neal Street Productions, Ltd. (principals Sam Mendes and Caro Newling).

Sutton Foster received a Tony nomination for her work in the hit musical The Drowsy Chaperone at the Marquis Theatre. The singing actress starred in the title role of Thoroughly Modern Millie and received the Tony, Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle and Astaire awards for that performance. She also received a Tony nomination for her performance in Little Women, and her other Broadway credits include roles in Les Misrables, Annie, The Scarlet Pimpernel and Grease!. Foster's regional and tour credits include What the World Needs Now, Dorian, Three Musketeers, South Pacific and The Will Rogers Follies. Foster currently plays Inga in the new Mel Brooks musical Young Frankenstein at the Hilton Theatre.

Yeah I read that somewhere. There's also something somewhere saying Seiber's playing Shrek...

Lemme go see if I can find it.

ETA: I can't find it! :(

What does that mean for Young Frankenstein? i know people move in and out of shows but...

When we saw The Little Mermaid we were talking to some people in the parking garage elevator one group had seen Phantom and the other couple had seen Young Frankenstein. The Young Frankenstein couple was less than impressed. The mom from the Phantom family was totally wasted and nearly fell out of the elevator (the dad drove home... I hope) but they all enjoyed the show and the YF couple said that Phantom was better than what they saw that night.

Maybe I can get all the kids and even my husband (who is musical phobic, but has to see at least one a year since my daughter love to be in the school shows) to go see Shrek.

It's bound to be a family friendly affair. :)

Sutton Foster probably has a contract for Young Frankenstein for a certain amount of time, and I guess it expires in time for her to go straight to Shrek.

I've heard a lot that Young Frankenstein is terrible. Shame. Because if they weren't there, I'm sure the Off-Broadway "Frankenstein" - which was FANTASTIC - would have survived. :(

But yeah, what Xan said. Sutton's contract is probably going to expire.

HEY BUDDY SHREK3 IS A VERY FANTASTIC MOVIE.Shrek is a large, green, intimidating ogre who acts as an eponymous hero. He loves peace and solitude and lives in a swamp yet he befriends Donkey, an excitable, hyperactive donkey. Although his background is something of a mystery, it is assumed that despite these traits, Shrek has always been an ogre of the non-hostile kind. In the first Shrek movie, during a conversation with Donkey, he laments that people "judge me before they even know me. That's why I'm better off alone," implying that he became a recluse after trying and failing to find acceptance among others.

In Shrek the Third it is revealed Shrek has a father who tried to eat him as Shrek stated, "I should have seen it coming. He used to bathe me in barbecue sauce and put me to bed with an apple in my mouth." In Far Far Away Idol, he sang "What I Like About You" by The Romantics with Fiona. According to Shrek, ogres do not celebrate holidays.

Shrek lives in Ogre Swamp. The swamp, like any other swamp, is green and murky. The swamp contains small and big ponds of muddy water and also has geysers that squirt out mud. The swamp contains the living quarters of Shrek which consists of an outhouse and Shrek's house. The swamp is also a home to different kinds of species including the swamp slug that Shrek uses for his toothpaste. When he finds squatters where he lives and realizes he never actually owned the swamp, he agrees to the rescue of Princess Fiona in return for the deed to the swamp in order to make it his private property and evict everyone else, during the course of the mission it causes him to change his mind.
