Episode Description:

In the season premiere episode, "The Beginning of the End," feeling that their rescue is close at hand, the survivors don't know whether to believe Charlie's final message that the people claiming to liberate them are not who they seem to be.

It would be kind of "neat" if something that happens on the island actually causes the Tsunami...maybe. I'm actually getting uncomfortable thinking about incorporating such a mass tragedy into a TV show. It has the potential to be ... not well received, to say the least.

The man in the chair was wearing white shoes and a suit. Looked very much like Christian Shepherd.
The eye that poped up looked like the one the last time we were in the cabin.

The shack was "gone" then it was back. So does that mean that Jacob and his shack exist in a slightly different dimension, which is why Ben "saw" Jacob and Locke didn't?

Maybe it comes to you in stages, so Locke saw the shack but not Jacob, then he heard Jacob, but left before he could "see" him.

That was an awesome episode - so glad that it's back on! Dom back on for a bit was very nice. He cleans up well. :) Jack was just . . . hmmm, well I'm not a fan of what he did to Locke and then how he treated Hurley in the flash forward. So yeah . . . . really excellent premiere!

I think we still have a long way to go before we find out who is "rescued." I don't think the splitting of the camps will remain for very long, there will be some cross over soon. I looked at my tivo and from the sceen when Locke's group walks off it give a shot of all that stayed with Jack. From what I can make out it looks to be, Kate, Desmond, Sayid, and a bunch of red shits. I can't tell but Sun and Jin maybe in Jack's group too.

In order:

Hurley lied about Ana-Lucia because that was part of the price for being rescued, I think. In Jack's flash forward, he told Kate he was sick and tired of lying. They have to lie about the other crash survivors. Maybe the lie is that they were the only ones who survived the plane crash at all?

It wasn't a crime for Hurley to run away; it was a crime for him to be speeding down the road and leading the police on a high speed chase when they ultimately tried to pull him over for speeding.

I thought it was Mikhail at first, but I guess it was Locke.

I thought the same thing about the premier. I was really unhappy about the whole two-hour lie. Oh, and Eli Stone is actually pretty amusing so far.

AceOfDiamond's Counter Intuitive Thought of the Episode
(Damn it's nice to have LOST back)

I think Hurley telling Jack in the flash-forward that "I should have gone with you" and not Locke is a nice piece of intentional misdirection (it's far too early after all for TPTB to blatantly reveal which side was "right" or "wrong" anyway.)

If you more closely analyze Hurley's behavior in the scene, Hurley seems to change gears during the course of the conversation with Jack. At first, Hurley is friendly with Jack, the two reminiscence, and from that perspective it's clear why Hurley would apologize for having previously chosen Locke's side: he obviously reverses his thinking later while on the island and joins Jack's "team" at a pivotal moment.

HOWEVER, note that Hurley's statement to Jack is made prior to his "breakdown," when Hurley seems to remember dead-Charlie's previous speech and the other survivors he's forsaken, and he begins to plead with Jack to go back to the island. Jack tells Kate later that "he was wrong," so something obviously eventually smacks some sense into Jack on that subject.

It almost seems as if:
Hurley, at first, is so excited to see Jack that he initially tows Jack (and Kate's) position of favoring the cover-up: hence he tells Jack, "Sorry man, you were right, should have sticked with you all along, you got me off the island, the freighter folks rescued us as you promised..."
BUT THEN
Something snaps, Hurley remembers what dead-Charlie told him, and he loses control, starts imploring Jack to go back to the island.

If I'm right, the misdirection here is simply that in Episode One TPTB have us believing that Locke may have actually been wrong and the freighter folks may have in fact been "the good guys" attempting to rescue them.

Of course I'm also notoriously pro-Locke in my biases. So take this with a grain of salt.

Definitely, "it." I got the feeling that in this scene they really wanted to drive home that there may/may not supernatural forces still involved (i.e. Jacob, Smokey, etc.) in the lives of the Oceanic Six. Notice the contrast of Hurley vs Jack.

So... basically.... (deep breath).


1. 6 People make it off the island. Jack, Kate, Hurley and three others.

2. Jack's "Team" and Locke's "Team" don't stay separate forever because Hurley makes it off the island. Some MAJOR stuff will happen for sure.

3. The "Oceanic 6" become heroes but for some reason it seems that they are saying everyone else dies right away in the crash. (The cop asks if he met Ana-Lucia BEFORE the plane took off). They can never speak of who they left on the island.

4. At least Jack and Hurley want to get back to the island. They need to go back desperately. It's like the Nexus in one of those Star Trek movies or something? Maybe "normal" life is unbearable after living on an island with monsters, healing powers, etc.

5. The people on the boat want to find the island. They must know of its powers as well?

6. Charlie. Dead? Dream? Hurley's Nuts? Wow. No idea there, that one is going to be tough to imagine. BUT, I have always said I have this feeling that "Dave" will end up being one of the key episodes in the Lost Mythology before it's all said and done. Hmmm...

7. Jacob's Cabin? Christian? What is THAT all about???

Also, given the fact that Desmond was actually the only one who really SAW Charlie's handwritten message regarding the freighter not being Penny's boat, how do TPTB explain the logic of Desmond -- Desmond of all people -- sticking with Jack over Locke? That was my biggest problem with this episode. If anything Desmond was the one person who should have joined Locke first. Sayid remaining skeptical made sense; Jin and Sun wanting off the island so badly regardless made sense; Rose not trusting Locke made sense; Sawyer caring more about survival than anything else made sense; Ben choosing Locke's side certainly made sense; Claire simply choosing the side that best respected Charlie's wishes made sense; Juliet sticking with Jack made sense.

Desmond's desicion made no sense at all.

I thought the ep was great. I thought it was interesting how the island or smokey's powers reach the US. We have seen the island copy people on the island, but now we see Charlie or I believe (Smokey/Island) at the psych warde talking to Hurley.

Hmm. I wonder if Desmond's desicion to stick with Jack is more complex than we might otherwise believe. Maybe he still does believe Charlie's warning, but he desperately wants to convince Jack/Kate/the skeptics to join the barracks crew -- so much so that he'd stay behind for now? I dunno. There's definitely a significant gap in logic there, though. Des was the one who strongly believed Charlie's message regarding the freighter. Why stick with Jack, then, and "get rescued?"

Here is a 'hunch' on what Hurley meant. Btw, I'm definitely a Locke kind of guy. I think that at some point in the season, the people from the boat want EVERYONE off the island and they are not satisfied with simply Jack's group.

And that by going with Locke, Hurley makes everyone else's lives difficult while they search for them.

Finally. That was spectacular. More questions raised... how do they get off the island? I don't think it's via Naomi's boat. I think it's some other way.

Why are they (Jack, Hurley, Kate) lying about what happened after the "rescue"? (Jack says "I'm tired of lying" in last year's finale, and that theme repeats again in this episode) Who are they protecting and why?

Locke and Ben are clearly wrong. They claim that everyone who didn't seek cover and run would die. Jack lives, Kate lives... So Locke claiming "come with me if you want to live" isn't true. However, it's unclear what the consequences of their choices will be. Is staying with Jack and waiting for rescue a mistake in any way? Perhaps, but not one that will guarantee that you die as Locke and Ben made it seem.

I also don't think Hurley "switched sides" eventually and went with Jack. Like I said, I don't think that the Oceanic Six are rescued by the ship that's supposedly off shore. I think there's some other rescue that comes later.

Hurley's discussion with Jack at the end of the episode apologizing for going with Locke was regret, which could be becuase something unfortunate befalls Locke's "group."

I also think that Jack, even though he's angry with Hurley ("We're never going back"), knows deep down inside that Hurley is right. He's just not willing to admit it yet.

He wins the connect four and Jack isn't surprised he makes every shot on the basketball court. I even think he made a comment like "You're still lucky, you never miss." But I have to rewind and check it out.
