Who knows Smokie?

Who do you think on the island knows what Smokie actually is? Were Ben and Juliet lying when they said they didn't know? Does Richard know what it is? Charlotte? Miles? Marvin Candle? Danielle? Walt?

I think Ben & Richard know what it is. They've been there too long to not know

Ben may or may not know. I think Richard probably knows, he's been there for so long.

I think Smokey, aka the Cerberus System, was either created or harnessed by the DHARMA Initiative, so I think members of the Initiative, if there are any still alive, know what Smokey is.

Danielle hasn't been there as long and she said it was a security system. She's also all to familiar with Ben so she may have spend time with the Others.
I think most of that group knows but aren't telling, if it a security system they may have reason to protect what it's protecting.
They're not about to roll over and give up information to a bunch of stranded outsiders.

I think we've seen enough to conclude that Smokie isn't connected to the Dharma initiative. Locke spent days trying to force the hatch to the Swan, and they ended up blowing the hatch with dynamite and no Smokey Security system in sight the entire time. The same with every hatch we've seen the the castaways approach -- the Pearl, the Arrow, the Flame, the Hydra and now the Tempest.

We've also seen the sonic fence used to keep Smokey out of Othersville. If it is a security system for anything, it obviously isn't a security system for the Dharma Facilities.

In Season One it was pretty clearly connected to the Dark Territories -- an area of the the island that TPTB have pointedly avoided mention of ever since. I suspect we'll eventually have a return to the Dark Territores and then we'll find out just what it is protecting, and that will go a long way towards resolving the central mystery of Lost.
