John Locke is the reason they are all still alive.

CHARLIE: If there's one person on this island I would put my absolute faith in to save us all, it would be John Locke.
SAYID: I sense you might be our best hope of surviving here.
I think this is a good idea for a thread. Let's try to list all the people whose lives Locke has saved, either through direct or indirect actions.

Obviously, to a degree, he saved all the 815s by providing a source of food during their first few weeks on the island. But how about specifics? I'll start the list, and add people as we think of them:

People Saved by John Locke:

Jack: Pulled him to safety when he was dangling from a cliff.
Charlie: Helped him break Heroin (Charlie says, "he saved my life.")
Walt: Found him when Walt was cornered by a Polar Bear.
Desmond: Banged on the hatch and stopped him from killing himself.
Eko: Saved him from a Polar Bear.

Locke to Charlie, toward the beginning of "Further Instructions:"

LOCKE: You don't want to go with me, Charlie. Bad things happen to people who hang around with me.

I wonder if this will prove to be prophetic to his merry band of hangers-on in Lockeland.

Locke gave Anthony Cooper his kidney.

Draino, you should start a thread similar to this about how many people Kate has tongued. Wish I could say I was one of them.

Locke gave Anthony Cooper his kidney.

And then conned Sawyer into murdering him !
OK not exactly, but he manouvered Sawyer into a situation where blind rage took over.

But Sawyer still trusted him more than Jack. Says a lot really.

I saw that as him helping Sawyer exorcise his demons much like he helped Charlie kick the heroin. Yeah, he used him a little, I'll admit, but it was a way of killing two birds with one stone, so to speak. :)

Which brings us back to Boone, and Locke trying to persuade him to be a bit more assertive, get out of his sister's clutches and be his own man. It wasn't entirely Locke's fault that Boone was sitting in an airplane when it fell off a cliff.

People seem to be drawn to Locke, even if his actions towards them are sometimes slightly suspect. Boone actually came back to him in a dream or whatever - he obviously didn't hold any grudge. He came back to help Locke.

Same with Sawyer. Its hard to tell whether he has found peace yet. But he doesn't hold any grudge against him. Unless he's plotting Locke's downfall. Hope not - I like the idea of those two together - sorting Jack out !

I have an example of saving emotionally, if not physically:

Locke reached out to Walt and tried to relate to him, something Michael was incapable of doing. He spoke to Walt, and more importantly, he listened to him. He even found his dog and let his father take credit for it.

Help me, Obi-Wan Kenobi; you're my only hope.

Ben and Kate will pool together, and when they do they become Bate. I was the designated driver last night. Chin up.

He's done that to a few people Locke 'n' Load. I think he has a genuine desire to help people - Shannon and Boone, Sawyer, Charlie, Claire, Eko, to name a few.

And he genuinely feels that everyone should stay on the island - looking at the FFs he appears to be right ! The ones that make it back don't seem to be too happy.

On the other hand he could be a raving lunatic, but what would be the point of that ?
