What's with the English?

Before Jin could barely speak English and a month or so later he understands most of what everyone is saying. He learned pretty fast, seeing how it's supposed to be one of the hardest languages to learn.

But he did learn pretty quickly, yes.

Single words and commonly used phrases aren't hard to learn. It's all the crap in between that is. Being around a language you don't speak is the best way to learn it. Jin is getting a heavy dose of English, it's only natural that he should be picking up the language. And I'm sure Sun is helping him along behind the scenes.

Understanding and speaking a foreign language are totally different things. I visited Germany a number of years ago, and though I speak only a few phrases, within days I was able to get the basics of simple conversation. I had to reply in english, but that was no problem for them. :)

yes, English is one of the hardest languages to learn. probably because most languages have RULES and those rules often have few or no exceptions. English is a nightmare with its lack of consistency.

that said, immersion is the easiest way to learn a language. Jin has expressed his frustrations at not being able to communicate, he has had help from a few people. this seems pretty believable - Jin's a smart guy.
