Burly Hurley of 'Lost' Gets Cryptic
LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) The plucky survivors of ABC's "Lost" could serve as a casebook for how most people would respond to being stranded on a deserted (and mysterious) island. Some folks would be as handy and altruistic Matthew Fox's Jack or as malevolently resourceful as Josh Holloway's Sawyer. Few of us would show the eerie mastery of Terry O'Quinn's Locke, but the reluctant brattiness of Maggie Grace's Shannon would probably be in abundance. For most viewers, though, emulating Jorge Garcia's Hurley would be the best of all possible worlds.
Like the subject of Rudyard Kipling's "If," Hurley has kept his head when all about him are losing theirs. Like that poem's ideal hero, he doesn't necessarily look too good nor talk too wise, but on the fractious island, he's a friend to all and an enemy to none, a gentle giant perfectly willing to do hard labor, deskwork or even invent a liberating game of island golf. It's no wonder that though Fox and Holloway and Evangline Lilly may get the press, Garcia has broken out as one of the show's most popular stars.
"I feel like suddenly I get a bit better customer service, where people are more anxious to help me," Garcia says of his public reception. "Usually when people spot me, they're really happy to see me."
While the other characters on "Lost" constantly appear grimy and miserable, stressed out and on the verge of giving up, Hurley always just seems happy to be alive. He's quick with a joke, the only castway who could possibly be described as happy-go-lucky. Garcia seems to be the same way. The 25-year-old actor arrived at auditions for "Lost" before the character of Hurley even existed and found himself reading pages for Sawyer. Even once producers assured him that his character would exist and that there copies of the pilot script were available, the actor wasn't in any kind of rush to see how many lines he got or whether he'd get to have any big emotional moments. Most familiar from comedic work on "Becker" and "Curb Your Enthusiasm," Garcia had all the information he needed.
"I had faith in J.J. Abrams and shooting in Hawaii and that was pretty much all I needed to hear," he laughs.
For the first half of the shooting schedule, production has just been wish fulfillment for the Nebraska-born actor.
"I love what I've gotten to do so far," he says. "The whole thing where I ran away from the plane and it exploded behind me and we dove out in the sand, very action star-ish, I thought that was awesome. That's not something I really expected that I would get to do in my career."
Garcia notes, "Really all I need is a sword fight and I'll be totally satisfied."
Viewers, however, are far from satisfied with the mere snippets of knowledge they've received about the life of Hugo Reyes. While certain characters, including Fox's Jack, have already had multiple episodes dedicated to their backstories, Hurley has gone entirely unexplained, barring some cryptic hints. That won't change until the season's 18th hour, an episode which hasn't even been shot yet. Garcia, in fact, hasn't even seen a script, though the producers have let him in on the character's "big secret." Whatever that secret may be, Garcia isn't telling.
"Because there were hints laid out, I kinda had an idea that it was coming from here," he hedges, revealing nothing of his backstory. "And then when I really stepped back and looked at it in the context of who Hurley has been up to this point, with the group, and that coming out in his revelation. Yeah, I thought it was pretty cool."
On the Internet, wags have been speculating for weeks over a perplexing line of dialogue where Hurley refers to his normal life by saying, "I'm known as something of a warrior myself," a statement that has prompted buzz that Hurley could be everything from an extremely large undercover spy to an extremely dedicated Dungeons and Dragons player.
"There are certain things where you never realize what exactly the audience is going to jump on and really wonder about and catch," Garcia says of his "warrior" comment. "I didn't give that one too much attention and then I realized the attention it got on the Internet. So it made me wonder, 'Yeah, actually I wonder what that is.'"
He adds that in the script, the character smiles after making the statement, but the camera never cut back to his face.
More than just an actor on "Lost," Garcia is a fan, prone to making his own wild guesses about different parts of the complicated plot. For instance, this week he's convinced that the unseen and murderous creature in the jungle is actually something mechanical, but he still doesn't know for sure. He's also wary about some of the more convoluted and mystical theories posited in cyberspace.
"I'm just hoping that we're not in Purgatory, the 'We're All Dead' one," he says. "It writes off a lot too easily. I'd like us to still be on Earth, just because as it continues to unravel and we discover where we are, I want a semblance that you have to work a bit to figure it out."
As much of a conspiracy buff as he may be, Garcia isn't stressing out about solving the riddles of "Lost." Like his character, he's just content where he is, taking his off-days to swim at a favorite secluded Hawaiian beach.
"I float in the water and reflect on how great my life is right now," Garcia sighs.
"Lost" returns to ABC with new episodes starting Wednesday, Jan. 5 at 8 p.m. ET.

Hey Hurley fans. I live in Southern California and this Wednesday's Orange County Register had a huge article on my man, Jorge garcia. They even gave a shout-out to this website!!! I'll try to look for the article on the internet, but i will quote my favorite parts:
His mom says "As a child, he loved to sing. he would pretend to be playing the guitar with a cutting board." Aww how sweet! :)
Also the article says "At night he did stand-up comedy" Figures.

What happened with his interview on Jimmy Kimmel last night? I overlooked his name in the talk show list yesterday, so I missed it. And I missed Evangeline Lilly on Ellen today. Not a good day. Nope. And I'll probably miss more Lost actors on other talk shows tonight and tomorrow.

'Lost' has found actor Jorge Garcia
Garcia has emerged as a fan favorite, an accessible, everyman kind of character.
By Sarah Kuhn / Back Stage West
Jorge Garcia is one of a kind. With his generously sized frame, massive shag of hair -- director Tenney Fairchild affectionately refers to it as "souffle-head" -- and laid-back California-dude demeanor, the actor has a distinctive presence that casting directors and couch potatoes alike can't help but take notice of. "There's no one quite like him," says "Lost" casting director April Webster. "He's a one-er, as they say."
Garcia's unique persona helped him land a role on "Lost," ABC's runaway hit about a diverse group of plane crash survivors marooned on a mysterious island. As easygoing Hugo "Hurley" Reyes, Garcia has emerged as a major fan favorite, an accessible, everyman kind of character that seems to be universally loved. "Lost" co-creator/executive producer Damon Lindelof realized the impact of Garcia's performance when a flight attendant approached him on the way to Hawaii, where the show is filmed. "It was right after the show had premiered," he says. "Up until that point, people were, like, 'Oh, I like that doctor dude; I like the hot chick; I like the drug guy'; but nobody really knew their names yet. But she walked up and goes, 'My husband and I just love Hurley so much.' I think, at that point, he's only referred to by name one or two times over the course of the episode. I'll watch an entire season of television and not know a character's name. I'll be, like, 'Oh, the blonde dude on 'ER.' "
The character of Hurley didn't exist prior to Garcia's audition -- at least not in the form that ended up onscreen. "(The creators) had this part of Hurley, but (they) hadn't written anything for Hurley yet, because we didn't know Hurley was going to be a series regular. He was going to be this redneck, 50-year-old hunter guy," says Webster. "And then when they saw Jorge, they just decided to make the character him. What's so great about these producers is, they have a vision to create roles around the actors if they're good actors and interesting actors."
Lindelof says he, Webster, and fellow co-creator/exec producer J.J. Abrams initially spotted Garcia playing a drug dealer in an episode of HBO's "Curb Your Enthusiasm."
Adds Webster, "What I loved about (the part on 'Curb') was that he didn't act it. He was just so cool ... The character wasn't a stereotyped character: the sleazy little guy. He's a big guy, he's very present, and he was just so underplayed. It had that reality to it."
In person, Garcia is just as engaging as his onscreen persona. Though he has the same laid-back quality as Hurley, the actor is obviously passionate about his craft and the hard work he's put in to get to this point. He has an infectious grin that seems to take up his whole face, and he breaks into it often, especially when recalling certain memories: for example, that fateful day he auditioned for the role on "Curb," which, coincidentally, was the same day he was set to shoot a pilot he'd recently booked. "There's nothing like auditioning for something on the day you're going to work," he says. "That's like auditioning on the day you get a paycheck; you audition different. The whole trick is to learn how to walk in like that even when you've been living on ramen and microwave burritos for a week."
Garcia, who was born in Nebraska and raised in San Juan Capistrano, Calif., remembers getting the performing bug as a young child: The first thing that made a big impression on him was "Fiddler on the Roof." "I would sing 'If I Were a Rich Man,' " he says. "It was very, 'Sing for Grandma, sing for Grandma,' but I really liked it." Garcia acted in high school and while in college performed in a play and dabbled in standup comedy. "I was really starting to look at maybe doing film school or something like that. I wasn't sure at that point," he says. "But the most important thing after I graduated was to get a job, so I didn't have to move back home."
August 2003 is the month Garcia landed a day on a sitcom, a lead in a feature film, and a part on long-running series "Becker" that turned into a series-regular gig.
"I would do 'Becker' in the day, go do night shoots for the movie, and on the weekends I was doing this play at the Skylight (Henry Jaglom's 'A Safe Place') -- I was in one scene," he remembers. "I'd do my scene, and then I'd set up a little makeshift bed and sleep, and then one of the other actors would wake me up before curtain call."

The March 27-April 2 issue of "TV Guide" gives a cheer to Jorge Garcia in its "Cheers & Jeers" section "for carrying an entire episode of Lost...Garcia proved he can play more than just the lovable sidekick. As lottery winner Hurley suffered a bad luck streak, Garcia hit the acting jackpot." :D

GO JORGE!!!
He is tentatively scheduled to be on Leno May 2.
I saw him on Leno! He was hilarious! I posted a topic but it got locked, so here's basically what I said.
I saw him on Leno tonight! He was hilarious! He said something I thought should be in Jorge's quotes. He was either talking about his cast members or about a stand up act.
"I have a lot of friends now that kiss me casually on the mouth. Let me rephrase that. I have a lot of WOMAN friends that kiss me casually on the mouth. Any men that do that aren't my friends anymore......they're my bitches."
I killed myself laughing and I had to share the moment!

Does anyone have transcripts for Jorge's Kimmel and Leno interviews by chance? I've searched the net and everything all to no avail. Sadly, you don't find as much news about him as you do the other cast members. :(

Just watched Whore-Hay on Conan. I fing LOVE Conan and LOST and Hurley!!! He was brilliant!! Seems like an all around great guy!!
Although his character doesn't seem to be that much of a stretch from his actual personna.
What a great idea!!! He said that the cast members each host a little get-together(party) at the respective houses as per each flashback episode. I know that may have sounded silly, but if it's a "Kate" ep then she hosts the other cast members, etc..... very cool!!! For those who follow the hype threads, .....I have parties every night we have a new LOST (I'm a Chef) so fine dinner's abound with plenty of drinks and favors, etc.... Kinda cool to know that I'm hosting my own LOST party while they're doing the same thing.
Mabey next week I'll do a Trifle, with a sausage!!!!(if you saw Conan.....)
He played a drug dealer selling some pot to Larry David.
He was great :D

Jorge García is the fat guy, Hurley, in the series
The Chilean that succeeds in Lost
He grew up in small American cities, sung at the church's choir and sold records. Today, he has a dream cabin in Hawaii and has become an idol thanks to his character in the TV phenomenon.
Fernando Marambio
When Jorge García attended the casting for a new series for American channel ABC, named "Lost", he started trying out for the bad-humoured character Sawyer. And even though he didn't get that role, the stocky actor, whose father is Chilean, made such an impression on the producers that they created a character specially for him: the shy and good natured Hugo Reyes, best known as Hurley.
"Everyone was so impressed with him that they ended giving him a role that didn't exist, but that suits him due to his sense of humour", explains Dora Mesa, the actor's mother, a Cuban teacher, that tries to portray her sibling in spanglish. "Just today I spoke on the phone with him because he wanted to salute his grandpa, my dad, because of his 86th birthday".
"He is a young man that never changed, in spite of his fame", adds Gia Overton, a Mexican descendant, friend of the actor for over 25 years, since they both sung at the choir of a Luteran church in the small town of San Juan Capistrano, in California.
For Clodine, Jorge's younger sister, he retains all the simplicity of the world. "He always remembers Chile, of the summers we spent there in Concepción, where my dad was born, or Santiago, where our aunt and uncle live. He never lost the pride for his roots and he thinks of himself as a Chilean," she states. All that in spite that the series is watched by over 20 million spectators weekly in U.S.A. and the last episode aired by Channel 13 on Sunday had almost a million followers biting their nails off watching the show about 48 plane crash survivors on a mysterious island.
Jorge was born in Omaha, Nebraska, on the 28th of April of 1973. His father, Chilean doctor Humberto García, had become a resident in the U.S.A. in the 60s to perfect his studies, but ended up staying there. Presently, he's retired and suffers from Parkinson disease. "He passed on to us the attachment to Chile. We celebrated the 18th of September (Chile's national day) because we considered ourselves part of that country. We listened to cuecas, read Chilean books and danced. Jorged loved the Chilean food, the empanadas, the barbecues and specially the pastel de choclo (corn pie).", tells Clodine. "My dad cheered for Deportes Concepción (a football team... well, soccer for you yanks :P) and I'm pretty sure that my brother, who likes football, cheered for them too, but I don't think he had the team's shirt and stuff. When the Chileans won the olympic gold (Massú and González) we were all happy", adds.
Up to a decade ago, Jorge used to come to Chile to visit his grandma, who is over 90 years old. He also strolled around Concepción and Viña del Mar. In an interview to "El Mercurio", Jorge remembered having spent the most hot (temperature wise) Christmas ever over here.
After a few years in Nebraska, the family decided to move to San Juan Capistrano, a town in California of 25 thousand pop. at the time. "It was because of the weather", tells Mrs. Dora. They lived in an mid-upper neighborhood. There's where the boy started to quickly develop as an actor.
He was a good student at San Clement High School, and then Jorge attended the University of Los Angeles, where he studied acting. In the meanwhile, he worked as a salesman in a record store called Borders. He became a music fan and started collecting albums, including those of one of his favorite bands: Green Day.
He was already showing himself as a born comediant, so an agent stepped up and got roles for him in "Spin City", "Curb your enthusiasm" and "Becker", three series that have been broadcast in Chile on cable. "When we watched his TV debut, we couldn't believe it was our Jorge", says Gia.
A king's life
"Jorge spent ten years trying to be an actor, doing other jobs and series, but he had yet to be at the right place at the right time," says Clodine. In the end, the opportunity came up when he least expected it: at the time he had to sing at his sister's wedding, he was called over to Hawaii to shoot the first scenes for "Lost". "He didn't make it to the party, but we were still all happy", comments Dora.
Now that the show has a strong success and with his star status, Jorge has a cabin with a spectacular sea view on the Oahu island, and lives there with his girlfreind, Malia. "All of the other people from the show have rented some place over there. As each episode is about one of the characters, that actor is the one that invites over the rest of the cast for dinner to watch the show," tells Gia. He also hangs out with Matthew Fox (Jack, the doctor) and Dominic Monaghan (Charlie, the rockstar) to go swimming, shopping or play poker.

Okay, I hope you all enjoyed to hear from these "exotic" reports about Jorge.
Cheers...

Like everybody else, we're massive Lost dorks. Mind you, we haven't combed the double-secret web sites for clues, read the novel tie-ins, or, under the nom de plume ""IslandBoy815,"" posted a theory that the since-destroyed hatch was envisioned as an elaborate, metaphorical vagina. Is this old news?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0xpekrElVfk&NR
OK, this isn't really the "media" so to speak but recently (just prior to the finale) Jorge sat down with Ben and Ralph of the Dharmalars podcast to discuss everything from LOST to the Food Network. I think it's awesome that Jorge has kind of taken it upon himself to be an ambassador to the fans. He calls and/or talks to every fan-based LOST podcast I listen to. Anyway, here's a link to listen online (http://media.switchpod.com/users/dharmalars/ftp/Predictions.m4a) and this link takes you to the MYOKOM w/SAS blogspot page where it's posted. (http://scottandsteve.blogspot.com/2007/05/dharmalars-finale-predictions-2007.html)
ETA - I forgot to mention, on iTunes the Dharmalars have an "Explicit" tag on their podcast. I wouldn't recommend listening around children. It's not vulgar, but it does have some (not a lot) adult language.

If you're going through summertime Lost withdrawal, this clip will probably quench your cravings, though maybe not in a good way. It's a pre-fame Jorge Garcia in a commercial for Hardee's, perhaps presaging Hurley's ill-fated career in the fast-food industry. (Hat tip to PopWatch reader Jeff Watzman for sending this our way.) Like I said, I'm not sure if this will whet your appetite or kill it... although it is almost lunchtime... and you know what would go good on that roast beef sandwich? Some creamy Dharma salad dressing...
