I don't think anyone has discussed what Hurley's name could mean: Hugo "Hurley" Reyes
I've read discussions of other people's names, but I think Hurley's name would be intriguing, entertaining.

HUGO:The Hawai'i Undersea Geo-Observatory www.soest.hawaii.edu/HUGO/hugo.html (http://www.soest.hawaii.edu/HUGO/hugo.html)

HUGO is a submarine observatory situated on the summit of Loihi seamount, an active undersea volcano. Data from HUGO are relayed to the Big Island of Hawai'i for real-time monitoring of the volcano's behavior. Click here to learn more about this exciting project.

Victor Hugo - Victor Hugo wrote poetry, fiction, and essays.
He was an artist, a playwright, and a journalist.
A revolutionary in both the literary and the political
A 19th Century French literary legend.
Victor in Drama1, Victor in Romance,
Cloud-weaver of phantasmal hopes and fears,
French of the French, and Lord of human tears;
Child-lover; Bard whose fame-lit laurels glance
Darkening the wreaths of all that would advance,
Beyond our strait, their claim to be thy peers;
Weird Titan by thy winter weight of years
As yet unbroken, Stormy voice of France!
Who dost not love our England--so they say;
I know not--England, France, all man to be
Will make one people ere man's race be run:
And I, desiring that diviner day,
Yield thee full thanks for thy full courtesy
To younger England in the boy my son.

Hugo Reyes is an anagram for "Heroes Guy"

Oh, you guys know Hurley is a hottie. Admit it. He HAS been the best comic relief on the show. Typical. Everyone laugh at the fat guy. I hope he turns out to be a serial killer or something.

Hey, I think Hurley might in fact turn out to be the seriel killer - does anyone know for a fact that he was on the plane? I think that since his story is last this season, he will be the one to die, plus he will be a big part of why they are on the island and what the secrets of the island are.

Is there any offshore gambling site betting on who dies - I'm going to go with Hurley because he is the last story of the season.

I, on the other hand, think he will be the one to kill the person who will die.

"Hugo" could be a reference to Hugo Gernsback, Early SciFi writer who is memorialized with the annual awards in the genre given at the World SciFi Convention.

Or it could be a reference to the hurricane which slammed into the Carolinas a few years ago.

Trying to put together "Hurley" hints.

1. Didn't he say he didn't like to talk about it?
2. He's been hospitalized. *likely, anyway*
3. His mom told him he was gaining weight again.

Maybe he's had problems with bulimia?

Yeah, it was funny that Hurley used to be a Mental patient at the hospital. He probably did have bulemia hence the name Hurley - but dude he is like huge, how can he be that large.

Hugo is a big guy and a bit hary. Some might call him Burly.

Burly adj. 1) big and stong 2) hearty in manner.

Folks play around with words enough..tease a fat kid about his name and it's easy to get

Hurly-Burly n. turmoil, uproar.

I'd say Hugo is having some trumoil at the moment.

This may have something to do with the geo-thermal island.

I always assumed "Hurley" was a nickname from his partying days? You know... drinking and hurling...

Hugo is the (or Spanish) form of Hugh. Hugh comes from the Germanic hug (hoog), meaning "heart, mind, or spirit". (from Behind the Name (http://behindthename.com/php/search.php?nmd=n&terms=hugo))

Reyes is Spanish for "kings".

And as he hints, "Hurley" seems to come from his squeamishness.

Well, if he did have bulemia--which I doubt--it would actually explain his weight. When you repeatedly throw up food instead of digesting it, your metabolism drops to nil because your body reacts as though you're starving (and you essentially are)--which is why people recovering from bulemia often experience significant weight gain when they start eating just normally. It takes a long time to get your body right again. That's part of what makes it so dangerous.

I'd find it more believable if Hugo had been one of these guys that so-called friends would dare to eat outrageous substances or amounts of food, and he'd oblige because he believed it would help his popularity. Instead, they'd make fun of him at the end when he hurled everything up.

Hugo Reyes in numerology (without Hurley as a middle name) makes him a:

8+3+7+6 +9+5+7+5+1= 11+13+14+12+1 (WEIRD!) =24+27=41,and 4+1 make Hurley a five! 5is adventurous, mercurial, and sensual.
I don't know what thats proves though....maybe Libby is in for a treat? :D
BTW, 11 and 22 are master numbers in numerology.....
