Hey does Hurley remind anyone else of comic book guy from the Simpsons? He seems like the kind of person who would still be living in his parents' basement with mummy still doing his laundry. When he says “dude that was a Jedi moment” it sounds just like something someone with no life would say. What do you guys think?

I think the original poster should rephrase the question so as not to offend 90% of the internet community all being geeks and most thinking exactly the same way Hurley did.

When I posted it was a tongue-in-cheek kind of a post. I'm one of those no life nerds I was talking about. Sorry if I offended anyone, it wasn't meant that way. (I'll meet you at the apology thread if I need to :)

I think the comic was Hurley's. He gives me a comic book collector, video game player vibe,(I say this being one of each) and the comic is in Spanish, and he is latino. Hugo Reyes, latino name...

Hey golfergirl, you called it a long time ago. In a recent interview Jorge said that Hurley doesn't have a job and he still lives with his mom. He didn't mention whether or not it was in her basement, though. Can't wait for Hurley's backstory!

Thanks Celtic! I contribute my great idea to the fact that I live in my parents basement, my mom does my laundry, I spend hours on my computer, and I don't have a life.

Here is some stuff I found out about Hurley's name:

HUGO:The Hawai'i Undersea Geo-Observatory www.soest.hawaii.edu/HUGO/hugo.html

HUGO is a submarine observatory situated on the summit of Loihi seamount, an active undersea volcano. Data from HUGO are relayed to the Big Island of Hawai'i for real-time monitoring of the volcano's behavior. Click here to learn more about this exciting project.

Victor Hugo - Victor Hugo wrote poetry, fiction, and essays.
He was an artist, a playwright, and a journalist.
A revolutionary in both the literary and the political
A 19th Century French literary legend.

Novelist, poet, and dramatist, the most important of French Romantic writers. In his preface to his historical play CROMWELL (1827) Hugo wrote that romanticism is the liberalism of literature. Hugo developed his own version of the historical novel, combining concrete, historical details with vivid, melodramatic, even feverish imagination. Among his best-known works are The Hunchback of Notre Dame and Les Misérables.

NOTRE-DAME DE PARIS, which became an instant success. Since its appearance in 1831 the story has became part of the popular culture. The novel, set in 15th century Paris, tells a moving story of a gypsy girl Esmeralda and the deformed, deaf bell-ringer, Quasimodo, who loves her. Esmeralda aroses passion in Claude Frollo, an evil priest, who discovers that she favors Captain Phoebus. Frollo stabs the captain and Esmeralda is accused of the crime. Quasimodo attempts to shelter Esmeralda in the cathedral. Frollo finds her and when Frollo is rejected by Esmeralda, he leaves her to the executioners. In his despair Quasimodo catches the priest, throws him from the cathedral tower, and disappears. Later two skeletons are found in Esmeralda's tomb - that of a hunchback embracing that of a woman

- 2 skeletons were found in the tomb!!! - were the 2 skeletons in lost a pair of lovers?

HURL Current Research

www.soest.hawaii.edu/HURL...loihi.html

Loihi is an active submarine volcano that may become the next Hawaiian Island. In July 1996, Loihi became the site of a major seismic event that occurred over a two week period. This was recorded on the Hawaii Volcano Observatory's seismometer grid. The effects of oceanic volcanic eruptions and collapses may be manifested in increased carbon dioxide emissions in the atmosphere, generation of tsunamis by landslides, and destruction of biota living there. A quick response cruise funded by the National Science Foundation and led by Frederick Duennebier (P.I.) and Francis Sansone (co-P.I.) responded to this event and laid the foundation for the cruises that followed.

Point Reyes National Seashore contains unique elements of biological and historical interest in a spectacularly scenic panorama of thunderous ocean breakers, open grasslands, bushy hillsides and forested ridges. Native land mammals number about 37 species and marine mammals augment this total by another dozen species. The biological diversity stems from a favorable location in the middle of California and the natural occurrence of many distinct habitats. Nearly 20% of the State's flowering plant species are represented on the peninsula and over 45% of the bird species in North America have been sighted. The Point Reyes National Seashore was established by President John F. Kennedy on September 13, 1962.

The google search for Hugo also came up with: Human Genome Project (HGP) - Not sure why -www.ornl.gov/sci/techreso...home.shtml

Could Hurley have been invovled in some sort of Science experiment gone Horribly wrong - does he know what is inthe Hatch? Is this Island a science experiement that Hurley put together? Does Hurley see dead human lab rats

I guess the stereotype fits.

Now does anyone else think Hurley is special like Michael? Maybe Hurley is subconsciously using his powers in a negative way and that's why he has all that bad luck? Maybe he "created " the polar bears?

I don't think Hurley was born with any special powers. AFter seeing the lottery episode, i definately think Hurley has the bad luck that was afflicted by the numbers. The numbers ORIGINATED on the Hatch.

Thus there is some cosmic "calling" that is associated with the numbers - they are definately cursed. But the question is WHY are they cursed.

After seeing the shoot going down down down - My guess is that the Hatch is a gateway to HELL and the numbers are cursed by the devil. Also, maybe everyone on the island has unknowly been exposed to the numbers and are cursed along with Hurley - so they are all in Purgatory! A hah!

Holy crap. A purgatory theory. Quelle nouveau.

I can't accept the notion that bad luck is all it took to get Hurley to that island. Yes, the numbers were on the hatch before Hurley was on the island, but these things are connected to one another.

It's not a coincidence that the numbers on the hatch are the same ones that Hurley used to win the lottery.

Hurley LEARNED the numbers from a guy who heard them on a radio, a broadcast which originated from the island where the hatch was located.

If there's any coincidence, it's that the plane crashed on THAT particular island. But I don't think that it's a coincidence.

Only mildly - referring to the OP. Comic Book Guy has a snobby attitude to cover up for his basic insecurities. He takes comic books waaayy too seriously. He's lost in his fantasy - I love his death scene in one of the Halloween episodes when he sees a missile coming right to him - "Oh, I've wasted my life!"

Hurly is basically a likable guy unlike the Comic Book Guy. He has low self-esteem but he doesn't lash out at people. Most of his quotes seem self-effacing liek the warrior quote. I think he was definately being sarcastic which however doesn't translate well to 10 year olds.

Hurley is kind of like the glue for the whole group. In small ways he's tried to keep the peace and make people happy. I think people take him for granted though
