I looked around to see if this has been mentioned before, but I found nothing. This may belong in general discussion, but I thought it would be safer to place it here.
Maybe this is just stating the obvious but I don’t think Ethan was planning on abducting Claire at all, I think he was going to wait until she actually had the baby and then steal the baby.
When Ethan took Claire it was after Charlie had run up to him in the woods telling him to go get Jack because Claire was in labor. Ethan had been working on some little chore (it looked like he was collecting wood) and looked surprised at the information. He even starts to head towards the cave. However, as we all know, he turns around and goes back to get Claire and Charlie. He thought Claire was in labor and realized he didn’t even have to wait for her to have the baby, because the perfect opportunity had just presented itself.
He couldn’t of planned to take Claire was she in labor because he had no way of knowing when that would happen. It could of very likely happened when she was in the caves and around tons of people. Plus, a pregnant woman may be easier to abduct than a normal one, but a baby is even easier.
Claire was just extra baggage that he never wanted to take. He would have to wait for her to have the baby and the longer she’s missing the longer all the other castaways have to find her.
