I've noticed several people referring to it as heroin....but I'm pretty sure it's meth.
After he finds it, he rubs some on his gums, which is very characteristic of meth.

... Dominic himself said it was heroin. His exact words were "uncut Pakistani Heroin." I think this means he has a different kind from the average street drug, which is why he doesn't inject it.

I am pretty sure it's heroin. It might be meth....Though meth is more white than brown. And that stuff in his packet was like a brown colour.

It's heroin.

On one of the many sites I've visited, it also says something about it being heroin.

personally, it looked like wheat bran to me...drug-wise, i think it's heroin.
I'm fairly certain it's heroin... if Dom himself has said it...
And I've done quite a bit of research on heroin (fic-writing purposes) and his withdrawl symptoms were characteristic of drugs from the opium poppy.

please, his withdrawl wasn' tright for ANY drug... even friggen nicoteine or chocolate can do worse than that!
heroin can be taken in very many different ways, not just by injecting. if there is a spot that you can put on your bod that would absurd it into the blood stream, then it can be use in that way. but i say that he had it pretty easy. scent's in the next show he seem to be back to normal, as u may say. no shakes, thirstinesses, feeling or looking almost dead, etc. and usually to get over the effect of heroin and urning for it, take quiet a long time, months even. so i say he is very luck in that area. especially if it was uncut Pakistani heroin, not that powerful stuff there.:hat

FWIW: addiction is a personality disorder. Addicts are "out of control" and try to medicate their feelings either by an actual drug or even a behaviour. Unless you understand the core of your addiction, you just trade it for another one.
Alcoholics even get addicted to AA meetings!
So to be realisic, I'd look for Charlie to "medicate" his feelings of inadquecy by something else -- probably a behavoiur. Til he gets through to himself about why he does these things.
addiction is more of both personal and pshyical. he wasnt just doing some kind of weak drug there, he was doing heroin, really potent stuff as well. now i see why he started using, and i think he figure it out and that is why he burn the rest of it. but the pshyical urning of the drug is just pure hell. what ur body goes threw, trying to get use to not being depent on the stuff. so again i think he got off easy on the whole withdraw thing.

My vote goes to Heroin.

Over on the Internet Movie Database website, under "Trivia" about "Lost" was this statement...
"During Charlie's snorting scenes, Dominic Monaghan is actually snorting brown sugar."

I just discovered this board today. So hállo everyone!
First, I have never watched an episode of 'Lost'. I never watch television, it probably does not airwave where I live. I read about it every week via internet and discuss it in another forum of very small importance.
About what Charie is doing for a drug. As far as I have read, it is heroin he uses, as that what it shows prominatly in his flashbacks. I have been many places and seen unusual things to gather some of my observations....Anyway, I think he is a pill user (as he does not shoot a needle), but pills can be crushed to snort, ingest orally as a powder as well taking a whole pill. In one episode I remember his discovery in the episode 'The Moth', this scene:
Jack and Hurley continue to move bags from the beach to the caves. Charlie offers his help, but only gets in the way. When one of the bags pops open, Charlie spots some pill bottles and considers pocketing one. Jack catches him in the act. Charlie claims he has a "headache", but Jack tells him Diazepam is a little strong for a headache and dismisses him.
Diazepam is Valium. It is a drug used on some patients for anti-seizure, and drug/withdrawal symptoms. There is yet some secret drug connection between these two characters. I think Charlie also has more drugs than let known, or he is desperatly seeking slow withdrawal. Charlie did at first have symptoms of being sweating, nervous and agitated, which is common in minor withdrawal, but it would be much worse by now from heroin without slow withdrawal.
I wonder if Jack helping him?
That is my humble thought and wonder for the day. I have not read last Wednesday show yet.
The brown sugar thing is indeed funny! :)

Luthien,
Welcome! Have you tried 'torrenting' the episodes? If you visit the General Discussions forums, I believe in the "need help?" thread people explain this and other ways of getting LOST in places where it's not broadcasted yet.
Regarding your post: Jack offered to help Charlie with the withdrawal near the end of The Moth so it wouldn't surprise me if the Diazepam ended up being prescribed for Charlie by the island's doctor.
lostaddict, my take was too that Charlie wanted the pills to help him deal with his withdrawal. That could have been what finished cluing Jack to Charlie's addiction.

Dom said himself that he was upset they didnt have enough time to show the whole withdrawl process. He said something about it being a fun acting experience...

I think it was less time than the question of how much can you show on a primetime show without the rating going up. It's a shame we didn't get to see more, and I'm sure Dom would have been great.

they should at least show him randomly getting headaches or something. But then again, Locke can walk again, Michael's leg healed rather quickly after the boar attacked him. Jack's stitches on his back seemed to heal quickly as well as his shoulder. He had the sling on at the very end of one episode & it was never mentioned again. Keeping in mind that each episode is only a day or 2, some even continuing the same day...Brings up "the mysterious healing powers of the island"

I've never seen real heroin before, was the brown sugar convincing? Cause to me, it looked like brown sugar, is that what heroin looks like?

Heroin has two powdery-looking types. It can be white, or brown. Yes, some heroin does look like brown sugar.
